Thinking about presentations to new parents this week, I am

once again reminding all our parents of the importance of

spending time with your children playing, reading and talking.

In her book, The Smartest Kids in the World and How They Got

That Way, Amanda Ripley emphasises the importance of

parents’ encouraging reading and discussing books, movies,

current affairs and in-depth issues with their children. She

notes that one of the key criteria of a successful education is

the ability to think critically; this starts with discussions and

parents asking open (not only closed) questions about the

book the child is reading. Asking open questions has been

proven more successful in developing reading than parents

simply listening to their child read (Jeynes, 2012; Sénéchal,

2006; Sénéchal & Young, 2008). Children who have been

read to also have immense advantages thanks to hours of

exposure to rich language and vocabulary development, all of

which impact significantly on learning.

Common characteristics in the lives of all successful

students, reports Amanda Ripley, were dinner table

conversations and a culture of reading in their homes.

As the year hurtles to a close, hold tight, grab a book and enjoy

the special experience of sharing a story with your child at the

end of the day!

Golf has thrived as a Dainfern Sport this year, with newcomers

continually making their entrance into the team. I am proud of

what our team has achieved both in their skill and as young

throughout the year.

Congratulations to the team and all students who have

participated in this challenging sport. We thank our captain,

Matthew Leonard, for his remarkable leadership and passion

that he has shown for golf and for all he has contributed to
