Why are cities where they are??

• The usual reason was access to water and fertile land

• Other reasons:– Near a railway– Near a major highway– Close to natural resources

• Such as fish, forests, and minerals

Communities Across Canada

• Every major city in Canada moved through the following URBAN HIERARCHY, or ranking according to size:

• Hamlet – village – town – city• Smallest largest

Hamlet

• A hamlet is the smallest kind of settlement, with about eight or ten buildings.

• The services that a hamlet provides are very limited… it might have a gas station.

Village

• A village typically has between 200 and 800 people.

• People travel to villages to buy things that they cannot find in their local hamlet.

Town

• Towns are communities with a population of 1000 to 10 000 people.

• Most towns have a main shopping area and provide everything that the residence need.

City

• A city has a population of 10 000 or more people.

• Most Canadians live in large cities.

• All cities provide more goods and services than do towns, including luxury items.

High-order good

• Something (goods) only available in cities.

• Luxury cars, high end clothing, electronics…

Low-order good

• Something (goods) that can be found anywhere

• Bread, milk, chocolate…

Census Metropolitan Area (CMA)

• Many of Canada’s cities have grown so big that there is no rural area between them and neighbouring communities.

• These areas are called CMA’s and include: all the villages, towns and smaller cities near the major urban centre.

• CMA’s all have more than 100 000 people.
