Using Podcasts and More

Project Based when Project Based wasn’t COOL!

My Theory

You can do simple things in your classroom that make it seem hip or

cool without really changing anything you are doing.

You will be amazed at how students

will form an upbeat opinion about your class and the value of the education they are receiving.

Model Responsible 21st Century Communication

Creativity Through Podcasting

• A podcast is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication.

• IDEA: Have your students produce Public Service Announcements (PSA’s)

Students Benefit from Podcasting

By both creating them and by listening/viewing them!

Podcasting Resources

• Audio Podcasting tutorial using Garageband

• Free Podcasts for you from Apple• Podcasting examples from EDUCAUSE

including podcasting tools • A Podcast produced by my students

promoting their school and hosted by ALEX

YODIO

FREE to record

FREE to publish

FREE to share

TECHNOLOGY IS

THE TIPPING POINT

Set Up a facebook Page

Set up a page for your CTSO and Post regular updates to the page such as:

1. Meeting dates

2. Field trips

3. Upcoming speakers

4. Competition information and links

5. Share good news about the chapter

Guidelines for a CTSO facebook

• Create a CTSO facebook page for information only

• Do not allow students to post but encourage them to join

• Educate your CTSO on digital etiquette prior to unveiling your facebook.

Digital Etiquette Resourcesand more - FREE from BrainPop

facebook is blocked at our school!

It is in our system too!

Students admit they get on facebook as soon as they get home.

Extend their school connection by creating a safe site for them to visit at home.

Set up a CTSO club page where only you can post and students must be accepted to join.

Make sure your principal and administrators know about your page and are invited to join too!

Set up a CTSO twitter Account

What is twitter anyway?

• It is a social networking site • It allows you to send short messages to many

users at once

• Set up a Twitter account and ask your CTSO members to join and follow

• With 1 tweet from your cell you can notify CTSO members of a meeting or deadline

The CMS Twitter Page

What to TWEET?

• Meeting reminders• Paperwork due dates• Competitive event updates• Receive tweets from FBLA nationals and share

with students• School fundraising information• Program of Work updates• Ask your principal, advisory committee and

administrators to join and follow!

facebook, twitter and Class Web Pages provide 24/7 Access

Mrs. Knight’s Avatar

Used to welcome

students back in August

2010

Summer ACTE Conference

• I received many great emails after the Avatar’s in Education presentation.

• I have helped several of you with your Voki’s and Blabberize presentations.

• I wanted to share this information again due to all the great feedback and success stories you have shared.

• Your positive feedback inspired me!

What is a Avatar?

An avatar is a computer user's representation of himself/herself or alter ego whether in the form of a three-dimensional model used in computer games

An Example of an Avatar

Jordan Lucas and Briana McNeel Campaign for FBLA President

Why Use Avatars to make Campaign Speeches?

• Ideal for middle school and shy students

• A fun 21st century Web 2.0 tool

• Encourages creativity

• It is an innovative way to make presentations

How Did I Ensure The Quality of Each Voki?

How Did Students Present Their Voki’s?

• Students were given a 10 minute Voki tutorial followed by a handout of guiding questions

• At our first CTSO meeting of the year prior to voting

To Make an Avatar

• All you need is 1 computer and 1 microphone

SUGGESTED USES:• Create a classroom/lab safety avatar• Have students research a topic and use

an avatar to present their research• Shy students will build confidence with

avatar’s
