PRAYER

Prayer- True NorthDear Lord,

In our search for True North, help us to recognise that we have You as a compass in our lives.

In an ever-changing world, You are a true guide amid shifting morals and fluctuating ideals.

Grant us the wisdom to recognise that True North is our fixed point in a spinning world that will help us to stay on track.

PRAYER

Grant us the courage to listen to our internal compass which represents who we are at our deepest level.

Grant us the strength to withstand our fears, failures and circumstance and to embrace the joy within our soul.

As we continue our journey, we place our trust in You.

Amen.

TEACHING & LEARNING

Academic Overview – Pathways ChosenAll students will work towards a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE)

Regardless of their different goals:• University• Tertiary Institutions (e.g. TAFE)• Employment

TEACHING & LEARNING

QCAA issues the QCE

TEACHING & LEARNING

The Queensland Certificate ofEducation (QCE) is the qualification distributed by the QLD Curriculum & Assessment Authority (QCAA) for all students who successfully complete Senior school.• Requires 20 Credit points.• Passing a school subject = 1 Credit point.• 6 subjects Passed = 24 Credits.• Completed VET results also count.

UNIT 1 (Year 11)

satisfactory

UNIT 2(Year 11)

satisfactory

UNIT 3(Year 11/12)

UNIT 4(Year 12)

QLD Certificate of Education (QCE)

• From Unit 1 through to Unit 4 students must pass with a ‘Satisfactory’ result in each. Units 3 & 4 are paired and the final Exit Result becomes the doubled Credit grade.

• A maximum of 4 Credits per Subject.• This has value because it may be considered by employers and the general

community.

TEACHING & LEARNING

In 2019 100% of the cohort achieved a QCE. Our College goal is to continue this outcome.

QTAC issues the ATARs

The Qld Tertiary Admissions Centre will apply student summative academic results (Year 12) and subject comparisons to score an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for each student. This is used for graduates' direct entry into a university bachelor degree.

TEACHING & LEARNING

QTAC calculates ATARs

• Students get a number between 30.00 and 99.95. An ATAR of 80.00 indicates that the student is in the top 20% of the State. (Each ATAR score represents about 30 students.)

• ATAR tells us about a student's position / ranking compared to all other students in the State.

• The intended purpose of the ATAR is to assist with selecting of student for Tertiary studies.

TEACHING & LEARNING

Calculating results for ATAR Subjects• General subjects and possibly 1 Applied• Assessment tasks have been endorsed by QCAA• IAs will be marked by teachers but later

confirmed by the QCAA• For reporting, results will remain provisional until

after Confirmation events• Teachers are confident their professional

judgements will meet confirmation standards.

• Our teens to be safe• To enjoy our family life• Our teens to be happy and well adjusted

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS

What our teens want• To be noticed and acknowledged (but not overprotected)• Some freedom (seek to increase independence)• Some privacy• Spend time with their friends• Be accepted for who they are• Some control• Meaningful existence

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS

Disconnection/Conflict• Difficulty with perspective taking• Concerned about self• Not children, not adults, changes, adjustment, hormones• Who am I? Identity? Purpose? Meaning?• Brain developing• Poor emotional regulation (impulsive, emotions exaggerated)• Communication• Independence

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS

The 3 D's• Driving

• Dating

• Drinking/Drugs

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS

Biology of the Brain

by understanding the developing adolescent brain we can see its influence on teen behaviour and strong emotional reactions.

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS

Current trends & promoting well-being

• Mental health issues• Stress• Relationships• Social media• Sleep• Risk-taking behavior

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS

Maintaining a relationship• The most important thing to do as a parent is to maintain

a relationship.• Main task is to work out what requires a response.• A level of security about who’s in charge, rules, steps up

and is reliable.• In the face of teenager’s testing behavior we can react

emotionally (rather than with good judgement).

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS

Communication with teens

• Identify what behaviour is annoying (ignore), wanted (encourage), unacceptable (tough conversation). Negotiate…

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS

Message to take home• Families high in support and low in conflict help teens

thrive.• Fluctuating mood is a part of teens growing up and

helps them learn how to deal with life’s difficulties.• Making mistakes, builds resilience.• Parents need to stay calm, listen, and hang on for the

ride.

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS

When to worry…• Withdrawal from peers• Sustained decline in

academic performance• Two to three weeks of

depressed mood• No longer enjoying or

engaging in what was previously enjoyed
