UNITY ANNUAL CONFERENCE

YEARBOOK

Year Ending July, 1946

Affiliated with UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY

917 Tracy Avenue Kansas City 6, Mo.

Uinued /Utauet The past presidents of the Unity Annual

Conference make up the Devotional Committee. It is our privilege to unite in the prayer below, which is being used faithfully by the devoted members of this committee.

Our heavenly Father, ever mindful of Thy great love and tender mercy, we lift our hearts in praise and thanksgiving, and lovingly dedicate ourselves anew to Thy service.

We give grateful thanks for the new day of light and opportunity and the establishment of world peace. May we prove ourselves worthy of all the sacrifices that have made this day possible!

Help us to abide in the consciousness of Thy presence, that we may face each day with courage and confidence. Allay all fear and anxiety. Fill our hearts with Thy forgiving love. Illumine our minds with spiritual understanding. Open our eyes to behold the vision splendid; and may our lives express only Thy compassion. Thy beauty, and Thy peace!

Amen. Devotional Committee Herbert J. Hunt, Chairman

Inspired by the Spirit of wisdom, we ministers and leaders in the Unity movement have formed the Unity Annual Conference for the purpose of meeting together once a year to raise the Christ consciousness in one another and in the centers.

We seek to stress the realization that Christ in each of us is our leader and teacher and that His inspiration gives original, divine, and orderly ideas, and that to Him alone we look. As each member recognizes and follows the divine within himself all will be raised to His glory.

ARTICLE 1. NAME. This organization shall be known as the Unity Annual Conference.

ARTICLE 2. PURPOSE. The purpose of this organization shall be to co-operate with Christ in promoting an annual conference of recognized Unity leaders and ministers, who meet to exchange ideas for the uplift and advancement of the teachings of practical Christianity.

After the close of the 1935 Conference, new applicants can be accepted for membership only if they have been ordained by Unity School of Christianity or if their ordination has been approved by the Field Department and the Unity Training School Board. Officials of Unity School ol Christianity who have not been ordained may be elected by the Executive Board to honorary

28

The President and Vice President must be elected from the membership of the Executive Board. The Secretary-Treasurer may be an official of Unity School of Christianity and not a member of the Board.

ARTICLE 6. VACANCIES. The Executive Board shall have power to fill all vacancies for the unexpired term of any member of this Board who may resign or be otherwise disqualified. If a member of the Executive Board is absent at any Annual Conference, the Board shall appoint someone else to act and vote in his place during that conference period only.

ARTICLE 7. VOTING. At each Annual Conference the Executive Board shall submit a list of at least twelve (12) names as nominees. Additional names may be added to this list by nominations from the floor. From these nominees the members of the Conference present shall elect by ballot four members

29

to serve on the Executive Board for a period of three (3) years and until their successors have been duly elected and qualified,

ARTICLE 8. BYLAWS. All bylaws and regulations for the government of themselves and the Annual Conference shall be formulated by the Executive Board.

ARTICLE 9. AMENDMENTS. The Constitution and Bylaws can be amended or revised at any annual meeting of the Executive Board by a two-thirds (%) majority vote of its members present, after the amendment has been approved by a majority of the Conference members present and voting.

ARTICLE 7. In order to be accepted as a recognized Unity center, a center shall eliminate all textbooks and teachings that do not conform to the Christ standard as recognized by the Unity School of Christianity, Kansas City, Missouri. This does not exclude any book or lessons that conform to this standard.

ARTICLE 8. All centers shall make regular annua! reports to the Field Department, on forms supplied by the Field Department, and copies of all announcements and printed matter mailed out by the local centers shall be mailed to the office of the Field Department.

Compliance with these qualifications shall be enforced without exception or favor.

