I congratulate members of the ConstructionStandards Committee of the Construction AdvisoryBoard on their success in compiling the First Edition ofthe English - Chinese Glossary of Terms CommonlyUsed in the Hong Kong Construction Industry.
The Glossary contains some 5,000 Englishconstruction terms with their corresponding Chineseequivalents. It serves to provide a quick reference to thelocal construction industry for facilitating understandingof terms commonly used in the industry. The Glossarywill be continuously updated. Suggestions are welcomeand can be addressed to the Construction StandardsCommittee using the Form at Appendix I.

The Construction Standards Committee advises theGovernment through the Construction Advisory Board on constructionstandards. Members of the Committee comprise representatives fromgovernment departments and major construction related professionalinstitutions and trade associations. The Works Bureau provides secretariatservice to the Committee. The Terms of Reference and Membership of theCommittee are at Appendix n and IK respectively.
The compilation of the Glossary started in end 1995. The firstedition is now completed. The Glossary will shortly be available on Internetthrough the Works Bureau Homepage. The Glossary contains specificconstruction terms commonly used in the local construction industry.Legislative and administrative terms are however excluded. As there aredifferent Chinese equivalents for different areas of application within theconstruction industry, only those Chinese equivalents considered to becommonly used are included in this Glossary. Readers may need to makenecessary adjustments to the Chinese equivalents in their own areas ofapplication.
I would like to thank members of the Committee for theirconcerted effort in compiling the Glossary.
