Offensive Line Fundamentals

1. STANCE

It all starts with a good balanced stance.

2. STARTS

Once the OL is in a good stance he must be able to fire out andexecute his block.

3. PROPER STEPS

OL is a very technical position, so taking the correct steps is thekey to making the block. One wrong step and you could be beat!

 No False Steps

4. HAND PLACEMENT

Along with taking the proper steps, hand placement is critical toexecuting the various blocks an OL must make during a game.

K ey to Good Stance

1. Feet Shoulder Width Apart (Wide Base)

2. Flat Footed (Little to no heel raise)

3. Weight Evenly Distributed between 3 points

( 2 feet & down hand)

4. Toe to Inseam Stagger 

5. Toes & Shoulders Square to LOS

6. Flat Back w/ Butt up

BC Offensive Line Warm-up

The following drill is done as a warm-up everyday

at practice and before games. Time is precious so even

our warm-up drills must translate to what we do on

Friday night!

Drive Block 

This is a one on one block. You are trying to

knock the DL backwards. Take short jab

step outside defenders body w/ play side

foot. Second step should be to crotch of defender. The hands should hit at the same

time as second step. Aiming point is inside

numbers. You want to get you hands on his

chest/ breast. The key is to come off low

and hard. You must keep feet moving at all

times.

Down Block 

Step with your inside foot. You want to get

your head across the defender¶s body and

stop his penetration first. Your and should

hit at same time as second step. Continuedriving the defender on an angle. This block 

is usually used when a back side OL is

 pulling to the front side of a play.

Reach Block 

This block is used on sweeps and outside

running plays. Step w/ play side foot,

aiming for the outside number of the

defensive lineman. Continue working hipsaround. Once you have reached DL push

him to inside away from the play.

Double Team/ Combo Block 

This block requires OL to work together.

Both OL must come off the ball low and

hard, so that the DL can not split their 

 block. Both OL should step with inside foot.Their hip and feet should touch. OL should

continue keep feet moving at all times. Two

OL must be able to beat one DL!

Pull/ Trap Block 

This block is used on a number of plays

(Sweeps, Traps, Power, Counter, etc.)

depending on your offense. We pull and trap

a lot at BCHS. The key is to take a drop or  bucked step (to open hips) then attack into

the LOS. It is important that the OL does

not pull too flat or wide. We tell our OL that

they should be making contact/ in hole on

third step for short pull and four step for a

longer pull. We want our head in between

the defender and the ball carrier.

Veer/ LB (Inside Release) Block 

This block is used on option and trap plays.

This block is key to our success at BCHS.

The OL must step with his inside foot, dip

his outside shoulder, and rip underneath the

DL. A good DL will try to squeeze us and

make the hole smaller for the running back.

We can not get pushed off course. We must

get to the LB we are assigned to block!

Scoop Block 

This block is used on the backside of plays.

We want to step with the play side foot and

 block and defender inside of us. If this is a

DL we will cut block him. If no one is inour play side gap we will continue to the LB

or Safety.
