In building our 2018 budget we were able to cover our anticipated increased operating and payroll expenses, and fund our 26 minis- tries (within Good News, National/International and UP- CAP) at the same level as 2017, based on the 2018 pledges, non-pledge contributions, and historical plate offering revenue, thanks to your generosity. Our current lease with HTCC ends on Dec. 31, 2019. Working together, the ministry chairs and board liaison promulgated 32 Ministry descriptions, with lists of calendared tasks that each ministry per- forms in order to fulfill their duties. An additional 5 paid job descriptions were produced or revised (Administrative Assistant, Keyboardist, Handbell Direc- tor, Sound Technician, and Webmaster). The goal of this endeavor was to help with transitions of leadership when ministry chair and/or paid positions became open. It was a massive undertaking, but also helped to strengthen a relationship with the Board to the minis- tries and vice versa. We wanted to insure that both internal communica- tions with members (handled competently by Rob Pear- son and Jan Tuckerman through monthly newsletters, e- mails, bulletin announcements, etc.) and external com- munications (flyers, community outreach announce- ments, website, etc.) were current, substantive, and helpful. Appointed in September, new co-chairs for Ex- ternal Communications, Mark and Cindy McConnell, have gotten us off to a great start in our continued effort to become more visible in the community. Finally, as alluded to in prior paragraphs, the Board endeavored to re-allocate some of the many responsibil- ities of our administrative pastor, allowing him to con- centrate more on his areas of preference and great ex- pertise, namely music, education and scholarship. A Board member took over producing the minutes of the Board meeting; we appointed a Board member to be the facilities liaison with HTCC; we sought and obtained from volunteer congregants additional office help in “crunch” time, such as production of the annual report, etc. My sincerest apologies for not being able to be with you at the annual meeting. An ecumenical and interdenominational fellowship

Sponsored by the Episcopal and Lutheran Churches

Dear Family:

2017 SCF Management Board Summary

from outgoing President Patty Klascius

In wrapping up the 2017 Board year, I first want to

thank the faithful and industrious members of our current

board: outgoing member Chris Hamilton, who, in an effort

to lighten our administrative pastor’s duties, took on the

job of recording secretary for our Board this last year; with

one year still to serve, Cliff Erikson, who served as the

Board’s liaison to the Finance and Endowment commit-

tees; and Joe Huseonica, who, as vice-president of the

Board this year, will be your president in 2018. Joe

served as liaison to our International/National Ministries

chair and also was our External Communications liaison.

In addition, he continues developing and guiding our Sen-

iors Care ministry. With two years still remaining on the

Board, Gene Bennington stepped up to be our facilities

representative with HTCC, further lightening our adminis-

trative pastor’s duties in that area. Dave Buhaly stepped

up to be the Board’s liaison with our largest ministry, UP-

CAP, as well as being our liaison to the Worship Commit-

tee. Sandra Kendle became our liaison to Good News and

our revitalized Membership/Welcome committee. In addi-

tion our three ex-officio members, Senior Pastor Nancy

Green, Associate/Administrative Pastor Rob Pearson and

Board Treasurer Jenny Long contributed countless hours

in their traditionally-defined duties to our congregation,

and more. We had an engaged and productive board, and

I thank you all.

As most are aware, budget monitoring and building is-

sues continued, for the second year, to be one of our high-

est priorities, as stewardship is one of the top responsibili-

ties of any non-profit board. We modified our meeting

dates to receive the most up-to-date monthly financial

figures, and monitored them closely. We are projected as

of this writing to finish in the black. In building our 2018

budget we were able to cover our anticipated increased

operating and payroll expenses, and fund our 26 minis-

tries (within Good News, National/International and UP-

CAP) at the same level as 2017, based on the 2018

pledges, non-pledge contributions, and historical plate

offering revenue, thanks to your generosity.

Our current lease with HTCC ends on Dec. 31, 2019.

We entered into talks with HTCC which stalled early on,

but we have been approached by their finance chairman

this month (December), and expect to be able to in faith

negotiate a new lease, easing our concerns about where

we might be in the future. Our lease negotiating team con-

sists of upcoming Board President Joe Huseonica, Cliff

Erickson, Pastor Nancy Green and Treasurer Jenny Long.

With last year’s by-law changes, a new system of inter-

acting with our various ministries and their programs

was implemented. Working together, the ministry chairs

and board liaison promulgated 32 Ministry descriptions,

with lists of calendared tasks that each ministry per-

forms in order to fulfill their duties. An additional 5 paid

job descriptions were produced or revised

(Administrative Assistant, Keyboardist, Handbell Direc-

tor, Sound Technician, and Webmaster). The goal of this

endeavor was to help with transitions of leadership

when ministry chair and/or paid positions became open.

It was a massive undertaking, but also helped to

strengthen a relationship with the Board to the minis-

tries and vice versa. I hope these documents will remain

vital through at least annual updating.

