Who are the Board of Regents?
○ The Board of Regents retains full power of organization and governance of the University of California system, managing all 10 campuses, 5 medical centers, off campus research labs, and observatories.
○ The Board of Regents operate through 10 different committees (Compliance and Audit, Compensation, Education Policy, Health Services, Investments, Long Range Planning, Finance, Governance, Oversight of the Department of Energy Laboratories).
○ The Board of Regents meets six times a year, every other month for two-three day meetings typically at UC San Francisco. The committees will meet as needed throughout the year at different times.
Who Comprises the Board? The Board of Regents has 26 voting members.
○ 18 Regents are appointed by the Governor of California, approved by the California Senate Rules Committee, for 12 year terms.
○ One Student Regent appointed after their one year as a designate.○ Seven Ex-Officio members:
● Governor of California ● Lieutenant Governor ● Speaker of the Assembly ● State Superintendent of Public Instruction ● President of the Alumni Association ● Vice President of the Alumni Association ● President of the UC System
In addition to the 26 voting members, there are non-voting members that include:
○ Two faculty members (Chair and Vice-Chair of the Academic Council) ○ Two staff advisors ○ The Student Regent Designate
What does the Student Regent do?○ The Student Regent will help to establish policy in areas
such as student fees, admissions, and financial aid.
○ The Student Regent will sit on committees of their choosing.
○ The Student Regent will also be responsible for training and mentoring the student regent designate.
○ In the past student regents have chosen specific issues to work on and influence changethroughout the UC system.
Student Regent Success ○ Sadia Saifuddin (14-15)
● (undergraduate student from UC Berkeley) established the first system-wide food security model to eradicate hunger and malnourishment on UC campuses, and chaired the first system-wide committee on food insecurity to research, develop, and implement best practices across the UC system. Saifuddin currently serves as an international speaker, trainer, and thought leader in higher education.
○ Jonathan Stein (12-13)● (Graduate Law and Public Policy Student UC Berkeley) Helped lead a system wide voter
registration drive that registered over 50,000 UC students to vote and did GOTV work on behalf of Proposition 30, which raised upper income taxes and ultimately generated state funding for UC.

Overview of the Application Process
○ The Application is submitted electronically over email by Sunday, February 28th, 2016 Email to: ● Clare.Sheridan@ucop.edu

○ The Applicants must submit the application form, an essay as described in the application, and a current resume.
○ The application is available online at the UC Regents website.
Overview of Selection Process○ The selection process takes place from March to July. ○ Applications are screened and interviewed with Regional Nominating Commissions.
● Regional Nominating Commissions consist of the Chairs/Presidents from both the Undergraduate and Graduate Student Governments of each campus.
○ 10 Semifinalist interviewed by the University of California Students Association. ● UCSA consists of External Vice Presidents/Chairs from most UC Campuses
Undergraduate and Graduate Student Governments. ○ Special Regent Committee
● Consists of 6 Regents, including the out-going Student Regent.

Compensation ○ The Student Regent during both years, as the designate and
regent, are compensated: ● All University Fees
■ Undergraduates can work with the financial aid office to keep their grants, scholarships, or loans to keep their monthly income to afford housing, etc.
■ Graduate Students will be found a way to provide monthly income if reliant on TA ship or other work obligation.
● Parking Pass for all UC campuses for two years. ● Travel for official Student Regent business. ● Resources to acquire State and UC documents that might
be not be as accessible by others.
Resources For Your Process○ The Dean of Students office, Career Center, and
Chancellor’s office, will provide preparation assistance: ● Career Center Advising is available to assist with
resume review and interview prep-schedule an appointment with the adviser for your major.
● The Dean of Students office is available for 1:1 application assistance and essay review.
● The Chancellor will meet with applications for Q&A session. ■ Please make these request through Lucy Rojas,

Preparing for the Student Regent Position 1. Get the background on student issues. 2. Understand every side of the each issue. 3. Know your audience and be prepared for
follow-up questions. a. Reach out the Presidents and External Vice
Presidents of the Student Governments. 4. Reach out to previous student regents and
ask for assistance and feedback. 5. Recognize your strengths and weaknesses. 6. Be yourself and enjoy the process.
