How to use this document

The South Australian Department of Human

Services (DHS) wrote this document. When you

see the word ‘we’, it means DHS.

We have written this information in an easy

to read way.

We use pictures to explain some ideas.

We have written some words in bold. We

explain what these words mean. There is

a list of these words on page 30.

This Easy Read document is a summary

of another document.

You can find the other document on our website

at www.dhs.sa.gov.au/disability

We want to make playgrounds better for everyone

Playing is important for all children.

It helps children to:

• learn how to talk to other children

• be more independent – able to do things

on their own

• be creative

• learn spatial awareness.

Page 5: An Easy Read survey for adults · Making playgrounds better for everyone An Easy Read survey for adults . Page 2 ... accessible. to everyone. If something is accessible, it means

Page 5

Spatial awareness is when you understand how

close your body is to other objects or people.

This can help stop you from bumping into things.

We want playgrounds to:

• help all children to play together

• be accessible to everyone.

If something is accessible, it means everyone

can use it.

Page 6: An Easy Read survey for adults · Making playgrounds better for everyone An Easy Read survey for adults . Page 2 ... accessible. to everyone. If something is accessible, it means

Page 6

Why are we doing this survey?

We are creating playground guidelines.

These guidelines are for local councils

and other organisations.

The guidelines will help them to:

• improve the playgrounds they

already have

• make sure that new playgrounds

are more accessible.

Page 7: An Easy Read survey for adults · Making playgrounds better for everyone An Easy Read survey for adults . Page 2 ... accessible. to everyone. If something is accessible, it means

Page 7

The guidelines will tell them how to plan what the

playgrounds should look like.

This will help make sure that everyone can:

• get to the playgrounds

• use the playgrounds.

The guidelines will also tell them about

play equipment that is inclusive.

Play equipment includes things like swings

and slides.

Inclusive means that everyone can take part.

This includes people with disability.

The guidelines will tell them what facilities they need.

Page 8: An Easy Read survey for adults · Making playgrounds better for everyone An Easy Read survey for adults . Page 2 ... accessible. to everyone. If something is accessible, it means

Page 8

Facilities include things like:

• toilets

• seats

• shaded areas.

We want to know about your experiences

of using playgrounds.

What you tell us will help us to work out what

should go in the guidelines.
