WHY DO WE HAVE OVER 35 TRILLION CELLS?

What is a cell?

Cell: Smallest unit of living matter that can carry out all processes required for life

Cells have 2 main categories

Prokaryotic Cells

NO nucleus

NO membrane-bound organelles

LOOSE DNA in the cytoplasm

Prokaryotes are single-celled

Eukaryotic Cells

Nucleus

Membrane-bound organelles

DNA found in the nucleus

Eukaryotes can be single or multi-cellular

2 Main types of Eukaryotic Cells

Animal Cells

Found in all animals

Plant Cells

Found in all plants

Organelles

Organelle = little organ

Structures specialized to perform distinct processes within a cell
