River Parishes Community College Foundation Raises Matching Funds for Advanced Technology Center for Worker Training

After a successful fundraising campaign to meet a 12 percent match required for state funding, the River Parishes Community College will establish an Advanced Technology Center on its campus that will train students in skilled trades.

The River Parishes Community College Foundation announced Thursday that, with the help of more than 30 individual, business and industry partners, it’s met a capital campaign goal of $1.1 million.

“These businesses and individuals have made a contribution to this project that will have great long-term effects on the

workforce needs of the River Parishes,” Chancellor Dale Doty said in a news release.

The $9.2 million center will be built on River Parishes Community College’s new campus in the Edenborne development in Gonzales, with construction tentatively planned to begin in January 2015.

The center will provide training for welders, electricians, pipe fitters, millwrights, industrial carpenters, process operators and instrumentation technicians.

The $8.1 million for the project that will be provided by the state was legislated in 2013. The center in Gonzales is one of 24 facilities to be built in the state for a total of approximately $245.5 million to train workers to meet the workforce needs of Louisiana, according to River Parishes Community College.

Cajun donated to the River Parishes Community College Advanced Technology Center. Todd Grigsby and William Clouatre attended the celebration at The Houmas House.

Deep Foundations’ Drill Shafts Group Still Making Strides

Cajun Deep Foundations’ Drill Shafts

group has managed to sustain a long

track record of success in safety while

executing some very profitable projects.

Since 2010, the group has executed

193 projects across 7 states without an

OSHA recordable incident. Drilling down

on the details during pre-planning and

hazard recognition has been the key to

success, yielding 90,821 safe man-hours.

Crews under the direction of Gene Landry,

Jonathan Sharp, Charles Vignes and Ken

Morales executed 57 jobs in 2013 without

an injury or incident. This year the team

has completed 32 projects to date, several

of which have been high profile projects for

the Entergy Corporation, Colonial Pipeline,

and Saber Power. Perhaps the most

impressive statistic is that while the group

has continuously grown by increasing its

number of staff members and equipment

fleet, it has managed to work 4+ years

without an OSHA recordable incident. To

show our appreciation, management met

with the drill shafts crews to celebrate

with a chartered fishing trip in Venice,

LA at Deep South Charters. We’d like to

take another opportunity to recognize and

thank each member of the drill shafts

team for their commitment to excellence

in performing safe and quality work.

Drill shafts team members include Romell

Lavigne, David Carter, Donald Edwards,

Brandon Dupuy, Paul Lawrence, and

Charles Nelson.

Drink, Eat, Cool: Summer + South Texas = HOT

We knew it would be hot at our CP Chem

Baytown project, so we decided to take a

proactive approach to keeping everyone

hydrated. Cool down stations were set up

at all four crane locations on site.

With the heat and humidity levels as high

as they are, it is not only important for the

employees to keep hydrated but also to

replace electrolytes and other fluids that

are being lost due to excessive sweating.

The employees are provided with water

and a variety of fresh fruits - pineapples,

peaches, plums, apples and oranges. It

doesn’t stop there. At noon daily, we hand

out a bottle of chilled Gatorade to each

employee and at 3:00pm, we hand out

Squencher pops. Everyone looks forward

to the fruit.

The client is pleased, we are the only

contractor on site with zero heat related

incidents. A small price to pay, as the

cost of the fruit purchased daily averages

about $1.15 per man on the job.

Teamwork and Dedication Lead to Successful Dow LA3 CME Piling ProjectCajun Deep Foundations was solicited in February to bid the piling for the Dow LA3 CME project in Plaquemine, LA. Foster Wheeler USA Corporation is acting as the construction manager for Dow, and when the bid package was received, everyone got to work. Cajun DF hasn’t had much of a presence at the Dow Plaquemine Plant in recent years, and this was a great opportunity to get our foot back in the door. Additionally, many larger packages were to follow including site work, piling, civil and mechanical scopes. The bid was submitted in late February, and it was almost April before an official award was given. Cajun DF received the contract for 65 each 12” x 60’ long close ended pipe piles to be driven and filled with concrete in a self-performed excavation. The scope of work was small compared to other projects performed by Cajun DF, but the opportunity was given to show Dow and Foster Wheeler what we could do. Due to the slow award process and contract negotiations, mobilization began only ten days after the contract was executed. Cajun DF’s estimating, project management, safety and field supervision worked diligently to submit extensive amounts of safety, quality and execution documents to the client. In addition, other vital activities took place with internal preconstruction meetings and a kick-off meeting with Dow and Foster Wheeler.