ARTICLE 11. Licensed Unity ministers and teachers are required to be actively engaged in fulfilling prescribed preparation and must have a good record in their present field work. They are authorized teachers, but not ordained. Licensed Unity ministers and teachers are privileged to have their names listed in the U. A. C. Yearbook as a separate group. The use of the name "Unity" is granted them, as well as the co-operation that the Field Department extends to Conference members. From year to year the names of those who discontinue study and active co-operation with Unity School are to be dropped from the list of licensed ministers and teachers.

It is recommended to Unity School of Christianity that condidates for ordination be not ordained before they have successfully passed this examination.

CODE OF ETHICS UNITY ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Adopted at Kansas City, Mo. August 24, 1934

I The Unity ministry is and shall be main

tained as a holy ministry conducted in the name of Jesus Christ, to the glory of God, and in service to mankind.

II The motto of this group shall be "We look

to Christ as the directive head of this movement, inspiring, guiding, and prospering us."

Ill We will always and in every way within

our ability assist in the advancement of the influence and power of any center in which we visit or speak. We will always recommend its ministry and services both publicly and privately to all within its territory.

IV We will not seek in any way, directly or

indirectly, to draw to us correspondents or

33

personal students from any center or group in which we have been a guest speaker.

V

In any center or group in which we have been a student, we will fully co-operate with and obtain the approval of the leader of the group or center, as well as co-operate with the Field Department of Unity School, before we perform in any way, directly or indirectly, a personal healing ministry, or begin any personal or group teaching.

VI

We will not attempt to carry on Unity work in any city without first obtaining the full approval of the Field Department for such work and securing the co-operation of already active and progressive Unity leaders in that vicinity.

(One who wishes to start a new Unity work in any community shall ask for the written consent of the authorized Unity leaders in that community.)

VII

We recognize the advisability of the Field Department's sanctioning the establishment of an additional center in any city where statistics and information show that the field is not already adequately covered.

VIII

It is the sense of this organization that we work in perfect harmony and accord with the Field Department of Unity School in our speaking and teaching program, that we place no speaker or teacher on our platform who is not acceptable to the Field Department, and that we consult the Field Department whenever the teacher, lecturer, or course of lessons is subject to doubt.

34

IX

It is incumbent upon each and every member of the Unity Annual Conference to hold in esteem and respectful regard all fellow members and to use all rightful means to protect the personal and professional honor of every other member.

X

Each member shall also respect the work, both public and private, of his fellow members, shall uphold them in their endeavor to carry on the practices and duties of the Christian ministry, and shall render at any and all times such co-operative assistance as may be solicited and mutually agreed upon, no member interfering with the work or practice of another.

XI

Each member shall conduct his work, private and public, after the standards and in accord with the teachings and ideals of Unity School of Christianity at Kansas City, Missouri, without competition and contention, realizing that the more truly he practices the principles of this Conference and this School the greater will be the good redounding to each and all immediately concerned, and to the community at large.

XII

Each and every member is in honor bound to hold sacred all confidences reposed in him. Confessions of error or seeming misconduct made in conferences or consultations and any defects of character or any misbehavior revealed to a member while engaged in his practice as a healer or adviser shall be kept secret and held inviolate and never divulged to another person regardless of that other person's status or relation.

35

XIII

The name, residence, or locality of any person under treatment in the past or present shall never be mentioned privately or publicly in illustration or verification of the principles of healing, the ministry of healing or counseling being held to be sacred and therefore to be conducted with reverence and with the strictest regard for the sensibilities and individual rights of patients and supplicants who in good faith and confidence have committed themselves to the consideration and mercy of any member of this Conference.

XIV

We sincerely devote ourselves to living in accord with this Code in letter and in spirit, and to seeing it made manifest in all others, thus bringing to ourselves only associations and conditions that harmonize with this Code.

IMPORTANT CONFERENCE DECISIONS

It was decided to adopt the following resolution presented by the Executive Board of the Unity Annual Conference:

"That the Unity Annual Conference incorporate as a nondenominational, nonsectarian, religious organization, affiliated with Unity School of Christianity, for the purpose of clarifying our position in the field of religion and also for the purpose of receiving such recognition from the government as is accorded other religious organizations."

