Shark Movies Become
Enjoyable
• Since 3000 BC, sharks were seen painted on pottery
• Until the 1900’s, the Western world had forgotten about sharks entirely
• In 1916, a series of shark attacks in New Jersey put sharks back on the radar
HISTORY
• It became a social phenomenon, as sharks were viewed as a problem the government couldn’t take care of and became notorious for being killing machines
• Then in 1975, the movie Jaws came out, starring a massive, brutal killer of a shark that preyed on people
• Jaws started an era of a representation of sharks being known as nothing but a lethal killer
• Sharks were massive, with blood-stained teeth and empty black eyes, exactly the picture the viewers were expecting for a killer
• After Jaws, shark movies became more and more outrageous, with more and more people dying or having an even scarier, mutant shark
• Then in 1987, the Discovery Channel began a week-long event known as Shark Week, which featured killer sharks but also how they weren’t just killing machines, they were sophisticated animals
• To this day, we now have movies that feature sharks that fly, or have two heads, or even swim on mountains under the snow, how much is it going to get out of hand?