Cajun DF was given 17 calendar days to complete the work awarded. Work commenced, and within a few days of pile driving activities, there were concerns from the owner’s engineers that the piles would not meet the capacities required. Their immediate response was to add piles to the foundation, and the client was in panic mode. Cajun DF recommended some additional pile dynamic testing to confirm the pile capacities after allowing

them to set-up for seven days. It took some convincing, but ultimately, our advice did not fall on deaf ears. Additional testing was performed, only adding four days to the schedule and minimal additional costs to the owner. Everyone seemed pleased with the outcome. Below is an email that was sent to the Cajun DF superintendent, Dennis Dozier Jr., and project manager, Burt Ogilvie, upon completion.

Dennis,

“I want to take this moment to thank Cajun Deep Foundations. I believe management means helping people to do their best, not just organizing things. I want to tell you how much we appreciate the endless hours of service you dedicated to getting the DOW LA3CME Project completed safely. I was personally impressed with the teamwork. You kept your staff motivated and focused. Even in the face of several obstacles, your continued attention to detail and relentless determination to install a quality product. The demobilization of equipment and the housekeeping was efficient and thorough which shows Cajun Deep Foundations’ commitment to the details of the contract.

“Under your leadership Dennis, the professionalism of your craft personnel displayed character and integrity of a disciplined organization that is committed to achieving excellence safely. Your hard work and effort have paid off. A success well deserved, an occasion worth celebrating. Congratulations!”

Benefits CornerHealth, Dental, & Vision Plans:

Open enrollment is right around the corner! More detailed

information will be sent to each employee before the period

begins. Open enrollment is the only time of the year in which

employees can add coverage(s) previously declined, cancel

coverage and/or make changes to existing coverage unless a

qualifying event occurs during the year. Examples of qualifying

events would be birth of a child, marriage, divorce and loss of

other group insurance coverage. Employees have 30 days from

the date of a qualifying event to make changes during the year.

All changes or additions made during this open enrollment period

will be effective on January 1, 2015.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

We are pleased to announce that there will be no increase to employee premiums for health insurance! As the health

insurance market continues to change under the regulations of

Obamacare, we will remain engaged with our insurance providers

and advisors in an effort to provide the best possible insurance

plan at the most affordable cost to our employees.

• Current participants need to pay special attention to plan

changes that will be effective January 1, 2015.

• The high deductible health plan deductibles are increasing

by the lowest required amount in order to remain compliant

with IRS regulatory changes and continue to be considered a

qualified Health Saving Account (HSA) plan. The employee only

deductible will increase from $1,250 to $1,300. The employee

+ 1 deductible will increase from $2,500 to $2,600. The family

deductible is still in compliance and will not be increased.

• The dental provider is being changed from Benefit Management

Services to AlwaysCare. Your coverage will be automatically

transferred to AlwaysCare if you are currently enrolled in dental

insurance. Dental insurance premiums will increase to $6.35/week

for employee only coverage and to $15.24 for family coverage.

The following changes are being made to the dental coverage:

annual benefit maximum will increase to $1,500; Coinsurance

will be payable at the same percentage in all years -no more

staggered benefit tiers in first 2 years; endodontics (root canals)

and periodontics (gum treatments) are moving from class C (major

service) to class B (basic service). You will still have the freedom

to choose any dental provider or take advantage of discounts that

have been negotiated with providers in the dental network.

• Vision insurance: Coverage for prescription safety glasses

through network providers is being added. There will be a co-

pay of $25 for prescription safety glasses up to a retail value of

$215 (limit 1 per 24 months).

• Action is required by participants covering their spouse on

Cajun’s health insurance plan. All participants covering a

spouse are required to complete the Spousal Coverage Affidavit

form. Failure to complete and return the affidavit form will result in the spouse being dropped from the health insurance plan. The affidavit form will be sent to all participants who

cover a spouse.

