West Virginia Board of Education Policy 4321.1, Standards for School Nutrition (7/1/2008)– Created a nutritional quality gap between programs

Developing the StandardsPartnerships, Part IDelaware Department of Education– First state to implement standards for nutrition

and physical activity in child care settings• Delaware CACFP/Delacare Child Nutrition and Physical

Activity Rules• Based on the American Academy of Pediatrics child

nutrition best practices and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans

• Applied to both Child Care Centers AND Day Care Homes• Implemented through CACFP and their Office of Child Care

Licensing (OCCL)

Developing the Standards

“Leap of Taste”West Virginia Department of Education– Developed the “Leap of Taste” Child Care Nutrition

Standards• Modeled after Delaware’s initial “Delacare” Nutrition Rules

– Applied for, but did not receive initial funding, to help develop and implement Leap of Taste

– Moved forward with the standards without funding– Unlike the Standards for School Nutrition, did not need

legislative or board approval, a public comment period, etc.
