Pastor Truscott
Welcome to Fall!
All of a sudden it's September and the fall season is upon us!!
Yes! Sunday School is beginning with Rally Day on September 11th and Adult Bible Studyis beginning on September 18th.
I know this is the September Beacon and November is a couple of months away, but weare already looking ahead. In November, we open our doors and hearts to the community with“Dinners From Around The World”. Preparations have already begun and tickets are alreadyon sale now.
In November, there is another event that we, as a nation, are already preparing for.November is when we have the privilege of voting on Election Day. Truthfully, there are othertimes to vote throughout the year, but this Election Day draws our attention because of theopportunity to elect a President.
As a church, according to IRS guidelines, we do not endorse candidates or participate inany political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate. However, we are calledto participate in the electoral process and speak to elected officials about our concerns.
ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton stated, “This church understands government as ameans through which God works to preserve creation and build a more peaceful and justsocial order in a broken world. Christians are called to be stewards of our common lifethrough serving as faithful and active citizens.”
Voting and being a part of the political process is a way of living out our baptismal promisesto “serve all people, following the example of our Lord Jesus” and “to strive for justice andpeace in all the earth.”
The ELCA has launched an initiative to encourage all of us to be involved, “ELCAvotes”. Itcomes from a 2013 Churchwide Assembly resolution concerning “Voting Rights to AllCitizens”. Our New Jersey faith-based advocacy network, Lutheran Episcopal AdvocacyMinistry, has distributed a New Jersey voting resource guide that I personally found helpful.Copies will be made available.
Your voice counts and your participation matters for the sake of the world and thecommunity around us!
“God of righteousness, you stand in power over all authorities, and you rule over allgovernments. Let the peoples of the earth rejoice and the leaders of nations follow the way ofthe Prince of peace, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. (ELW Prayer 492)

An article in the September issue oflists what the writer callsHe believes that there are
five reasons people might give to thechurch. They are Fear, Guilt, Insurance,Good Will, and Loyalty.
The fearful, he thinks, give because theybelieve God will be displeased if they don'tgive to the church. Some may give out ofguilt if they don't give. Some may give likethey pay for insurance. They feel they mayneed the church for a wedding or funeral orcounseling with the pastor or whatever. Some may give as a matter of good will. They consider that they want a church intheir community and therefore they will givesomething to show their good will. Thensome give as a matter of loyalty so theygive something to pay their dues. Obviouslythe author thinks that those who give toGod's church out of fear, guilt, insurance, good will or loyalty give for the wrongreason.
Therefore he suggests four betterreasons for giving of our tithes andofferings. First, there is thanksgiving. If weare truly grateful for all the blessings Godshowers upon us, we will want to givegenerously to God's church so that it cancarry out its mission on earth. Second, weshould give out of love for God. Sincerelove for the Lord compels us to give toGod's church and the spread of theKingdom of God. Thirdly, out of gratitude forthe showers of blessing from the Lord, wewant to share more than our money. We willwant to offer our talent and time. Fourthly,we will develop a sense of stewardshipbecause we are God's children and we willwant to please our loving Creator every day
we live on earth.Holy and loving Father, help us to
have the will and the way to work for yourKingdom on earth as it is in Heaven.
