AN AMAZING LIFE

HELEN KELLER’S STORY

Helen Keller was a very important

person.

She was born in 1880 in Alabama,

in the USA. When she was a baby,

she had a high fever for several days.

After her illness, Helen was deaf and

blind.

She was often angry and frustrated.

She realized that she was different

and it was difficult to let people

know what she needed.

As Helen needed some special

help. she had a special teacher

called Anne Sullivan who was her

helper for 50 years. Anne began

to teach Helen words. She pressed

the letters of words into Helen's

hand. For example, she put a doll

in one of Helen's hands and then

pressed the letters of the word

D-O-L-L into the other hand.

Helen repeated the words into

Annie’s hand but she didn't

understand anything. One day,

Annie put Helen's hand into

water coming from a

fountain. Then she pressed

“water” into Helen's other

hand. Something clicked.

Helen finally understood what

Annie was doing.

She was an intelligent girl and soon

Helen could read books in Braille, a

special reading system for blind

people with Anne’s help. Her

favourite subject at school was

English Literature.
