The third specimen was not located. There are two females from Gordonvale missing heads and it is impossible to associate Slide 2 with any one of these. The word crossed outon the underside of the Card 2 label afterEupelmus appears to be agromyzae[CHEIRONYM]. I suspect that these maybe specimens of Eupelmus sp. described byDodd (1917: 356) from Agromyza phaseoliwhich are in turn mentioned by Girault atthe end of his description of Eupelmusgray! brevicinctus (1939: 19). I think thatGirault has crossed out the words on thislabel, turned it upside down and placed"gray! Gir." on it. When looking forDodd's specimens he possibly forgot thesedetails which would explain why he couldnot locate them in 1939. See also NOTESwith GRA YI BREVICINCTUS EUPELMUS.

It does notoccur in Girault's unpublished manuscriptand since the Syntypes bear two Giraultlabels with both names I suspect thatGirault initially intended to use the spellinggrotiusi, but later changed it to grotii.

Withoutlabel data on the specimens it is impossibleto determine which is his Holotype and Ihave therefore given them Syntype status. It is also impossible to determine the originof the parts on Slide 1. The Syntypes arebadly mounted and it is difficult to see thelegs. For this reason I have stated that theparts are from the Syntypes.

The wings came fromthe Holotype, i.e. if Girault had only 2specimens (the specimen on Card 2 hasboth fore wings present). "TYPE,Hy/3165, A.A. Girault", "QueenslandMuseum. "TYPE","Systasis grotiusi 9 [GF1]".NOTES: Girault did not specify which ofthe two collection dates refer to theHolotype. The specimen on Card 2 may bethe Paratype since Girault gives two datesof collection. However, this remainsuncertain in the absence of data on thespecimen and Girault has not annotated thelabels with Card 2 and the slide "TYPE".The "TYPE" labels were placed with thespecimens on Card 2 and the Slide byHacker. However, Mrs Girault's label onthe Slide is glued over a Girault label whichcan be read with a mirror "Systasis grotiusiGir., 9 type". As mentioned above theparts on the slide have come from twospecimens. Girault's unpublishedmanuscript does not shed any light on thesedetails.

The male on Stage3 has only part of 1 antenna missingwhereas all antennae on the slide are intact.Another factor which helps confirm this isthat only specimens on Stages 1 and 2 arefungus affected. In Girault's unpublishedmanuscript he mentions, "Type localityand host, March 6, 1919, F.P. Dodd, manyfemales". These are the specimens on

PUBL. DATA: From trunk dead brigalow,Vernor, September 5, 1924. In hisunpublished manuscript Girault says, "Thetype was one female."

QM: 3 cards and 2 slides as follows:Card 1 - 2 9 metasomas associated withsome legs (both insect damaged), 1 d minusright antenna and some legs; metasoma andhind legs separated. Only 1 of these 9 9 isthe Holotype, see NOTES below. "4199","Eupelmus hirsutioculus Gir., Types 4[GM".Slide 1 - a half coverslip with an adjoinedcoverslip fragment (these are closest to thelabels) containing 2 2 antennae, 1 dantenna and 1 leg all from the specimenson Card 1; an outer, half coverslipcontaining 1 intact Syntype 2 ofOmphalodipara splendida Girault."Eupelmus hirsutioculus Gir., Type d[GH] 4199". This label has arrows directedat the relevant pieces of coverslip."Omphalodipara genotype 9 [=splendida(outer). Montville, Q., Sep. [GM".Card 2 - 1 9 minus right antenna and leftfore wing. "Chinchilla, Queensland, A.P.Dodd", "Calosota [= Eupelmushirsutioculus Girault, 9 [GM".Card 3 - 1 9 minus right antenna and rightwings; the labels are as Card 2.Slide 2 - 1 complete coverslip containing 2antennae and 2 fore wings all from thespecimens on Cards 2 and 3. "Calosota [=Eupelmus ] hirsutioculus Gir., ParatypeChinchilla, Q. [OH] 4199".NOTES: The specimens on Cards 2 and 3have no type-status since their data werenot mentioned with the description. It isdifficult to know what to do with the chaosGirault has created with his type materialof this species. In his original publicationhe describes the ovipositor indicating thathe was dealing with the female sex, but hisPUBL. DATA do not give the number ofspecimens involved. In his unpublishedmanuscript he states that the type was asingle female but his label says "Types 4"with the card bearing two females and onemale. His label on Slide 1 says "Type d 9".His unpublished manuscript gives adescription of the male which fits the maleon Card 1 and its antenna on Slide I. Afterthe description he states, "Male is supposedsame species only". I do not regard themale on Card 1 as having any type-status.When mentioning the extra material fromChinchilla in his unpublished manuscriptGirault says, "Two females, Chinchilla,A.P. Dodd. The valves of the ovipositor in

these specimens were entirely black (in thetype the white apex is dull and perhaps thewhite fades out after death)". Examinationof the remains of the two females on Card1 shows that the outer specimen hasuniform black ovipositor valves whereas inthe inner female the tip was once pale. Iam taking the latter as the remains of theHolotype of this species. The outer femalemay have been a different species but thisis now impossible to tell. If this is so thenGirault's "Types ?" on his label with Card1 is a lapsus. In his unpublished manuscript Giraultplaces this species in the genus Calosota, hence the labels on Cards 2 and 3, andSlide 2. The Queensland Museum registernumber for the Holotype of this species isT.4199.

Heappears to have been rather vague aboutthe word type and occasionally used it tocover more than one specimen; additionalspecimens in some cases were then labelledcotypes and paratypes. I have noreservations about labelling the three card-mounted specimens as Syntypes for whichthe Queensland Museum register number isT.5090. The head on the slide is that of afemale and the leg probably from the male.
