DONSOPENHOMESLATE4-0:Throughthefirstfourhomematchesoftheseason,USFwas4-0-0whenplayontheHilltop.ThelasttimetheDonswent4-0toopenthehomeslatewasin1997.

NORWEGIANDUOEARNSNATIONALATTENTION:ChristinaMobergandHannaHaanes,bothfreshmenontheUSFwomen’ssoccerteam,havebeennamedtotheTopDrawerNational100Division ICollegeFreshmen.MobergandHaanes,bothnativesofNorway,aretwoofeightfreshmenfromtheWestCoastConferencetoappearonthisweek’slist.Mobergisranked89ththisweek,whileHaanesislistedat91st.SanFranciscoisjustoneoftwoWestCoastConferenceschoolstolandtwoormorefreshmaninthisweek’sranks.Portlandleadsthepackwiththreehonors, including the highest rankedWCC representative, Erin Dees.The Pilots’ goalkeeperchecksinatNo.9.LoyolaMarymount,SantaClara,PepperdineandSaintMary’sallhaveonestudent-athleteranked.

ASHLEY O’BRIEN EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION: Ashley O’Brien was named a national Prime-timePerformeroftheWeek,asannouncedbyCollegeSoccer360.com,fortheweekofSept.1.O’BrienplayedanintegralroleintheDons’winsoverNorthFloridaandUCSantaBarbara,scoringtwogoalsandanassist.WithninesecondsremainingintheopeninghalfagainstNorthFlorida,theseniorde-fenderscoredanunassistedgoaloffofafreekick.Sunday,Aug.29,inabig4-1victoryoverdefendingBigWestChampionUCSantaBarbara,O’Briencappedscoringwithagoal late in thematch.AfterbeingpassedtheballfromMollyHall,Theseniorfiredashotfrom10yardsoutintotheleftsideofthenet.O’BrienalsoregisteredherassistagainsttheGauchos,assistingonHannaHaanes’game-winninggoalinthefirsthalf.

UNBLEMISHEDTOSTARTTHESEASON:SanFrancisco’s3-0-0unblemishedrecordtoopentheseasonmarkedthefirsttimesince1996thattheDonshadgoneundefeatedagainstatrioofDivisionIfoestoopentheseason.Lastyear,USFopenedwitha3-0-0mark,facingoneDivisionIopponent.

OFFENSEONSTRONGPACE:SanFrancisco’soffensehassteppedupitsgamethisfall,alreadyscoringoverhalfofthegoalsscoredlastyearfortheDons.In2009,USFrecorded23goalsontheseason.Todate,SanFranciscohasposted12inninematches.Individually,theDonsarepostingbetternumbersaswell.Forthepasttwoseasons,theDons’assistleaderfortheseasonhadrecordedtwoassists.ThreemembersoftheGreenandGoldaccomplishedthefeatin2008,whilesixdidlastseason.Thisseason,MollyHallpacesthepackawiththreeassists.Inaddition,HannaHaaneshastiedthetop-goalscor-erstotalforthepasttwoyearswithfournetted.ThelasttimeaDonscoredmorethanfourgoalsinaseasonwasin2006whenFionaO’Sullivantalliedfive.

DONSIMPROVEGREATLYIN2009:AccordingtoSopisSports–asportsinformationcompanythatcoverscollegiatesports,theUSFwomen’ssoccerprogramwasoneofthemostimprovedDivisionIwomen’ssoccerprogramsin2009.USFfinished23rdintheranking,witha1.08improvementrating.SanFranciscoposteda5-13-2recordin2008,beforeimprovingto7-7-5in2009.

TWONORWEGIANSARRIVEONTHEHILLTOP:ChristinaMobergandHannaHaanes,bothnativesofNorway,areinthefirstseasonoftheircollegiatecareersatUSF.HannescomestoSanFranciscowithaplethoraofinternationalexperienceunderherbelt.ThefreshmanhascompetedfortheU16,U17,U19,U20andU23NorwegianNationalTeams.ShewasnamedPlayeroftheMatchintwoEuropeanChampionshipcontests.MobergjoinstoUSFafterleadingFirstDivisionAskerFKtoa2007NorwegianCupChampionship.WhileplayingforAsker,Mobergtalliedanimpressive30goals.Todate,theduohasrecordedsevengoalsandtwoassistsforUSF,whiletaking23shots,14ongoal.TwooftheDons’fourgame-winninggoalshavecomethankstotheeffortsoftheNorwegians.

DONS EARN FIRST REGIONAL RANK IN SIXYEARS: After a convincing 4-1 victory over defendingBigWest Champion UC Santa Barbara Aug. 29, the USF women’s soccer team earned a spotWestRegiontop-10,asannouncedbytheNationalSoccerCoachesAssociationofAmerica(NSCAA).TheDonswererankedseventhintheWest.Theregionalrankmarkedthefirsttimesince2004thatUSFhasearnedtherecognition.
