What I wish I knew… How to survive your preclinical years!
Why does this lecture exist?
! Lots of uncertainty starting a new degree, especially a 5-‐6 yr one
! Uni is very different from school!
! Lots of pitfalls to avoid & lessons to learn!
There are a lot of things that we wish we had known
In this talk: ! How year 1 & 2 work
! What tools (books or otherwise) you need
! How you should focus on your work
! What you shouldn’t miss out on!
Firstly: ! WELCOME to GKT
! Hope Fresher's Fortnight was fun
! Now a bit of school stuff begins
Years 1 & 2 ! Lecture based
! 35 Scenarios after Christmas till year 3 ! 12 in 1st year ! 17 in 2nd year
! Huge volume!
! If you really struggle with lectures and are more practical minded then Phase 3/4/5 are for you
! They count for your application
Types of medical student
1. Those who work all the way through
2. Those who cram
A balance
Habits to develop… ! Go to your lectures
! Even if you’ll be hung over, asleep, or uninterested, you will absorb knowledge
! Go to your tutorials ! Depending on your leader, they can be extremely helpful-‐ especially to
learn concepts ! Go through it beforehand ! Get involved!
! Go to dissection ! it is the best way to learn anatomy ! Even if you’re not into the idea, give it a try at least once
! Histology… ! Marks are marks, right? You should probably go
Outside of lectures: ! Make sure you have a set of notes to study from in exam time
! Find what works for you ! Annotations around the slides ! Write up every scenario ! Flashcards: www.quizlet.com ! Turn it into pictures??
! Make sure you understand what they’re talking about for now at least ! during exam time, focus on memorization
! If you don’t get it, watch the lecture again or open a book
! Learning extra is nice… but not necessary
Books/ Resources ! Money can be spent on lunch, drinks, and things to do in London
! library is your friend ! Save your book money for clinical years
! Books/ Resources: ! You might want an anatomy book, but Hunter’s key points are pretty

! Books NOT TO GET: ! anything with the word histology in the title ! Essential cell biology
Focus your studying ! All the exam questions come out of notes they give
you ! learning anything extra is enriching but extraneous
! It’s difficult to know at first but focus on what’s important ! try and learn what makes a difference in a lecture ! lecturers do tell you a lot of the time! A highlighter
helps ! E.g. lots of steps in glycolysis, but learn the rate-‐
limiting ones
What else? ! Some recommend taking 1.5 days a week to work/make
notes/ look things up
! Some lectures are in series, make sure you understand the early ones so you can get the later ones
! Talk to older years! They have been through it all-‐ teams, societies, friends are key
! Find someone who has a similar kind of mind to you…
! Be familiar with the exam style…
Take a break ! Make sure you have time to just chill
! Sports, societies, anything
! Get out of London for a weekend!
What not to miss out on ! These are your campus based years
! Join a sports team
! Take part in RAG ! Charity ! And FUN
! If there are things you dreamt of doing… now is your time
If things aren’t going so well…
! Utilize your tutor ! Friend problems ! Home problems ! Struggling with your work
