After rave reviews for her shows - The Women
of the 60s” and “The Belles of Broadway”, the
fabulous Gina Hogan returns to the stage with
another standout show featuring songs from
Doris Day and Shirley Bassey.
These two iconic women are as different as night
and day, yet Gina moves effortlessly from Doris,
the quintessential all-American “girl next door”,
to the dramatic and powerful Shirley, capturing
the essence of these two women.
You will be taken on a trip down memory lane,
with stories and music performed as only Gina
can, with her amazing vocal versatility and
engage stage presence.

WW2 Local Story Mutual Surprise
Snow Miles Leads an Ambush Party
Shortly after daybreak 18 Aussies recently took up ambush near a track junction in the Torricelli Mountains in the Aitape area of British New Guinea. The men had just hidden themselves about 10 feet off the track. Suddenly from behind me came a chattering. Our men looked round and there were the Japs, sitting within 15 feet. “At first I thought the yabbering must have been kanakas” said Sergeant N J Hughes of Leichhardt NSW. “But when we had a look there were two Japs sitting up. They were just below a four foot dip in the ground in a native garden. One, eating sugar cane, even looked right at where we were sitting. He went on eating and obviously failing to see us.” The ambush party immediately opened fire and more Japs appeared and began to return fire. The Australians killed at least three for certain of the 15 to 30 Japs scattered through the garden. The day before a reconnaissance patrol had been watching the track junction, between two enemy held villages. On their return one of the patrol estimated “there was more traffic on the pad than on St Kilda Road.” It was learned that the Nips would dig the vegetables and pick the fruit one day and send down a large carrying party early next morning. So the infantrymen left company lines in darkness at 4.15a.m arriving at the native garden site nearly an hour later, just as the sun was rising. But the Japs, whether varying their normal foraging custom or whether they sighted the previous day’s recce patrol and had anticipated an attack, apparently slept the night in the garden. After a sharp short exchange the infantry-men withdrew from the position. Enemy parties from villages on their left and right flanks were in a position to trap them but the Australians left without casualty. Lieut. Cyril H Miles, M.C. of Calivil Creek was in charge of the party which included Ptes. R. Fuller, Gippsland, W. Wilson, Barongarook; and P Ballantyne, Rupanyup.
For further stories about this the copy of the Japanese surrender is in the RSL Museum at Pyramid Hill.

Tuesday Night Netball
This week’s games saw Pink take on the revitalised Red team in the 7pm game. With both teams having a few fill ins it took a couple of minutes for them to gel but Pink finally clicked to take a commanding 8 goal lead at quarter time. Red made some changes and showed that last weeks win wasn't a fluke and closed the gap to 5 by half time. In the second half Pink tightened up in defence and Red couldn't find an answer. Pink won with 35 goals to 16. In the 8pm game Blue faced off against Purple in what was a hotly fought contest. Blue had the edge every quarter and with Megan not missing from all parts of the circle Blue ended up winning by 20 goals. The final scores were Blue with 46 goals and Purple with 26 goals. In next weeks games Purple play Red in the early game and Green play Pink in the late game. Blue has the bye.

Thanks to all who attended to the essential tasks, including raffle donations, to ensure the smooth operation of the day. The place looked as pristine as the Flemington Racecourse and the day went off like clockwork to thrill the large spectator crowd in attendance. Attendance figures were slightly up on previous occasions. At the lunch break, Ernie was presented with a framed certificate from Victoria Bowls in recognition of his recent accomplishment of ninety years of age… and still able to put down a mean bowl! Congratu-lations, Ernie! It’s a fine innings with a myriad of contributions made to the Bowling Club over many decades. A truly chronologically gifted gentleman! Round five will not be played until November 12th when Divisions 1 and 3 will both travel to Wakool. Let’s hope for a fine day and great bowling – pleasant weather and no mozzies, please!
The 60 and Over games were
played at Leitchville this week with
a team comprised of 3 A’s and a B -
Andy, Allan F., Alan J & Bill. They
didn’t win a chicken to take home
but beat Chicken in their second
game, which gave them something to
crow about.
Mid-week Friday Pennant: After parading in the mounting yard in their club colours, this week saw the teams go in different directions with Division 1 tracking to Kerang Golf and Division 2 dashing off to Barham Services.

