April Virtue of the Month –Justice

Justice means that we deal fairly with others, recognizing the equality and dignity of all. It requires that we work to ensure that all people, especially the poor and the weak, have access to opportunities. It assumes that none of us is free until all of us are. One of the central tenants of Catholic social teaching is the dignity of the human being; we are all created in the image of God, and therein rests our inalienable dignity. Justice is extended to people, animals, the environment; the whole universe.

We can find Justice by:

Doing what is right

Treat others fairly

Think about how your actions will affect others

Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations

To support our faith development and Catholic Board Learning Cycle, we infuse our Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations in all aspects of Catholic Education from Kindergarten to Grade 12. As a school we work to support a deeper understanding of these expectations and of our witness to faith. To-gether, as a community we work to embed the seven expectations to support the Catholic Education of our students as they journey through our schools through to vocation.

A REFLECTIVE AND CREATIVE THINKER WHO: Recognizes there is more grace in our world than sin and that hope is essential in facing all challenges. Creates, adapts, and evaluates new ideas in light of the common good. Thinks reflectively and creatively to evaluate situations and solve problems. Makes decisions in light of gospel values with an informed moral conscience. Adopts a holistic approach to life by integrating learning from various subject areas and experience. Examines, evaluates and applies knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, socio-economic

and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society.

Graduation Photo Day

Please note that students in Senior Kindergaten and Grade 8 will have photos for graduation taken on April 9th.

Brush-A-Mania!

April is a very special month in Canada. It is Oral Health Month. School children all over the country from Junior Kindergarten to grade six are going to brush their teeth. Please encourage your child to brush his/her teeth.

Each school will have a dentist show the students how to brush their teeth the right way and to answer any questions. Your teachers, the Rotary Clubs and I all want to help you to encourage your children to take good care of their teeth.

At the school’s Brush-a-mania assembly, your child will receive a Brush-a-mania instruction pamphlet, a Colgate toothbrush and toothpaste and a special Brush-a-mania sticker. Log on to brushamania.ca every day to record your child’s brushes. After 30 days, every student who has brushed and/or flossed their teeth 100 times will be able to print out a Brush-a-mania certificate of achievement. His or her name will be entered into a draw to win an Xbox One or one of fifty tablets.

Try It At Home

Learning to use standard units of time takes practice and Look for situations involving proportional thinking in real life. Have your child explain his or her thinking. Some examples are provided here:

Mr. C.’s car lights are not working at full strength. They are dim-ming and losing 25% of their brightness. Should he drive at night? Why or Why not?

Gabriella promises to help her sister to do her paper route each day. Her sister says she’ll give her one quarter of her profits. Is this a good deal for Gabriella? Explain why.

Explain the meaning of this illustration. What decisions could a family make with this information?

Student Mental Health and Well-Being

.

It’s Spring! Time for Some

Fresh Air and Well-Being!

Many adults enjoy the serenity of spending time in nature as a way to escape the stress and craziness of everyday life. Not only can fresh air and natural scenery have a positive impact on adults, outdoor activities for children can also improve the overall quality of kids’ lives.

Dr. Susanne Preston, a Clinical Mental Health in-structor at South University, ( Virginia) says being outside and spending time in nature is good for a person’s mental health, as it allows them to de-stress.

Fresh air and sunlight exposure elevates mood and well-being. According to Dr. Preston, “Research has shown that spending time in nature has been asso-ciated with decreased levels of mental illness, with the strongest links to reduced symptoms of depres-sion and anxiety, in addition to increased self es-teem,” .

Activities don’t need to be elaborate, taking walks around the park or neighborhood, stretching, and meditation are healthy, relaxing ways to get some fresh air.

The July 2010 The Harvard Newsletter lists five good reasons to get outdoors and spend time in nature:

Your vitamin D levels rise. Sunlight hitting the skin begins a process that leads to the creation and acti-vation of vitamin D. Studies suggest that this vita-min helps fight certain conditions, from osteoporo-sis and cancer to depression and heart attacks. You’ll get more exercise. if you make getting out-side a goal, that should mean less time in front of the television and computer and more time walk-ing and doing other things that put the body in mo-tion. You may be happier. Light tends to elevate peo-ple’s mood, and there’s usually more light available outside than in. Physical activity has been shown to help people relax and cheer up, so if being outside replaces inactive pursuits with active ones, it might also mean more smiles. Your concentration may improve. Children with ADHD seem to focus better after being outdoors. It might be a stretch to say that applies to adults, but if you have trouble con-
