Appeal for Support to Rebuild Flood Ravaged Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand’s Hour of Grief

Uttarkashi Flash floods is probably the worst kind of disaster that has occurred in the recent past in this country. The fury of the floods in the Himalayan state has been so devastating and deadly that forceful flood waters washed away anything and everything that came its way.State sources have estimated the loss of life to be more than 10,000. The devastation has taken just 36 hours and the loss is totally unfathomable as roads and communications have been completely wiped off.

Immediate Relief & Rehabilitation by Sewa International

• Braving all odds, over 500 volunteers with sheer willpower have been working right from the moment the reports of the dreadful floods started pouring in.

• At the moment, they are assisting the ITBF forces serving over there for relief and reaching out to the stranded pilgrims across various locations in the affected region.

• Every day truckloads of relief materials are being dispatched from Dehradun to various locations devastated by the flood.

• Volunteers are engaging ponies to carry the relief materials like food packets, grocery, mineral water, medicines etc to unapproachable places.

• Volunteers are working round the clock in Maneri to provide food to at least 1000 pilgrims everyday.

• Other important relief camps like Rishikesh, Shrinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, are also providing food and basic healthcare to the pilgrims.

Urgent Requirements

• Considering the enormity of the situation, we are in need of huge relief material for distribution like food including grocery and utensils, tents, medicine, mineral water, etc.

• General medicine like chrocine, paracetamol, and equipments like sterilized hand gloves, etc are needed in large quantity.

• For providing relief effectively, 10 more camps are being established all through the flood affected area in next 3 days.

•A list of medicine, groceries and home kit is attached herewith estimated quantity though medicine has to be separately considered.

•Each home kit is right now estimated to cost Rs.14000/- as these families have lost almost everything. We are trying to bring down this cost as much as possible. Total Estimated cost of relief Community kitchen –

SI Tsunami Relief and Rehabilitation Work:

• Tsunami 2004 was probably the worst disaster hitting the coastal states of Bharat and other countries on 26th December 2004. Several thousands of people perished and millions were affected across Asia and Africa. Next only to Indonesia, Sri Lanka was the worst hit with over 50,000 deaths.

• Devastation in Tamil Nadu was no less with over 20,000 casualties and widespread destruction across the coastal districts.

• Volunteers from Seva Bharathi Tamil Nadu, Jan Sankshema Samithi, Vivekanand Kendra, Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram supported by Sewa International had started massive relief works in affected regions right from December 26, 2004 when the disaster struck the Indian coastline.

SI Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka Relief and Rehabilitation: 2009

• SI supported 10 mass feeding camps in the two states serving over 20,000 people for over a week till the water receded. Once the affected people were shifted to safer places, SI distributed over 25 truck-loads of relief materials.

• In Kurnool district, SI constructed 5 community development centres in five villages to benefit 15,700 flood affected people.

• SI operates a Health centre in morning, women’s empowerment program in the afternoon and a study centre in the evening operating from each of the community centres.

• In Mahboobnagar district, SI identified 32 villages targeting 59,500 flood victims. Out of the 32 villages, 17 villages are devoid of public health centres as the nearest health centres are at a distance of 10 KM - two mobile dispensaries connect these 17 villages and reach the affected people at their door steps attending to their health needs.
