InstructorInformation:Dr.AngelaSubulwa Office:Sage4459;424.7110 Skype:subulwa.geographyEmail:subulwaa@uwosh.eduOfficeHours:subulwa.youcanbook.meCourseDescriptionGeography102emphasizesthedevelopmentofglobalawarenessasitappliestothecurrenteventsoftheday.Inthiscourse,wewilltakeapenetratinglookintothegeographicalrelationshipsbetweenhumansocietiesandcultures,thenaturalenvironment,andhistorical/politicalchangesthathaveshapedthecontemporaryworld.Thiscoursegoesbeyondsimplyasking“whatiswhere?”andseekstohelpusunderstandwhycertaingeographicpatternsoccurinparticularplacesandwhythatisimportantinpositioningourselvesintheworld.Wewillapproachourinvestigationsbydividingtheworldintodistinctregions.Throughoutthecourse,wewillexaminethevariousregionsoftheglobe,withafocusonareasoutsidetheUnitedStates&Canada.Wewillexaminegeographiesofculture,politics,andhistory,shiftingregionalandglobaleconomicpatterns,interconnectionsbetweenlocalandglobalwaysoflife,diffusionofpeopleandculturesthroughouttheworld,andwaysthatpeopleinteractwiththenaturalenvironmentincommunitiesacrosstheglobe.Allofthesediscussionsdeepenourunderstandingoftheformsofandsourcesofinteraction,interdependence,andinequityatthelocalandglobalscales.LiberalEducation,UniversityStudiesProgram,&YouLiberalEducationisanapproachtolearningandthinkingthatpreparesyoutonavigateanincreasinglycomplex,diverse,andchangingworldbyteachingyouhowtolearn,think,andengageinmeaningfulways.Aliberaleducationincludesageneraleducationcurriculum(ofwhichthiscourseisapart)thatexposesyoutomultipledisciplinesandwaysoflearning/knowing/engaging,alongwithmorein-depthinquiryintoyourspecificareaofinterest.Thisapproachtoeducationempowersyouwithbroadknowledgeandasenseofsocialresponsibility,aswellasstrongandtransferableintellectualandpracticalskills.