We wanted to insure that both internal communica-

tions with members (handled competently by Rob Pear-

son and Jan Tuckerman through monthly newsletters, e-

mails, bulletin announcements, etc.) and external com-

munications (flyers, community outreach announce-

ments, website, etc.) were current, substantive, and

helpful. Appointed in September, new co-chairs for Ex-

ternal Communications, Mark and Cindy McConnell,

have gotten us off to a great start in our continued effort

to become more visible in the community. I hope you

saw their article in the December Scene (page 31). Rog-

er Smith contributes his skills as our Webmaster.

Finally, as alluded to in prior paragraphs, the Board

endeavored to re-allocate some of the many responsibil-

ities of our administrative pastor, allowing him to con-

centrate more on his areas of preference and great ex-

pertise, namely music, education and scholarship. A

Board member took over producing the minutes of the

Board meeting; we appointed a Board member to be the

facilities liaison with HTCC; we sought and obtained

from volunteer congregants additional office help in

“crunch” time, such as production of the annual report,

etc.

My sincerest apologies for not being able to be with

you at the annual meeting. It was the only meeting that I

was not able to make this entire year, but the date was

dictated by our by-laws and when the budget and year-

end financials would be available. You will be in good

hands with your 2018 Board.

In God’s Work,

Patty Klascius

SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE

The Partnership in Education Scholarship Committee recently awarded a partial Dora

R-Good Neighbor Scholarship to Sam Wieber. Sam was a recipient of a youth scholar-

ship in the spring of 2014. After attending community college during the 2014-2015

year, he still felt very uncertain as to what he wanted to pursue as a career. He decid-

ed to drop out of school for a while and became involved with YWAM (Youth with a Mis-

sion) where he received training and overseas missions experience. Earlier this year he

was involved in a short-term ministry in Pittsburgh. These experiences confirmed that

God was leading him into vocational Christian ministry. He applied and was accepted

at the REACH Training Institute located in Salem, Oregon, and just recently completed

his first term.

Sam’s older sister, Hannah, was a SCF scholarship recipient and a recent graduate

of Oregon Institute of Technology as a Dental Hygienist. She is currently employed in a

dental office in La Pine. Some of you may remember that Hannah was one of our

speakers this past spring at the scholarship fundraising dinner.

We are delighted to assist Sam and look forward to his personal growth and voca-

tional development in the years ahead.

With this scholarship, Partnership in Education awarded $29,900 in scholarship

funds distributed among 18 recipients. This brings our total amount in scholarship

awards over seven years to $137,850. Thank you for your continued support of this

outreach effort.

SHEPHERD OF THE MOUNTAINS ANNUAL MEETING

Lutheran Council President, Dave Buhaly, has set the date of

Sunday, Jan. 21 as the date of the Shepherd of the Mountains

Lutheran Church annual meeting. It will be held after the SCF

Worship Service on that date. On the agenda will be the elec-

tion of officers and a discussion of the Oregon Synod gathering

for 2018 which will include several one-day meetings at differ-

ent locations across the state. One will be in Bend. Other agen-

da items will be discussed. Please join us after the service in

the Children’s Chapel. Grab your coffee and cookies and join us

for this short, but important, meeting.

NEW SCF MEMBERS

Welcome two new members to SCF who are

sisters, Gail Grauer and Grace Phillips. Their fa-

ther was a Lutheran minister with six children

and they have lived in Idaho, Washington and

Oregon. Grace has been here since 1972 and

has worked many jobs at the Sunriver Lodge,

some construction work, US Postal Service deliv-

ery and the Marketplace where she is most famil-

iar to us. Grace has a second job called Gracious

Fixings where she is a "Jack of all trades" for peo-

ple wanting many different things done. Grace is

an accomplished seamstress and now loves

walking with her new knee!

Gail is well known from seven years at the High

Desert Museum and now seven years at the Sun-

river Nature Center as a bird handler every Friday

morning. She and her husband bought property

in 1980 by Fall River and spent until 2003 build-

ing their home for retirement from the field of

education in Yakima. Gail was a school counselor

at the grade, middle and high school level. Gail

and her husband are big outdoors people and

she also loves reading.

OUT OF THE MOUTH OF A 6TH GRADER

As a member of the SCF Outreach Ministry Team was leav-

ing the office of Jen Reuter, the Family Access Network

(FAN) Advocate at Three Rivers School a 6th grade boy en-

tered. He asked Jen for a box of markers. She told him to

take some markers from the large box of new markers that

a grandma bought for the school. He asked, “Did that grand-

ma (the UPCAP member that had just departed) bring these

in?” Jen said no, but she is one of the grandmas and grand-

pas that bring in the coats, snow boots and pants, hats and

mittens to our school. He then said “I like that grandma,

that’s a good grandma to have.” Thinking for a minute, he

then said, “That’s our school’s grandmas and grandpas!”

Members of SCF: thank you for being the

grandma’s and grandpas to Three Rivers School.