401(k) Plan:

Important name change! ING U.S. has changed its name to

Voya Financial. Please take note that your 401(k) statements

and other 401(k) correspondence will be coming from Voya. Only

the name is changing. Nothing changes with your account. You

can continue contacting them at the same phone numbers. The

web address will replace ING with Voya with both versions active

through November 2015 to make it easier on participants. The

new website address is www.voyaretirementplans.com.

The IRS has announced 2015 cost of living adjustments for 401(k) contributions. The new deferral limit will be $18,000 plus

a catch-up contribution of $6,000 for individuals 50 + years old.

2015 is less than three months away! Now is a great time to make

positive impacts on your financial future! When was the last time

you increased the amount of deferrals into your 401(k) account?

It’s a great habit to increase your 401k deferral by 1% each new

year! Are you investing enough money to get the full amount of the

match that Cajun is offering? If you are deferring less than $3,000

a year, you are not getting the biggest bang for your buck! Cajun

matches 100% up to $1,000 in deferrals and 50% of the next

$2,000 deferred. In other words, if you defer $3,000, Cajun will

match your deferrals by placing $2,000 in your account!

In RemembranceIn June, two extraordinarily dedicated Cajun Deep Foundations employees and special men, Chris Jacob and Horace Legros, passed away. Chris worked at Cajun for 33 years and was talented in many trades, spending the last half of his career developing and managing our drill shaft business. He truly loved sharing his knowledge – whether in home building, construction and drilled shafts, cooking or barbequing – with everyone. Horace, a Veteran of the US Military, spent 15 years working at Cajun as a drill shaft operator and foreman. He was a talented operator of drill rigs, cranes and dirt equipment and spent much of his time sharing his knowledge and mentoring less experienced employees. Our hearts go out to their families. We will deeply miss Horace and Chris.

When was the last time you updated your beneficiary form for your 401(k) account? Have you recently gotten

married? Divorced? Had a child? Have

you had a death in the family? These are

all important times when your beneficiary

selection should be reviewed!

Looking Back…..Looking Forward! September was a rough month for small

caps as they got battered - the Russell 2000

fell 6.19%. The big three retreated far less

than that – The Dow dropped 0.32%, the

Nasdaq declined 1.90% and the S&P was

down 1.55% as of September 20, 2014.

How do economists see next year unfolding?

Morningstar sees 2.0 – 2.5% GDP for the

U.S. for 2015, with housing, export growth,

wage growth, very low interest rates and

continuing vitality of energy-dependent

industries as key support factors. It sees

the jobless rate in 5.4-5.7% range and

annualized inflation running between

1.8 – 2.0%. The Wall Street Journal’s

Forecasting Survey projects America’s

GDP at 2.8% for both 2015 and 2016 and

sees slightly higher inflation for 2015

compared to Morningstar. The Wall Street

Journal’s numbers roughly correspond to

the Federal Reserve’s outlook in which the

Fed sees 2.6% - 3.0% growth and 5.4-

5.6% unemployment next year.

What will interest rates do? In the Journal’s

consensus forecast, the federal funds rate

will hit 0.47% by June 2015 and 1.17% by

December 2015. That is in contrast to Fed

officials, who see it in the range of 1.25%-

1.50% at the end of 2015.

Cajun Deep Foundations Recognized by ADSC

Digital Safety HorizonSafety audits are not something most people look forward to. In fact, the amount of companies that don’t conduct audits properly is astounding. However, when a company conducts audits regularly, they can provide invaluable returns. So what is an audit? In short, it’s a tool that, when used correctly, achieves the purpose of determining where a program or procedure is performing relative to standard.

Cajun Maritime decided that the existing paper audits we had been using were simply insufficient. They offered no room for corrections and rarely made it to the office undamaged. Usually after a review with the relevant parties, the audit found its way to a filing cabinet. A few corrective actions would arise, but no real quantitative or tangible, long-term change in behavior was instated.

We needed a grading system that would allow us to share our findings with all levels of management, cause immediate attention to deficiencies and involve all craft levels in jobsite assessments.

