CATALOG POETRY
DEFINITIONS
• Catalog Poem – a poem that brings together many different images and presents them for the reader• Comes across as a list of images – has a rolling rhythm
when read aloud• Called catalog because it is cataloging or listing images
for you - like a catalog from a store, you are provided with several pictures (images)
• Apostrophe – the speaker addresses, or speaks directly to someone or something.
“WOMAN WORK” / “DAILY”
• Read “Woman Work” and “Daily” on pg. 409-410• Divide a sheet of paper in half. Title each side with
poems above. Answer the following for each. 1. Identify and list five activities that the speaker provides.2. What does the catalog of images in each tell you about
the life of the speaker? 3. What is the tone of each poem? Cite details from each
poem to support your chosen tone. 4. How does gender play a role in each poem? (Both were
written by a woman… how might they change if written by a man?)
5. For “Woman Work” only, identify where there is an apostrophe. What is she asking for in this part?
6. For “Daily” only, what is different about the last two lines of this poem? What is the speaker saying in these lines?
