Winter Wonderland Numeracy Centres

What’s Inside?

Number Strand

1. Mitten Match - Matching Activity – 1 set

students match quantities on one mitten with the numerals on a matching mitten

2. How Many Marshmallows? - Individual – 6 copies

reinforce ‘subitizing’ numbers to 10

each student grabs a handful of 2- 3 coloured pom poms

the students sorts the pom poms and subitizes the quantity

the students find the total of ‘marshmallows’ in the hot chocolate

3. Making Snowballs to Ten - Individual - 6 copies

using 5 as a benchmark to compare numbers to 10.

players take turns rolling a 1- 10 sided die

the player fills up the number of spaces indicated on the die and tells how many more to make ten

record the numeral to make 10 in the box

4. Catching Snowflakes 1-10 - Partner Game – 6 copies

player #1 needs to roll die (1 – 10 sided), build quantity on a ten frame and cover up the

numeral

players will need their own game boards

first one to cover all the numerals wins

5. Catching Snowflakes 1 -20 - Partner Game – 6 copies

player #1 needs to roll 2 dice (1 – 10 sided), find sum and build quantity on the ten

frames and cover up the numeral

players will need their own game boards

first one to cover all the numerals wins

6. Hot Chocolate Match - Matching Activity – 1 set

matching numerals with quantities modeled on ten frames

matching numerals with quantities with number words

7. Snowman Match - Individual Activity – 1 set

use objects to match the quantities represented by the numerals on the snowmen

8. Snow Village Parking Lot (1 -6) or (1 -12) – Partner Game – 6 copies

students use a set of dominoes to match the quantity of dots to the

numeral shown on the parking lot

9. Winter Missing Numbers - Individual Activity – 1 set

reinforce the order of numbers

student choose a card and uses plastic number to fill in the mystery missing

numbers

10. Falling Flakes - (1 -6) or (1 – 10) - Partner Game – 6 copies

players match the quantity rolled with the numeral on the snowflakes

after all 30 cubes have been used, players organize their cubes into 10s and 1s to

determine who has more and by how many

11. More or Less Snowman - Individual activity – 6 copies

player chooses a card and identify the quantity.

then the player spins the spinner to determine whether to build one more, one less,

two more or two less than the number

player then builds the quantity

12. Feed Me - Individual Activity - 6 copies

reinforce partitioning of numbers into 2 parts.

students use 2 sided counters and sort them into 2 parts

13. Feed the Penguin and Polar Bear (1 - 6) - Partner Game - 6 copies

each player needs a game board

player 1 rolls a (1-6) die

player 1 covers the matching numeral on the game board

player 2 takes a turn

the winner is the first to fill the board

14. Feed the Penguin and Polar Bear (2 - 12) - Partner Game - 6 copies

each player needs a game board

player 1 rolls two (1-6) dice and finds the total sum

player 1 covers the matching numeral on the game board

player 2 takes a turn

the winner is the first to fill the board

Pattern

1. Mitten Patterns - 1 set

pattern strips can be used to encourage students to represent, extend and

create repeating patterns

2. Winter Pattern Blocks - 1 set

use to develop spatial reasoning and patterning

Student covers with the pattern blocks as shown.

Ask students to cover the objects a different way

Measurement

1. Measure the Snowmen - 10 different sized snowmen

students used various materials to measure and compare the snowmen

Falling Flakes

Each student will need 15 stacking cubes in their own colour.

Player 1 rolls a die (1 – 6 sided) and puts a cube on the snowflake with that numeral.

Player 2 has a turn. If there is already a cube in that snowflake, the player stacks their cube

on top of the one that’s there, to make a tower.

At the end of the game (when all the cubes are used up), players scan to see which of their

towers has their colour on top. Those towers are collected and snapped together.

The player with the tallest tower wins!
