The Role of SMEs in FP7
SMEs play an increasingly important role in the "research to innovation chain".
By the end of September 2012, SMEs made up 18.5% of all participations on the Cooperation programme.
74.5% of all projects involve at least one SME and 11.1% of all the projects have an SME as its coordinator.
Around 11,000 SMEs were involved in the Cooperation Programme with a budget share of 16.3 %.

The Role of SMEs in FP7
Within R&D project:• Not the main research partner• Application partner• Developer, targeting commercial applications after the
end of the project• System integration• Testing in real life environments• Future end user

Motivation: Pro and Contra
• PRO• Substantial Funding• Lower risk for new R&D• Profit from the other partners
• build new markets with the partners
• ...
• CONTRA• You share your ideas with others
• ‘Time to market’ very long ( > 3 years)
• ...
Long-term, strategic approach
Short term, market oriented approach

Calls for projects are published once a year.
Topics are chosen by the Commission.
Topics change every year!
The whole process from having the first idea to the start of the research takes up to 2 yr!
The final FP7 Calls is published

Cooperation - collaborative research:
This Project is funded by the EU
2 November 2012 1616
Who should take part in this programme?
- Innovative SMEs that have little or no research capacity themselves, that are looking for new markets, new business partners and possibilities to extend their knowledge-base through R&D and innovation.
- Research performing SMEs who need to complement their core research activities through outsourcing.
- It focuses on outsourcing research by SMEs to specialised 'RTD performers' (universities, research centres,…)
- It needs at least 3 SMEs and 2 RTD performers
Capacities - Research for the benefit of SMEs
