THE WAVES at PORTO CIMA

The Waves is a large resort at the Lake of the Ozarks, MO that provides luxurious amenities for it's guests. The Waves was a Senior Thesis group project that consisted

of myself, and three other students. The project includes: units for guests to stay in, a lobby for guests and employees, a spa for guests to relax in, and a restaurant for guests and also the general public to have drinks and food while enjoying

a good view.

SITE ANALYSIS

The Lake of the Ozarks is located centrally in Missouri. It is very long and snake like with coves branching off the main channel in every

direction. Our site is an island on mile marker 13 that is connected to Porto Cima by a tiny land bridge. The north side of the island faces the exciting main channel. As you can see on our site model on the

upper right, the island has a sloping typography which allows for many different views of the lake. Each layer represents a 1'-0" elevation

change making the highest point 35' above the water.

RESTAURANT

LOBBY/EVENT

SPA

We arranged the buildings on the island to go from public to private. The restaurant is located first, facing the main channel

because it is available to guest as well as the general public. Next is the lobby and event center. This is located at the center of the island with a viewing tower. The viewing tower acts as an implied centralized lighthouse to draw people into the island. Across from

the lobby is the resort's spa. We cut into the typography and lowered it to make it more secluded and private. The spa faces

the south towards the back of the cove to make it more peaceful and to allow the view of the sunset.

The most private buildings on the island are last, the units. The units wrap around the far end of the island providing a range of views. There are two different units available, 2 person units and 4 person units. There are 15, 2 person units and they are located on the edge of the island closer to the water. There are 9, 4 person units and they are located behind and above the 2 person units.

This project is meant to take place in a down-town building that is flanked on both sides by other buildings. The lower level is occupied by a small design office and the upper level is a residential loft that has it's own seperate en-trance. The main design concepts that drove

this project was linear, orthogonal, and open/collaborative.

In the section and colored diagram floorplans it is easy to see the design concepts implemented. In

section you can clearly see the linear and orthogonal elements. In the floor plans you can see the open and collaborative concept to create a stimulating

workplace and large home environment.

The purpose of this project was to create a custom design for an Airstream trailer for a very specific client that will use the trailer primarily for their job. The design of this Airstream

trailer is arranged to give the users a strong sense of a defined space. The trailer is designed to accomodate a couple, in this case two exploration geologists, that would be living in the trailer for weeks or even months at a time in a secluded

area.

BUILDING TYPES:-Airstream Trailer

Being confined around one person for long periods of time can be hard and sometimes you just need to seperate and get some space from one another. However, with a trailer, getting space from one another can be difficult. With the use of geometric forms and sliding doors this trailer gives the users the control of defined spaces. They can choose to have the doors open allowing for interaction between one another, or they could choose to close the doors giving, them the seperation and privacy they sometimes desire. I seperated work from the living area so that if one person chooses, they can work in peace in quiet and not be distrubed by the other who may be cooking or enjoying the living area.

The goal of this project was to create a 3-Dimensional replica of the Esherick House. To achieve this, intensive

reseach had to be done to understand the space by using the sections, elevations, and floorplans. As an

interior design student, it is fundamental to study past design and what made them successful. This project focuses on Design Communication and understanding

how the design of the Esherick House works.

BUILDING TYPES:-Residential House

The Esherick House, located in Philadelpia, is one of Louis Kahn's most famous houses. This house strongly emphasizes spa-tial organization and structure. It also has a very unique window and shutter configuration. This allowed for a lot of natural light to enter the house. The above image is a photo of the real Esherick House.

Page 36: Amy Boschert Interior Design Portfolio

The image above is the front facade of the Esherick House. The below image shows the back facade.

As you can see there is wide variety of window sizes which helps Kahn create his unique spaces with different light-

ing options while emphasizing on the structure of the building.

EXTERIOR

Page 37: Amy Boschert Interior Design Portfolio

Wood is used throughout the house as a structural and design feature. One of the main aspects of the Esherick House is the custom book case that is located on the front side of the house in a large open living room as you can see in the rendering above.
