Highlights of the report
The Overall Job Index falls from 1000 in July to 781 in October. Historically, the seasonal decline in October is
about 10%, this year the decline is sharper at 21.9%
Global economic slowdown affects metros; the index indicates decline in new jobs by 20%, which is beyond
the seasonal decline of 10%.
Banking industry shows a slowdown in hiring in the month of October.
Legal and government jobs see an increase and gain attractiveness over the period August, September and
October 2008.

III cities across India. ‘JobSpeak’ is a unique initiative by Naukri.com to provide its stakeholders and users across
locations, an overview on job prospects and attractive occupations as well as a peek into industries gaining
attractiveness and industries losing sheen. Overall, it is indicative of the health of the economy.
Naukri.com serviced over 32,500 clients in the past year. The report compiles an index on new job listings
added to the site every month. The listings are representative of the jobs posted on the site by recruiters that
are clients of Naukri.com. The team at Naukri.com has successfully mapped and derived trends to reflect the
online availability of jobs. To calculate the index, new jobs in July have been taken on a base of 1000. The
August, September and October index is compared with July. A summary of trends in October as compared to
July is presented in the Executive Summary section. The charts with the corresponding numbers have been
collated in the annexure.
Executive Summary
In tumultuous times, the first indicator of a
slowdown in the economy is the job availability. The
Job Index in October 2008 is 781 as compared to
1000 in July 2008, thus reflecting a decline in new
job opportunities. Historically, the seasonal decline
in October is 10% as recruitment slows down due to
the festive season, this year the slowdown in hiring
has been sharper affecting new jobs by 21.9%. The

Index Value of Jobs by City
index suggests that companies are scaling back their recruitment plans due to the global financial crisis and the
current economic conditions.
The index indicates that attractive sectors in the current scenario include Telecom, Pharma and Hospitality as
these have been more stable as compared to the other sectors. The dip seen in these sectors during October
could be due to the seasonal fluctuations. Some other sectors, although very niche, like Government, Defence
and Legal gained attractiveness in the recent months.
Industries that have lost attractiveness over the past three months include Real Estate Banking and Finance, IT
and Retailing. These industries were on a high growth path till July, generating critical mass of jobs in India.
City Wise Analysis: Cities across India witness a jobs slowdown in the wake of industry slowdown
Metros that are the bulk provider of jobs witnessed a decline in new jobs to the tune of 20%-30%.
In the Delhi – NCR region, new jobs fell sharply
after maintaining stability in Aug and Sep. The job
index for Delhi fell from 1000 to 786.
Mumbai witnessed a higher setback in the month
of Oct as compared to Sep and Aug, the job index
fell from 1000 to 715.
Bangalore, the IT hotspot, has lost new jobs since
Jul, especially in Aug which saw a decline of close to
20% compared to Sep.
Chennai saw a marginal increase in new job creation during Sep, however October saw a fall to the tune of
10%.
Hyderabad and Pune bore the brunt of the slowdown especially in the IT sector and witnessed a decline over
15% jobs in October.
Jobs in Kolkata were severely affected with October alone witnessing a decline in new jobs by over 32%.

Chandigarh, affected to an extent by the IT industry slowdown, saw a slowdown in hiring to the tune of 35%
since July.
Industry wide slowdown has set in, barring niche industries
IT – Software and Hardware, heavily affected by the
global crisis have seen a decline in new job creation
by almost 25% since July this year. Business flowing
in from foreign countries was deferred or cancelled
impacting hiring for bench.
Banking and Financial Services have seen a decline
in new jobs by over 32% in October, after
maintaining stability in Aug and Sep this year.
Construction and Engineering have seen a decline in
new jobs by almost 22% since July this year.
While the telecom industry was looking up and saw increased job creation in Aug and Sep, in Oct the new
jobs in the sector fell by almost 17%. Usually, there is a slowdown in the sector due to the festive season,
however, this October the slowdown is sharper.
Interestingly, the BPO industry witnessed a slight bounce back in October after witnessing a decline in new
jobs in Aug and Sep, an early indicator of the renewing faith in outsourcing.
The Pharma industry has been comparatively less affected with a fall of less than 15% in the index.
Niche sectors like Government, Security Services and Legal saw an increase in new jobs over the period.

Functional area-wise Analysis: Pharma professionals in high demand
Across most functional areas and departments, the decline in new jobs on the site has been to the tune of 15-
20%.
The only positive indication during October was for the BPO professionals, with an increase in new jobs by
almost 10%.
Pharma professionals have been least affected by the slowdown with the Index at 975 as compared to July.
In Sep the index touched a high of 1077
The slowdown sieved through most functional
areas in October with Sales, Business
Developers, Project Managers, Banking –
Insurance, Marketing and HR professionals
seeing a deceleration in availability of new jobs.
September was, comparatively, a more positive
month with Sales, HR, and Marketing seeing a
marginal increase in availability of jobs.
In October, new job creation for Project Managers and Sales and Business Development Executives fell by a
huge margin, indicating the low business sentiment in the market. IT- Software and Banking professionals
saw a drastic decrease in availability of new jobs in the month of October.

Methodology
The data has been sourced from Naukri.com and is reflective of the listings on the site. Jobs have been
categorised by location, functional area, industry. The index has been calculated across cities/ functional area-
Deptt/ industry verticals.
On basis of new job listings added to the site every month, the data shows an increase or decline in the jobs. To
calculate the index, jobs in July have been taken on a base of 1000. The August, September and October data
has been indexed against July.
