Laws of Chanukah1. This year, Chanukah 5780 corresponds to the secular dates of Sunday night, December 22nd, 2019 through Monday, December 30th, 2019.
2. WEEKDAY CANDLE LIGHTING: Candles are to be lit after 5:10pm on weekday nights.
3. FRIDAY CANDLE LIGHTING: On Friday night, December 27th, Chanukah candles are lit prior to Shabbos candles. Candles should burn at least one half hour after nightfall. Hence, on Friday night, one should use at least one large wax candle or an additional amount of oil for the first Chanukah candle lit for that night.
4. SATURDAY NIGHT CANDLE LIGHTING: Saturday night, December 28th - Some say Havdalah first and then light candles; some light candles and then say Havdalah. Either custom is valid. If your custom is to light Chanukah candles prior to Havdalah, make certain you say either “atah chonantanu” in Shemoneh Esrei or “Baruch hamavdil bein kodesh l’chol” before lighting the candles. 5. Candles should be lit on the window sill facing the street.
6. On weekdays, if candles blow out before one half hour passed, they are to be rekindled without repeating the blessings.
7. On the first night of Chanukah, one recites the blessings of “l’hadlik ner shel chanukah”, “she’asah nissim” and “shehecheyanu”. On all other nights, “shehecheyanu” is omitted. 8. Before the blessings, the Menorah is prepared by inserting the candles from right to left as you face the Menorah. 9. After the blessings, one lights the candles from left to right as you face the Menorah. 10. After lighting the first candle, one says “Haneros Halalu” while lighting the other candles. “Haneros Halalu” is followed by “Ma’oz Tzur”. 11. Shacharis services include Al Hanisim, Hallel Shalem and Krias HaTorah. We omit Tachanun and Lamnatzeach. We say Mizmor Shir Chanukas Habayis at the end of services. If one omits “Al Hanisim” from Shemoneh Esreh or Birkas Hamazon and completes the blessing which follows it, no repetition is necessary.