The president appointed a committee with power to carry out this resolution. The committee was also empowered to decide upon an appropriate name for the incorporating body.

36

Credit in Training School lor Study in Centers

Unity School announced a plan whereby students satisfactorily completing the study of LESSONS IN TRUTH or CHRISTIAN HEALING in Unity centers conducted by Unity Annual Conference members or licensed ministers may, upon the leader's recommendation, receive credit in the Unity Training School for the completed course.

LESSONS IN TRUTH will be the subject of study in 1945, and in the fall of 1946 both LESSONS IN TRUTH and CHRISTIAN HEALING. The leaders expressed the desire to start the course the same week in all centers, all following the same plan of study so that students moving from one city to another may continue the course and receive credit. The date for starting the course in LESSONS IN TRUTH in 1945 is the week of October 1.

For students to receive credit for the course in LESSONS IN TRUTH in the Unity Training School, it is necessary for the center to adhere to the following plan, which was adopted by the Unity Annual Conference:

The center is required to present a minimum of twenty-four lessons in LESSONS IN TRUTH.

Students are required to write out answers to ten questions on each chapter.

Perfect attendance is required. (The leader is to request perfect attendance. If an absence is unavoidable, this is to be left to the discretion of the leader and perhaps additional work required.)

The enrollment record is to be sent to Unity School at the time of registration.

Upon completion of the textbook the leader is to send the student's final lesson to Unity School, together with his attendance record, grades, and the leader's recommendation for credit. Final decision re-

37

garding credit is to b e left to Unity School. Under this plan a student receiving credit

may, when attending the Training School, devote his time to three subjects. If he chooses, he may take a fourth subject that he has not covered in a center.

Uniform Course of Study

The uniform course of study adopted by the Conference as a standard course of study in Unity centers remains as follows:

Class in Lessons in Truth Class in Talks on Truth or Christian Healing

. Course in Bible interpretation (to include Mysteries of Genesis)

The Silence to be studied each year This course of study is arranged for indi

vidual soul growth and development and not for the training of teachers. The services and classes in Unity centers are designed to appeal to the student mind. People today are realizing how much it means to develop the mind toward spiritual understanding, and' it is the purpose of the centers to give the individual an opportunity for education in the things of the Spirit.

Those desiring to serve as teachers should get in touch with Unity School direct, study the Unity Correspondence School Course, and attend the Training School.

Suggestions for Conference Board

Persons who offer definite suggestions for the attention of the Conference Board may be invited at its discretion to sit in Board meetings while the suggestions are being discussed.

Important Records

It is important that Unity centers keep a record of all public services in the center. A permanent record should be kept of all mar-

38

riages, infant christenings, and spiritual baptisms of children and adults, and if a center is disbanded the records should be sent to the Field Department.

Licensed Ministers and Licensed Teachers

At the 1941 Conference it was decided that teachers be designated as licensed teachers or as licensed ministers according to the kind of work they are doing. The leader of a center should be designated as a licensed minister and the teacher serving in connection with it or conducting classwork as a licensed teacher.

Listing of Leaders with Mailing Address

The listing in the UNITY magazine directory will omit the names of those with a mailing address only. The directory is to list only the addresses of Unity centers and classes. The purpose of the directory is to inform the public where they may receive a teaching and healing ministry. Therefore all Conference members and licensed ministers and teachers with a mailing address only will be listed in the Unity Annual Conference Yearbook but not in the UNITY directory.

Delegates

In order that the Credentials Committee may more efficiently register delegates attending the Conference, delegate application blanks in duplicate are to b e sent to each Conference member and licensed minister in charge of a center at the time the leader's membership application blank is mailed. The original delegate blank is to be returned to Lowell Fillmore, secretary of the Unity Annual Conference. The delegate will be required to present the duplicate blank at the time of registration in order to secure his delegate badge.

