• Criteria

• Matrices

• Design Selection + Analysis

• Summary

Xerox iGen 4

• Commercial printer

• 110 ppm

• 200,000 - 3,750,000 pages per month

• 4,800 x 600 resolution

• Modular Design

Problem Statement/Need

• Bad stacks can cause job integrity issues and lead to stacks falling over

• We recognize the need to design a sensor that detects stack quality

Stacks

• Makes paper easier to handle

• Organizes customer projects

Good Stacks

Bad Stacks

Customer Needs

• Detect bad stacks within a tolerance of 5mm

• Design a sensor for the iGen4

Laser

• Position detection laser

• Detects an interruption in the stack

• 3 sensors to measure each axis

Pressure Sensor

• Detects variations in the weight distribution of the paper

• If stacks are aligned properly, each sensor will be the same

Optical Sensor

• Uses a camera and optical recognition to detect paper placement

• Placed above the paper

Infrared Motion Detector

• Uses infrared light to detect variance from a perfect stack

• Similar to Laser

Criteria

• Cost

• Complexity

• Ease of Installation

• Upkeep

Matrices

Design Selection + Analysis

• Our best idea was the infrared sensor

• Best score in all criteria

• 3 infrared detectors for each axis

Summary

• Final choice is Infrared Sensor

• Technology already in use and easy to implement in the iGen4

• Best choice
