SANFRANCISCO,ANDWCC,FAREWELLOUTWEST:Afteraconvincing4-1victoryoverdefendingBigWestChampionUCSantaBarbaraSunday,theUSFwomen’ssoccerteamhasearnedaspotWestRegiontop-10,asannouncedbytheNationalSoccerCoachesAssociationofAmerica(NSCAA)Mon-day.TheDonsarecurrentlyrankedseventhintheWest,boastinganunblemished3-0-0record.Theregionalrankmarksthefirsttimesince2004thatUSFhasearnedtherecognition.Thisweek,alleightWestCoastConferenceschoolsappearintherank.PortlandtopstherankingswithSanDiego,andSantaClararoundingoutthetopthree.Pepperdineislistedfifth,followedbyLoyolaMarymountandUSF.SaintMary’sisrankedeighthandGonzagaroundsoutWCCschoolstiedfortenth.

ASHLEY O’BRIEN EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION: Ashley O’Brien has been named a nationalPrimetimePerformeroftheWeek,asannouncedbyCollegeSoccer360.com.O’Brienplayedanin-tegralroleintheDons’twovictorieslastweek,scoringtwogoalsandanassist.WithninesecondsremainingintheopeninghalfagainstNorthFlorida,theseniordefenderscoredanunassistedgoaloffofafreekick.Sunday,inabig4-1victoryoverdefendingBigWestChampionUCSantaBarbara,O’Briencappedscoringwithagoallateinthematch.AfterbeingpassedtheballfromMollyHall,Theseniorfiredashotfrom10yardsoutintotheleftsideofthenet.O’BrienalsoregisteredherassistSunday,assistingonHannaHaanes’game-winninggoalinthefirsthalf.

FRESHMENCARRYDONSINOPENINGCONTEST:SanFrancisco’soffenseintheopeninggamefiredoff13shots,nineinthefirsthalf,whiletheSpartanstookjustsix.OftheDons’13totalshots,USFnewcomersac-countedforsix,nearlyhalf.ThefreshmenalsotalliedthreeoftheGreenandGold’ssixshotsongoal.Totopitoff,newcomers–ChristinaMobergandHannaHaanes-accountedforallofthescoringforUSF,asMobergregisteredagoalandassistandHaanes,agoal.

DONS FACETOUGH CHALLENGE AHEAD: Ten home matches and seven NCAA postseason teams high-lighttheDons’2010slate.SanFranciscowillspilttheseasonevenlybetweenNegoescoStadiumandtheroad,playing10asthehometeamand10asthevisitors.Despitetheevenschedule,USFwillnotspendanightawayfromhomeuntiltheyheadtotheStateofArizonathefirstweekendofOctober.Includedintheschedulearesevencontestsagainstteamsthatadvancedtothepostseasonlastyear,includingWestCoastConferenceChampionPortland.In2009,theperennialpowerhousePilotsadvancedtothequarterfinalsoftheNCAAChampionship.

TWONORWEGIANSARRIVEONTHEHILLTOP:ChristinaMobergandHannaHaanes,bothnativesofNor-way,areinthefirstseasonoftheircollegiatecareersatUSF.HannescomestoSanFranciscowithaplethoraofinternationalexperienceunderherbelt.ThefreshmanhascompetedfortheU16,U17,U19,U20andU23NorwegianNationalTeams.ShewasnamedPlayeroftheMatchintwoEuropeanChampionshipcontests.MobergjoinstoUSFafter leadingFirstDivisionAskerFKtoa2007NorwegianCupChampionship.WhileplayingforAsker,Mobergtalliedanimpressive30goals.Todate,theduohasrecordedfourgoalsandtwoassistsforUSF,whiletaking10shots,fiveongoal.TwooftheDons’threegame-winninggoalshavecomethankstotheeffortsoftheNorwegians.

25thANNIVERSARYOFWOMEN’SSOCCER:The2010seasonmarksthe25thAnniversaryofwomen’ssoccerontheHilltop.In1985,ErikVisserbecamethefirstheadcoachoftheprogram,recruitingessentiallyateamofwalk-ons.Sincetheprogramsfounding,Visserhasmovedontobecometheheadcoachof themen’sprogramandthewomen’ssoccerprogramhasamasseda177-266-33all-timerecord.

FRESHMENSEETIMEASSTARTERS:Fivefreshman-overhalfoftheincomingclass-haveearnedstartingnodssofar in2010.HannaHaanes,ChristinaMobergandTylerCampagnahaveeachearnedstarts inallthreematches,whileLaylaMartinandHeatherHaneyhavestartedonematchapiece.KellyHoose,KelseyMoeandAndieStone,allnewcomersthisseason,havealsoseensignificantplayingtimeasreservesfortheDons.