39

Each Conference member and licensed minister in charge of a center ministry may send to the Conference one delegate, who will have the privilege of sitting in on all business meetings.

Dispensation from Field Department

The clause "teacher working under dispensation from the Field Department," inserted in Article 6 of the Bylaws, was made to protect a center that is left temporarily without a leader but that continues to cooperate with the Field Department until another leader can be supplied. The center in this way works temporarily "under dispensation from the Field Department" and continues as an authorized center.

Unity Speakers on Other Platforms

If a Unity leader has in mind speaking in a non-Unity center in a city where there is an authorized Unity work, he is to notify the Unity leader in that city so the leader may have the first opportunity of extending a speaking invitation. If he does not, and the visiting leader arranges an engagement with the non-Unity center, it is the courteous plan for him to inform the local Unity leader of the engagement beforehand. Also, a speaker in a non-Unity center should not be advertised publicly as a Unity leader. A Unity leader should always exercise good judgment in accepting such an engagement, making sure that the teaching of the center is in harmony with the Unity teaching, and he should make his intention known to the Field Department beforehand.

Voting Privileges

While only members of the Unity Annual Conference present at the Conference meet-

40

ings have the privilege of voting, licensed ministers and teachers are invited to attend all business meetings. They may also present questions and suggestions to the Board in writing.

Past Presidents

In 1937 the motion carried that all past presidents of the Conference be made honorary members of the Board, to serve as silent helpers without the privilege of vote or discussion. As a result of this motion it was also decided that all past presidents should be made members of the Devotional Committee to serve from year to year. Those who have served as president of the Conference are Frederick E. Andrews, 1933; Louise C. Newman, 1934; Rex Morgan, 1935; Jessie G. Maloney, 1936; Louis E. Meyer, 1937; Georgi-ana Tree West, 1938; Irwin E. Gregg, 1939; Laura Hyer, 1940; E. Roy Feldt, 1941; Ida M. Palmer, 1942; Earl B. Anthony, 1943; Rose Emery, 1944; and Herbert J. Hunt, 1945.

Unity Training School Building Fund

The Unity Training School Building Fund, inaugurated by the Conference in 1937, is for the purpose of erecting a new hotel or any other building the Unity Farm management deems advisable in order to provide greater accommodations for those coming to the Conference and Training School each year. The use of this fund is under the control of the Conference body and must be determined by the Conference.

Membership

A member's standing in the Conference body from year to year depends upon his conscientiously adhering to the standard adopted. Therefore it behooves each leader to keep the Constitution, Bylaws, and Code of

41

Ethics clearly in mind. The suggestion has been made that each leader read this document through carefully the first of every month, becoming thoroughly familiar with the principle and the steps necessary for carrying it out in relation to our ministry.

Attendance at the Unity Annual Conference each year is stimulating to the leader, giving him greater strength and vision for the work. Regular attendance on the part of each leader unifies the Unity work as a whole and establishes it on a basis of growing unity, love, and understanding.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR LEADERSHIP The required course of study for Unity lead

ership, as adopted and ratified by the Unity Annual Conference July 1, 1936, is as follows:

Completion of the Correspondence School Course

Completion of the Methods and Ideals Course

Two terms attendance at the Unity Training School (over a period of two years; eight credits for written work)

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ORDINATION Before a student is eligible for ordination, it

is necessary lor him or her, in addition to fulfilling the above requirements, to have carried on for at least one year a center ministry that satisfies the Ordination Committee that the candidate's teaching and ethics are of the Christ standard.

These requirements are merely prerequisites, and their completion does not necessarily mean that one will be ordained. The distinction of ordination is conferred by invitation upon those who have proved their worthiness by their training and by the character of their work in the field. There are many factors to consider, and the matter is left to the discretion of the Ordination Committee, which consists of nine members and executives of Unity School.
