You’re surrounded by poets and you
don’t even know it!
The following poems were written by people within the school so enjoy them. If you feel like writing a poem and
you’d like it to be featured within this newsletter just give a copy to Mrs Emery!
Cat Creeper, It was a dark and stormy night. The leaves were like washing, flapping in the wind. Through the trees galloped a fearsome creature. His eyes were as red as rubies, His fur as white as snow, But it was encrusted with slime And reeked of mouldy cheese, Its teeth were dripping with blood And it's lower splattered with mud. His ears were sharp and pointed, They reached up to the sky And his steely glare fixed upon the creature approaching... Catriona Davies 8D2
Regrets
Faces like a halo of light surround me.
Some a little blurred now,
these old tired eyes cannot see the features
of the ones I know, ought to know
and never to be known.
Voices mumble in sincerity ‘not long now’
‘oh if only we could have done something’
The true meaning is lost to me, like waves crashing on
some far away shore.
Memories flood like the incoming tide
bringing tears to my eyes,
they flow as salted streams down my face
catching in the wrinkles.
A warm hand smooths my cold one,
such a simple gesture, a quiet reassurance.
‘Don’t be afraid’
Clinging onto life becomes a burden, a heavy weight
forcing precious breath from my lungs.
‘Don’t be afraid’
But I was so afraid to leave behind unfinished
business; words left unspoken quivered on my lips.
Opportunities left open, unfulfilled.
‘Do not be afraid Grandma’
How could I not be?
Death was yet to solve these regrets.
Here’s an idea! Have a go at some found
poetry, this is where you get a book page
and highlight certain words and try to
make it sound like a poem. Give it a go!
Ask first though!!!
I’ve read every book in this line up and let me tell you they are all heartbreakingly romantic and I recommend them all.
My all-time favourite though is Eleanor and Park it tells a story of unconditional love without the need for perfection.
Rainbow Rowel’s style of writing helps to clearly convey the feelings between the two main characters and the easy
almost diary feel of the book makes it easy to read and enjoy.
Book, be my Valentine…
Try out some of these romance books this Valentine’s Day ~
I tried to include some lesser known titles here such as ‘Finding Sky’ I find this book a good read with a light
hearted romance and your almost typical romance characters, but don’t let this put you off because the storyline is
well written and the whole series is links well. I found a certain amount of satisfaction when the characters
appeared in later book and helped each other.
A personal favourite of mine is the Mortal Instrument series. I really enjoyed the character development inside this
book and the gradual building of tension and conflict makes the finale and betrayal inside this book even more
thrilling.
First impression:
Well I see a tattooed hand saying something about a cold girl… anyone else
confused? The cover looks a bit boring just black and blue. It’s not really screaming
READ ME!!!
We shall see...
After reading:
I found that this book had an interesting plot with a wide variety of original
characters that lacked cliché. Yes this book is about vampires but don’t let that put
you off. The introduction of an anti-hero type main character is an interesting
twist to a love story. I think this would be a good book to read if you are looking
for more than just a conventional love story.
First impression:
A red shrivelled leaf, it’s simple but not really that effective. I guess
it links to the forest idea. It doesn’t look that bad but it doesn’t
look amazing…
After reading:
Amazing, totally unexpected! This book is about an oppressed
dystopian human society which exists after the zombie apocalypse.
Personally I love this book as it offers a good mix of all genres. I find
this is a rather mature approach to a dystopian society and may
not be to the taste of all, but have a go and read it!
First impression:
I don’t know about you but I find the combination of the
background image and the name rather off putting. I know Malorie
Blackman is an amazing author but…
After reading:
The depth of emotion portrayed by Cameron (the MC) is amazing
and you really become to understand and sympathise with him. It’s
a very emotional book with lots of unexpected twists and turns
that kept me engrossed until the end. It also tackles an interesting
issue that has yet to be addressed in other books I have read.
This is exactly what readers like me face every day when picking up a book. To be fair most of the time I
judge the book by the cover, which isn’t always the best way to pick a book. One of the only ways I
discover new books that I probably wouldn’t have even considered reading is by the help of
recommendations…
To read or not to read?
Patron Reading
Every year King Edwards gets a new Patron of reading,
meaning that the school has the opportunity to form a
special bond with a published author. Which if you ask
me it is a pretty snazzy opportunity! This means that the
patron will be responsible for encouraging a reading for
pleasure culture within our school.
Laura Wood is an ex-King Edwards’s student who is now an award
winning author (winner of the prestigious Montegrappa Scholastic prize
for new children’s writing). She has recently completed her PHD in
English Literature and now teaches nineteenth century literature,
feminism and children's literature. The second book in her award winning
‘Poppy Pym’ books will be published in 2016 so make sure you look out
for it!
I am yet to read the Poppy Pym books but judging from the copious amounts of raving reviews I’d say that it’s
definitely be worth a read for you younger people out there. The characters seem lively and exciting and at times
and truly relatable. The fact that Poppy Pym was bought up in a circus environment just makes her antics seem
even more extraordinary! It is the perfect book to read if you are worried about going somewhere new, as
Poppy Pym overcomes these barriers and makes awesome new friends.

OH MY GOSH!
Another year is coming
which means…
No not another year in
school.
Nope not another year of
failed fitness
aspirations…
YES!!! BOOKS!!!
All these new releases
make me want to grab
‘em all and pull an all-
nighter. Definitely
excited about the ‘I am
number four’ finale.
Looks like we have some
new authors’ in the
scene rather than just
our old favourites. How
exciting! I like the look of
glass sword and the
overview sounds really
thrilling: love, betrayal
and mystery.
Relic looks intriguing as a
new horror novel
although not my usual
genre it may be worth a
read. Apparently it’s
perfect for fans of
Stephen King.

NEW ARRIVALS!
new
Library NEWSLETTER!!
! So this is your great, amazingly fabulous
and absolutely captivating new library
newsletter all about everything that’s
going on in the library and the literary
community!
The aim of this newsletter is to provide
information about the world of books.
But first let’s be honest, picking up and
reading this isn’t exactly going to add to
your street credit. In fact reading books
may seem unimportant and slightly
useless, I mean who needs to know
how to defeat an orc or how to survive
the hunger games! Just because the
stories in books aren’t real (although I
am sure I have seen a real enchantress
) doesn’t mean you shouldn’t read
them. For me I believe they teach you
valuable lessons that can be applied in
real life situations.
For example the all-time and probably
most borrowed book in the library
‘The Fault in our Stars’ not only
portrays an epic and beautifully tragic
love story but it helps you to
understand to be happy with your
place in this world and that love is
defiantly out there if you are willing to
go for the risk. For messages like that
to be shown in a mere 313 pages, I
believe books are worth reading.
But hey, don’t take my word for it. I
encourage you to go pick a book that
you think you’ll enjoy and give it a
try. You don’t have to start off with
the next up and coming novel.
Maybe just a comic book or
something off the quick reads
spinner. But I promise you once
you’re hooked with reading.
You’ll never look back.
Dangerous Lies by Becca Fitzpatrick