It only took a call to Cajun Deep Foundations to find our answer. We found out that they had been experimenting with a new idea, Digital Auditing. By utilizing existing technology in the form of a tablet, we employed a system that took our paper audits and created a digital version. As they say “There’s an App for that”. Now, when we conduct audits in the field, we can capture data on the tablet, complete with photographs and comments, submit the audit in real time to all levels of the project, and the app instantly creates a corrective action list with OSHA regulations tied to each violation. As those deficiencies are corrected, each item

is closed out. Most importantly, it gives us an overall score. During the course of a project where multiple audits are conducted, we can track the progression of our programs and quickly intercede if we see a downward trend. We also involve a member of the crew into the auditing process. This practice gets the worker invested in the program, which is part of the backbone of any good culture.

Remember, an audit is not something that should be looked at negatively. It is one of the most valuable resources available to gauge our company. Just as we use a hammer as a tool to build a job, use audits as a tool to build your program. You may find it’s the most useful one on your belt.

Voting season is upon us and is scheduled for November 4, 2014. One can’t complain if one doesn’t vote. As a result, I ask each of you to make it a point and exercise your right to vote.

Politics is a personal choice. Most of us don’t have the time to study all of the issues. Most of us receive our news and formulate our opinion from what we hear on the radio, what we watch on television or what we read from news print. All of these sources are good, but none should be absorbed without some skepticism and without further evaluation.

What is at stake in this year’s elections, according to the political pundits, is the US Senate. Currently, the Republicans control the House, the Democrats control the Senate and the Democrats have the White House. Since President Obama took office with Democrat control and declared he was going to “transform this country”, let’s look at the direction we’ve gone.

• Our national economic recovery is weak, at best. We are fortunate living in the Gulf Coast area, but a large portion of the country is suffering.

• Personal income taxes are up, and there is a desire from the Democrats to continue to increase them. This means less for you to take home for your hard earned work.

• We have more people relying on government handouts than ever in the history of our country. You, the working man and woman, are paying for it. There is less incentive to work than ever before.

• Our government spending is out of control, and our national debt is approaching $18,000,000,000,000. That’s 18 trillion dollars. It has nearly doubled under democratic control in six years and will stifle our growth and saddle our kids and grandkids with debt. It’s simply a crime we can’t live within our means. We need a balanced

budget amendment. For that matter, we need a budget that has not been submitted and voted upon since Obama took office.

• Our 2nd Amendment, right to bear arms is constantly under attack by the Democrats. The only way we stay free and what separates us from the world is our right to bear arms. We must protect it, and we must not be fooled by incremental gun control.

• Health care is spiraling out of control under Obama Care, and the government has inserted itself between us and our doctors. We must not allow this to happen. We lose our freedom, and healthcare becomes the bureaucratic mess and inefficiencies we see in other government agencies.

• There is not a single government entity that functions efficiently, yet we continue to grow it. We must turn back our citizen’s dependence on government. It’s not the solution to our county’s well-being, and the more it grows the less individual freedom we have.

• We don’t have a cohesive energy policy. We suggest that global warming is manmade and set policy based upon unproven science.

• There are countless administration investigations. Benghazi, IRS, Fast and Furious, NSA spying only to name a few. Our constitution, which has made this country stand out from the world, is under attack by liberal judicial activism interpretations rather than our founder’s intent.

• Our borders are open, and countless illegal aliens are coming into the country. We have laws to prevent such infiltration, yet the administration refuses to enforce them. This is blatantly unfair to those who enter our country the legal way and will threaten our country’s security.

• The Middle East is in turmoil, and we do not have a cohesive foreign policy to fight against Islamic radicalism. It is a real threat to our

country, and we must man up, call it what it is and confront it.

• Political correctness, multi-culturalism and social experimentation have taken a front seat at the detriment of freedom of speech and the long standing traditions of this country. We have become more divided as a citizenry and have become weaker as a result.

• Our religious freedoms are under attack, and we are promoting secularism. We are in moral decay because of political correctness. This is not what our country was founded upon, and this is not what has made our country great.

• The administration has openly circumvented the constitution and Congress by issuing executive orders.

As I stated before, President Obama has insisted that he was going to transform this country. I ask, into what? He can only do so with control of the Senate. We have historically been the model of the world. People want freedom. People die fighting for it, and our own die protecting it. All of these polices incrementally take our freedoms away. I ask, why would we want to transform what has been the beacon of the world? You should ask yourself the same. A vote for a democrat is a vote for his policies.

Thanks to all of you who work at Cajun especially all of you who are highlighted in this quarterly issue. Job well done.
