FRIENDLY SCHOOL. What does this mean? It
means that we will respect the individual needs of
students who have identified allergies (with care
plans) to such products as nuts, milk and eggs to
name a few. In particular, food products that have nuts or are made
from nuts should NOT come to school - ie: peanut paste, Nutella and
nut bars. Our canteen is “nut free” to accommodate individual
students with special needs.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dear Parents, Carers and School Community
Week 4 has started really well with attendance close to
normal levels at 92%. It’s terrific to see everyone back
at school with teachers forging ahead to re-establish
routines, revise previous learning and teach new
content. There are still a small number of students away
through general sickness and we hope they will be back
with us soon. Please remember all children must return
to school and cannot remain at home because of
Covid-19 unless they have a medical certificate stating a
reason. This certificate will need to be submitted to me
so I can apply on your behalf for support to learn at
home.
The arrangements for drop off and pick up of students
have been working really well and we are so impressed
with the improvements students have shown with inde-
pendently entering school and being organised for the
day. Don’t forget if you have a Pre Primary or
Kindergarten child they enter and exit through the gate
on the oval. If you have older children, they can also
meet you there to make pick up a one stop process.
Please continue to practise physical distancing at
the gates and encourage your children to look out for
you to avoid unnecessary time waiting. The gates will
open each morning at 8.15am so please time your
arrival to be between this time and 8.40am when school
starts. Similarly, in the afternoon the gates will open at
2.45pm to allow a staggered exit.
Just a reminder to use safe pick and drop off up when
driving. There are a few who still double park, park
across the road with children crossing from between
cars and illegal use of the Disabled Bays. Your child’s
safety is our main concern so please take the extra
couple of minutes and avoid a lifetime of regret. Thanks
for your support and patience to keep your children safe
and happy.
STAFF CHANGES
Mrs Woodmansey is on long service leave for the rest of the term and I warmly welcome Mrs Samantha Marsh to our school to take over the learning program with our D2 Kindergarten children. I’m sure the transition will be smooth and students and Mrs Marsh will enjoy their time together. Mrs Culver remains the Education Assistant supporting in D2.
ENROLMENTS FOR KINDERGARTEN AND PRE
PRIMARY 2021
Yes, it’s that time again where we take enrolments for
next year’s Kindy and Pre Primary. With the Covid -19
restrictions in place the easiest way for you to proceed
is to call or email the school and we will either email or
post all the required information to you. In the process
we will register your child on our enrolment lists for next
year. If you require assistance, please ask when you
call and we can arrange to meet with you to help. The
school has a new phone number – 92346800. Please
replace the old number in your phones.

P&C Report
Hi everyone
Tomorrow is P&C Day in WA. While we can’t celebrate with you, we’d like to thank you all for your support in our fundraising efforts and events over the past year. There might not be much going on at the moment, but I can assure you there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes by the committee to make sure our P&C can recover from the effects of Coronavirus. The best way you can get behind us at the moment is to support the canteen. Lots of you have been taking advantage of the new online ordering system which is a great way to save time in the morning. The more of you who order from our canteen, the more successful we can be in expanding the menu and ensuring we can cover costs. Visit quickcliq.com.au to set up your account and place an order.
As restrictions begin to ease, we look forward to being able to resume our meetings soon so we can start planning for the rest of the year. We’d love to see all of you who came to our February meeting back again, plus anyone else interested in being involved. Not only is it P&C Day, it’s also National Volunteer Week so it’s the perfect time to start thinking about how you can volunteer in the school community.
A huge thanks to all our wonderful current volunteers we have helping out on the P&C Committee and in the canteen or uniform shop: Henriette Truscett, Meg Betty, Kylie Sharp, Emi-leigh Johns, Pennie Njuguna, Leanne Meyza, Bek McBride, Katie Senior, Kerensa Dodds, Shiz Quayle, Nick Mew, Jody Soper, Bronwen Larkin, Louise, Kezia and Sheela.

