What is an Industrial Partnership?

• The Industrial Partnership is a Partnership of Employers taking responsibility for skills across an industrial sector. In this instance the science based industries

• They should:-

• Connect to Strategic Industry Councils and Industrial strategies• Challenge current skills arrangements and the status quo• Look to the future including new technologies and skills for growth• Be ambitious long term partnerships• Deliver an impact on skill for a sector

Government is inviting bids for Industrial Partnerships through a competitive fund of £240m. If Pilots are successful they could change the skills landscape to an Employer owned one

Why is this needed?

“ We want work experience interspersed within traditional degrees”

The Problem: currently many graduates lack industry experience and are not immediately-work ready – it is costly and time consuming to employers to make them operational. The solution: Employers want to influence the design and be involved in the recruitment process for graduates for work experience in their companies.

“We want bespoke Apprentices that fit our business model ”

The Problem: Our business is changing and developing and we cant access Apprentices that fit with our business. We need to be looking forward and establishing Apprentices for the future to meet the growing demand for science based technicians. The solution: An Industry focused Apprenticeship scheme which is more flexible both in the content and the way in which it is delivered. An Apprenticeship Guide for Life Sciences Employers – an easy reference guide which gives hints and tips and answers FAQs on employing an Apprentice.

“Young people need better information to inform their subject choices, what subjects lead to careers?

The Problem: There is very little clear information available to inform young people of what they need for a science based career.The solution: Better career information delivered in a way that works for young people.

Why is this needed?

“ We want to be able to engage directly with Universities and have a better exchange of Research ideas.”

The Problem: It is difficult for SME’s to achieve traction with HEI’s and or get traction in their areas of interest The solution: Need to incentivise SME based Research projects.

“The system is really confusing and we don’t have the capability to navigate our way around it. We don’t have the capacity anymore to manage this activity.”

The Problem: Lack of knowledge and capacity to navigate the systemThe solution: A service to support Company HR activity.

“The NHS is a huge driver for us and we need to work more closely with more exchange of ideas and people”

The Problem: The public private interface is changing and we need better ways of working across this interface. The solution: Build training solutions and exchange programmes to facilitate.
