Managing customer relationships is key for any business, and it’s nothing that Commerce Bank takes lightly either. Kanissa Williams does her part behind the scenes.

As a Systems Specialist, Kanissa focuses on data management. Right now, her entire workload is centered around SalesForce.com, a customer relationship management software program that allows users to learn more about customers and their behaviors. It’s a valuable tool that helps the Commercial Card team analyze business data before the sale and far beyond it.

So, while she isn’t working directly with Commerce clients, Kanissa deals closely with those who are.

“I provide training on SalesForce.com and maintain user roles, security profiles and documentation,” Williams says. “The most important part of my job is working with management and sales reps to provide user support.”

Kanissa’s dedication to her job is evident, as she was rewarded internally with a Commitment to Excellence award in 2007.

Commerce Bank is not only a leader in Commercial Card issuance, but we have also been providing payment acceptance options for more than 40 years. Our commitment to service shows in our low attrition rate, which is half the industry average.

In addition to credit and debit card acceptance, Commerce Bank also offers electronic check processing, gift card programs, wireless mobile solutions, e-commerce solutions and more.

Robust reporting options are available through a secure Internet-based management tool, and systems specialists help make sure merchants are in full compliance with the ever-changing regulatory landscape.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center had heard many times from banks hoping to provide purchasing cards for its managers and directors. But the hospital wasn’t interested in a typical P-card program.

“That’s not what we’re about,” explains Steve Wagner, director of accounting for the three-hospital system. “We want to maintain control of our expenses and invoice processing.”

When Commerce Bank called, however, the conversation was different.

Understanding the hospital’s accounting needs, Commerce suggested not a purchasing card but an automated accounts payable program that would mirror St. Elizabeth’s existing invoice process. Instead of cutting checks, the hospital would pay participating vendors electronically, receiving revenue share in return.

“We liked what we heard, but it seemed too good to be true,” Wagner recalls. So he called other Commerce customers who are using similar automated programs. “They had nothing but good things to say about Commerce.”

With St. Elizabeth’s blessing, Commerce Bank Vendor Enrollers began signing up vendors for the program. By accepting electronic payments, these hospital clients would benefit from faster guaranteed payments along with reduced A/R collection costs. Within months of the program’s implementation, the amount of spend St. Elizabeth was capturing resulted in thousands of dollars in monthly revenue share for the hospital.

And that dollar amount is expected to grow. In late 2008, St. Elizabeth merged with St. Luke’s Hospital, creating the largest hospital system in northern Kentucky. “Our program has been a success,” says April Snedegar, Controller at St. Elizabeth. “But we’ve only scratched the surface.”

“Commerce assured us that setting up the new automated accounts payable program would require much more work on their end than on ours. And that was absolutely the case.”
