YAKIMA BEARS TRIVIA
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
The boys of summer are back.
For the last 20 years, the Yakima Bears have filled the long — and often hot — summer days with the sounds of baseball.
Yakima opens its 21st season tonight against the Boise Hawks at Yakima County Stadium.
This is a look at those two decades of teams, players and moments in the 20 years since the Salem Dodgers moved to the Yakima Valley and set up shop at Parker Field.
The modern-day Bears joined an illustrious history that was the Northwest League in Yakima.
The original Bears, who followed several different pro franchises in Yakima — Pippins, Stars, Indians — were a charter member of the NWL and one of the league’s best.
Under the guide of Hub Kittle, who was the pitching
coach with the St. Louis Cardinals when they won the World Series in 1982, the Bears won championships in 1956, ’58 and ’59.
Buddy Hicks would lead them to titles in 1960 and 1963, before Kittle returned to the bench for the 1964 season and the team’s sixth championship.
Because of an affiliation with the Atlanta Braves, Yakima’s team was renamed the Braves in 1966. The next year they were gone.
Twenty-four years later, Yakima got pro ball back.
Here’s a look at the 20 years since.

4D ultrasound is a live 3D ultrasound exam. It is used to allow mom and dad to see a live image of their baby at 28-32 weeks.Ultrasound takes images from a few different angles, which reveal more detailed images of the fetus, such as facial features.Sunnyside Community Hospital will now be incorporating the 4D imaging in all pregnancy ultrasounds on patients who fall between the 28-32 week mark.
Digital mammography means quicker, more accurate diagnosis of potential breast cancer. Our digital mammography unit is the only one in all of Yakima County. So if you want the latest and best diagnostic options available for your annual mammogram… the choice is clear.

ORABLEPLAYERSSelected in the first round of the 1994 draft as a catcher, Konerko played on the Bears’ first championship team and was an all-league selection as a designated hitter. After brief stints with the Los Angeles
Dodgers and Cincin-nati Reds, he broke out in 1999 with the Chicago White Sox, hitting 24 home runs and driving in 81 runs. One of the top power hitters in the majors, he has topped the 30-home run mark in five seasons. The three-time All-Star (2002, 2005, 2006) and MVP of the 2005 American League Championship Series is likely to hit his 350th home run and knock in his 1,110th run this season, his 12th with the White Sox.
Paul Konerko
Ted LillyLilly was one
of three major league pitchers on
the Bears’ 1996 championship
team and sported a 4-0 record and a minuscule 0.84
earned-run average while striking out
75 and walking just 14. In 12 seasons
and pitching for five teams, he has
a 105-89 record through Sunday’s start in which he
took a no-hitter to the ninth inning
before giving up a leadoff single. Lilly
made the 2004 American League
All-Star team while with the Toronto
Blue Jays and was the Chicago Cubs’
lone representa-tive last season. In
2008, he led the NL with 34 starts
and posted a career-high 17 wins
with the Cubs.

The first-round draft pick out of Cal wasted little time making an impact as he set the Northwest League record with 35 doubles despite missing eight games. He hit .300 in 2008 with the Arizona Diamondbacks while smacking 12 home runs and driving in 75 runs. Earlier this week he was traded
from the Diamondbacks to the Oakland Athletics.

The free-swing-ing third baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks displayed the pop he’s become famous for in the 2004 season with the Bears as he hit 12 home runs with Yakima. After slugging 28 hom-ers in 2008, he hit 44 last season, ranking him fourth in the National
League. It’s come with a price, however, as he has the dubious distinction of setting the major league record for strikeouts in a season with 204 in 2008. He topped that mark last year with 223.

Dan ugglaThe second baseman,
who played for the Yakima Bears in 2001,
was recently voted to the Northwest League’s
all-decade team. Uggla made the first of his two National League All-Star
teams in 2006, the same year he finished third
in the voting for the NL Rookie of the Year as he
finished the year with 27 home runs and 90
RBI. Also an NL All-Star in 2008, Uggla
has developed into one of the top power-hit-
ting middle infielders in
the majors and has eclipsed the 130-HR mark in his
fifth season.

Shane VictorinoThe outfielder, who is affectionately known as “The Flyin’ Hawaiian” for his island heritage and speed on the base paths and in the field, was part of the 2000 Bears championship team. After playing in the minors for
several years, he broke into the Philadelphia Phil-lies starting lineup in 2006 and has been a fixture ever since, earning Gold Gloves in 2008 and 2009 and winning a fan vote for the final roster spot on last year’s National League All-Star team. In Game 2 of the Phillies’ NL Division Series vic-tory against the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008, Victorino hit his first major league grand slam. Philadelphia would win that series and eventually the World Series.
