Because she was too young to qualify as an army nurse, Cornelia hid in a baggage car bound for Gettysburg, where she cared for sick and wounded men July and August of 1863.

Fred and Cornelia met at Gettysburg, the War’s bloodiest battle

During Fred’s medical leave, Cornelia served at a hospital for freed slaves.

As a surgeon, Fred was a noncombatant and should have been released, yet in 1864 prisoner exchanges had broken down, and he remained imprisoned for ten weeks.
