General The Greenroofs by Blackdown NatureMat® extensive green roof system creates a self sustaining plant community that does not require irrigation, except on installation. Comprising a UK grown sedum blanket, Vulkatec Extensive mineral based growing medium and a composite drainage and protection layer the system is suitable for use on a variety of types of waterproofing including asphalt, bitumen, hot melt, liquid applied, single ply and standing seam aluminium and provides a wide range of environmental benefits.
Plant Layer
NatureMat®, developed and grown by Blackdown’s horticulturalists, is a high quality sedum blanket consisting of randomly sown sedum species chosen for their drought tolerance and ability to self-generate in the harsh roof environment, making them very suited to lightweight extensive green roofing. Grown to maturity in Somerset NatureMat® provides 90-95% plant coverage on installation. After application the system forms a dense flower carpet during the summer months in various hues of white, pink, red and yellow and provides an evergreen backbone during winter, in foliar shades of green to red.
Growing Medium Layer Vulkatec Extensive is a specialist mineral based plant growing medium consisting of natural pumice, lava, bark compost, green compost, peat and xylith. Factory blended and stabalised against de-mixing Vulkatec Extensive substrate provides a high total pore volume balanced with good nutritive substance buffering for exceptional plant germination and growth.
Drainage/Protection layer BHC 920 is a factory laminated composite that ensure effective protection or the waterproofing whilst ensuring that water is both retained to help sustain plant life and drained to avoid water logging of the substrate.
For further information on the individual component layers please see the relevant Product Data Sheet. NBS Q37 format specifications and BoQ descriptions are also available from the Blackdown website.

Ease of Installation 1
Applications Suitable for both new and refurbishment roofing applications the Greenroofs by Blackdown Naturemat® extensive green roof system can be installed on roofs of almost any shape, size or pitch, and on a variety of SIG Design & Waterproofing single ply and Liquid applied waterproofing solutions.
The weight of the Naturemat® blankets make them more suitable to sites where there is a high degree of wind uplift to be taken into consideration, and they are often more suitable to pitched roof applications where they eliminate the risk of substrate erosion through wind scour. Pre-establishment of the plant system can also be preferential for coastal applications where the high local concentrations of salt in the atmosphere can affect the establishment of plug plant or hydroseed systems.
The pre-grown nature of the system provides immediate greening, achieving a minimum of 90% green cover on delivery, making the system particularly suited to highly visible projects.
The sedum species in the Naturemat® extensive green roof system prefers bright well drained sites but will tolerate most site conditions, except those that are waterlogged or heavily shaded. Once established the system requires minimal maintenance and no watering.
Naturemat® blankets can also be used to provide ground cover in areas that are difficult to plant or maintain e.g. embankments, roundabouts, tramway beds etc. Greenroofs by Blackdown can also provide custom grown bespoke mixes of Naturemat® to meet a specific local requirement.