REPORTING TO PARENTS
The Education Department has changed the guidelines for reporting given the disruption to learning this year and the difficulty in conducting learning and assessments. For this round of reporting you will receive a report on your child’s progress that has comments without A to E grades. Teacher comments will be based on all assessments they have been able to conduct and information gathered on student learning skills and behaviours. The Attitudes and Behaviour back page will also be completed for each child. There will continue to be the option to have a phone conversation to discuss any aspect of your child’s learning. The timeline for reporting has changed and closer to the end of term I will let you know when to expect reports home. This may be a good time to commence emailing reports to families where the option exists.
SHORT AND SWEET
Canteen - You can now order online thanks to the P&C and our wonderful Manager Ms McBride.
Mr T’s Faction Fitness Challenge – Please encourage your children to engage in the Fitness Challenge. Why not make it a family challenge?
Uniform Orders – These can be downloaded from the
App and Webpage, filled in and lodged through the office
to be filled. If you are paying with cash the exact amount
needs to be tendered.
Photos – We are planning to go ahead with photos and
have been exploring a safe and fun way to give you
those memories for this year. Date to be advised.
Year 6 Camp – The date has been adjusted to give us the best chance of continuing with camp and Mrs Melvin and the teachers are working with the camp team to plan as if we are going. Any plans will of course be subject to Education Department approval and medical advice.
Regards, Steve Richards, Principal

Dear Parents/Carers
This week all students were once again required to attend school. It was a great day on Monday to see those few
students who were isolating for the past weeks. Conversations I have had with students have been positive and all
have told me they are happy to be back at school, seeing their friends and working in their classes. There has
been quite a buzz around the school with busy students engaging in classroom learning. Next week our STEAM
and ARTS program will restart but we still have choir, assemblies, incursions and excursions on hold. Once we are
able to have large groups meet again these will be reinstated.
Teachers are starting to write semester one reports. Due to COVID-19, the department has given us flexibility to
reconfigure reports to suit the school. It has been stipulated that there is no requirement to grade reports. Teach-
ers met yesterday and decided our students will have their goals graded and reports will not need to be adjusted a
great deal. Some learning areas such as cooking, STEAM, The ARTs will not be able to be reported on as these
were stopped when guidelines and restrictions were needed to be adhered to. A comment will be placed on the
report to state why these areas are not being reported on. Reports will be sent home as usual in the last week of
school. At this stage, IEP meetings will take place again next term as guidelines state we are able to meet with
parents in this capacity. More detailed information in regard to progress can be discussed in these meetings.
Currently there is still no therapy able to happen on the school site. I don’t envision therapists being onsite for a
while yet. If you have concerns in regard to this, please ask your therapist to carry out therapy in your home envi-
ronment as an alternative to the school site. Allowances can be made for students to start a little later on a day or
leave slightly earlier if you are requiring to do therapy at home. If this is something you would like to do, please
phone and coordinate that with me and I will discuss the process and ensure you get the correct paperwork to
complete in order to do this.
Dropping students at the gate in the morning has seen some great positives for all our students. Many of our older
students are independently navigating to class and independently unpacking their bags, entering the classroom
and settling in to start their morning routine. It’s great seeing our younger students carry their own bags as they
walk to class and working hard at carrying out routines independently as well. This is definitely one positive that
has come out of the unfortunate circumstance of parents not being able to come on site.
Just a reminder that Monday 1st June is a public holiday and school will not be open. Don’t forget to like our Face-
book page – just search Wirrabirra Education Support Centre, and regularly check our Web page – wirrabir-
raesc.wa.edu.au.
Our new phone system is up and running so ensure you have the school number changed to 9234 6850 in your
devices. Don’t forget if your child is absent or you need to get a message to the school, use our messaging system
to let us know, this number is 0438 960 869.
Once again, thank you to all families for the support the school has received in the last weeks. It has been a time of change and adjustment and we appreciate the support with everything we have had to put in place.
Kind regards
Julie Dawson

With the current restrictions in place, many sporting
events have been put on hold or sadly cancelled. In order
to make sure Wirrabirra students still have a way of
keeping fit and active whilst having fun and a bit of
friendly competition, our Faction Leaders have devised a
program entitled the Faction Fitness Challenge. Students
are encouraged to complete achievable workouts at
home to build both their fitness and skills, they then
record their results and return these to school for
collection each Tuesday.
The challenge goes for three weeks, thank you to all
students and parents who got behind the challenge in
Week 1.
The current scores are as follows;
Congratulations to the following classes for winning prizes
in the first week of the challenge.
Junior Class: Jarrah 6 (formerly A6)
Senior Class: Marri 2 (formerly C2)
Overall Winner: Banksia 1 (formerly B1)
All individual entrants are also placed into a raffle and the
lucky winners will be called out over the P.A. to collect
their prizes.
I am looking forward to watching this challenge grow in
Weeks 2 and 3.
Keep active everyone,
Kris Trenberth, Wirrabirra Physical Education Teacher