Pyramid Bowling Club
After giving Mother Nature a bit of a roasting last week in reference to the challenging weather conditions forked out on Pennant Days, she retaliated with force of a different kind. Last Saturday the weather conditions were near perfect for bowling, but her revenge was in the form of nasty, biting, stinging insects that made us clap our hands, stamp our feet and slap our thighs as we danced to the bite of the mosquito. Please bring back the winds! Saturday Pennant The visiting Leitchville folk were soon introduced to the local stomp as they fought the good fight against the mozzies. Using the pesky insects to enhance our artillery we went into battle and generally put up a good showing against the third-placed team on the current ladder. As the day wore on and the mozzies slowed down the opponents picked up their pace and came away winners in Division1. The Kerang Blue Division 3 team took a similar path; they also went away with a win but not without enduring some stiff competition.
Results: Division 1- Fred (skip),
Laurie, Marie N. & Bill took the game
right up to their very talented
opponents and after flying out of the
barrier and off to a great start were
pegged back and over-run in the home
-stretch of the race to the finish second
like Heartbreak City in the Melbourne
Cup. Their 5 shot loss was a disap-
pointing closure and a half –head short
of a win - obviously more chaff was
needed. Lionel (Skip), Kate, Jean &
Andy got caught up in the stalls and
needed drug testing after failing to
impose any threat and only managing
to score 7 shots against 39.
. The backers of that team would be throwing their tickets into the trash early into the day as the writing was on the wall from the first lap and they trotted home a bit like Rose of Virginia. Their opponents were red-hot and could not to be reined in. Beau (Skip), Marie S, Jan & Graham were the front performers for the PH stables and were able to register a comfortable win 27-18, thanks to a superb steer by Beau. Their win not only avoided a white-wash win for Leitchville but earned them the trophy for the day. They finished with a lead bigger than Alman-din’s win. The Leitchville folk could prance back to their retiring stables with an 82 - 57 wreath of glory to celebrate their victory.
Division 3: in similar fashion, Division 3
managed to get the winners’ ribbon on
one of the three rinks – that being the rink
once again led by the ever reliable and
consistent staying performance of Brian
(Skip). Nola, George & Lorraine F.
worked up to a good lead by the lunch
break but a few unfortunate checks placed
them in a precarious position as they
rounded the final turn. They managed to
cross the line just a neck in front 24-20.
Jan(Skip), Lorraine D, Ernie & Rose were
slow out of the starting barrier but made
up ground quickly in the final stages. A
few more lengths to the course may have
seen them in the winners’ circle as they
closed the gap to score 22-25. Allan F.
(Skip), Robyn, Alan J and Leigh found
the track up-hill at first but then came
home with a rush to acclaim a creditable
15-39 shots loss. They are encroaching on
the winning stalls little by little each
week. Overall Kerang Blue could parade
back to Kerang having won 84-61.
Recognition must be given to the green
keepers, the ladies who made and served
the afternoon tea, Bill for making
adjustments to the handles of the bowls
rakes, and Andy who did the majority of
the pre-match rink duty.

Division 1 Results: Division 1 came back to the mounting yard holding the cup aloft having taken a win on all rinks. It was a tightly contested match all day but the pace seriously rose coming into the final straight. Jan (Skip), Nola, Andy & Graham sprinted away to put plenty of space between themselves and the rest of the field. Their 32-17 (15 shot) victory made the end result seem comfortable. Marie S., Glenys, Marg & Bill moved through the field with steady pace towards the final stages to absolutely smoke the rest of the field (28-21). Kate (Skip), Marie N., Ian & Helen were locked in a nose by a nose tussle and either team could have finished as the winner but the PH team proved the better stayers holding their nerve to win 21-19. An overall win of 81- 57 gave the crowds plenty to cheers about in what was truly a race to remember. Division 2 Results: The run of Barham Services was strong and, although there was no handicapping or penalties, the Pyramid Hill folk found the track not to their liking. The team led by Jean (Dawn & Wayne) showed plenty of promise and held a comfortable lead all day winning 29-11; their 18 shot success securing the Incentive Award. Well done and well played! The other two rinks couldn’t muster the strength to run with their breakaway opponents and had to be content with a finish that placed them with the also rans.
Obviously too much chaff with the oats! Jenny (Skip), Beth & Allan F lan-guished midfield to produce a 12-31 (19 shot) loss. Lorraine (Skip), Gladys & Rose suffered the same demise, feeding from the same nose bags, and also finishing 19 shots (9-28) in arrears – a gallant run in a tough field. What a contest! Well done to Barham Services and all connections. Now it’s back to the stables and training track where perhaps some swabs need to be taken to see which brew will help produce more favourable results. With no Mid-week Pennant bowls now until Friday 18th November there is an opportunity to get in some much need track work in an effort to get players into peak condition for the matches to come.

dependent on overseas funds. Their mission work is quite broad: training widows so they can have gainful
employment, working with disabled people, running orphanages, digging wells for fresh water in villages as well as evangelism and running
church congregations. The Pyramid Hill Uniting Church has been
supporting the organisation for about 18 months.
All welcome
Thanks to Jean and Lionel who opened their home to the Bowling Club members for a BBQ and social evening last Saturday night. It was fantastic to spend a few hours in a relaxed atmosphere and a special time to christen the outdoor setting gifted to them by their bowling friends on the occasion of their wedding. Thanks for your hospitality, Jean & Lionel.

“Sale O, Hooroo and Sundries” is about the pioneer families who came and settled the district. What they did, the droughts they lived through, the banks foreclosing on mortgages, the properties that were sold up and what was sold at the clearance sales. All
this is revealed through notices in the Pyramid Advertiser. “Sale O, Hooroo
and Sundries” can even tell you
where some of the people went.
“Sale O, Hooroo and Sun-
dries” contains maps of Mologa, Terrick West, Mincha, Mincha West,
Yarrawalla and Loddon Parishes showing detail of each property
boundary and who resided on that property through those years and includes a comprehensive index of
families.
