An Act of Kindness

T he miracle of today’s Gospel was an act of kindness and loving thoughtfulness on the part of Jesus. He saw

the people’s need - it was late for them to return to their homes and they had had nothing to eat all day,

and he worked a miracle to meet this need. The miracle also helped to convince the people of Galilee, the news

spread around quickly, that he was the expected Messiah, but especially it prepared the way for the announce-

ment of the greatest miracle of all - the miracle of the Eucharist.

The bread he miraculously multiplied that day to supply the bodily needs of the Galilean multitude was but a

foreshadowing of that heavenly food which he was about to give as spiritual nourishment to the millions who

would become his followers, down through the centuries until the end of time. The Galileans were grateful to

him for providing so kindly and so thoughtfully for their needs. How much more grateful should we not be for

the miracle by means of which he has left us himself to be our daily spiritual food? We are grateful, of course, to

our loving Lord who not only handed over himself to his enemies to be crucified for us, but through his divine

power, triumphant over death, should remain with us, his Church, forever under the Eucharistic species.

Someone Special

I n the days of Jesus, the people of Galilee came to realise that there was someone

special in their midst. A young man had appeared who, it seemed, had special

powers of healing, and who spoke in ways that captivated his listeners. This was

someone who just had to be seen, and someone that people wanted to listen to. And so

the crowds began to gather. The people knew that they were on to a good thing. This

man can cure our sicknesses. This man seems to understand life, and has an air of au-

thority about him that persuades you that he is the genuine article: not a showman, but

a Saviour.

Jesus himself knew all about the problems of being in the public eye. Your words and

your actions will be scrutinised. You will be misreported and misrepresented. Your

enemies will seek to destroy you in whatever way they can. King Herod Antipas, a

vicious ruler, had just executed John the Baptist, and so Jesus could very well be next in

line. He leaves Herod’s territory and moves along the coast, hoping for some quiet time

to compose himself. But his boat is not far from shore, so the crowds can see where he

is making for. When he steps ashore, the crowds are waiting for him.

Now Jesus will show us what true power is, and how it should be exercised. These

people need their sicknesses to be healed - Jesus tends to them. They need guidance -

Jesus preaches the word of life to them. They are hungry and need food - so Jesus feeds

them, and teaches his disciples to feed them from the little that they have. The issues of

health, education and welfare are all addressed here. These are common needs in all of

humankind, and we are called to attend to them all, in every person.

When St Paul gave up his life of violence, in which he sought to bring the world to

order according to his own narrow view, he embraced the love of Jesus Christ. Paul,

blinded on the Damascus road, now sees the world in a new way. Caught up in the

love of the risen Lord, Paul opens his heart to the whole world.

Not for Paul any more, the narrow sectarian attitudes of his past. Now, Paul will be “all

things to all people,” if he may win them to Christ Jesus. The power and might that

carry such weight in this world, the reliance on force to solve problems, all this is gone.

Paul has met with the risen Lord, who overcame death, and tells us that now there is

no reason for us to be afraid. Paul encourages us that, whatever trials we endure, we

shall triumph in the end. This is our way of life, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Be There for Me

D arcy is a Catholic kid in Year 5 at a public school. She and her friends are looking

forward to their catechist returning to teach them about Jesus and his Church.

While over 900 catechists are heading back to this wonderful work in our diocese, some

are not able to return at this time. So, can you be there for them as a relief catechist?

Already there has been a positive response to the call for relief catechists. Some people

have returned to the ministry after taking a break for a few years. Others are coming

into the ministry because changed circumstances mean they have time. These relief

catechists are doing Safeguarding training and will be offered a special introduction to

managing classes with good lesson preparation.

Our parish covers four public primary schools: The Entrance, Bateau Bay, Brooke

Avenue and Killarney Vale - all close by. Our catechists and helpers visit the schools on

a Thursday during school terms. Just call our parish office on 4332 2216 or the Diocesan

CCD Office on 8379 1638 and offer be a relief Catechist or Helper.

Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop

will be celebrated on Saturday 8 August at 9am Mass.

Nursing Home Mass

Mass and Anointing of the Sick will be

celebrated at Killarney Court Nursing Home Killarney Vale

on Monday 3 August at 11am.

We Appreciate Your Help

W e still need some help with the following:

Someone has volunteered to take the parish bus for servicing etc but we

still need a volunteer to coordinate the driver’s rostering.

Sadly four of our dedicated Catechists have had to resign leaving us in need of

replacements and helpers.

With a major loss of our rental income from the Carnival Hall shops we are more

dependent than ever on your generosity to keep the parish afloat. As Mother

Angelica would say: “Keep us between your gas bill and your electricity bill.”

Feel free to call us at the office to discuss any options 4332 2216.

Vocations Awareness Week

N ational Vocations Awareness Week – This is a week for the entire Church to

consider, support and pray for those searching for their vocations in life. We

might think about and pray for the young people in our community and in our families

this week especially. In prayer, ask the Lord to enlighten them and give them the grace

and courage to respond to his call. The Lord calls each of us to a particular vocation

(marriage, consecrated life, priesthood or a single life of service). For more information

contact the Vocations Office: [email protected] or 0418 522 449.
