Dear Friends,

Our church is embarking on an exciting spiritual journey. In the coming nine months to a year, we will be participating in a program called “Churches Alive.” “Churches Alive” will help us deepen our spiritual lives, as individuals and as a community. It will be led by two teams: a Leadership Team that guides the process, and a Prayer Team that undergirds the process with prayer and spiritual practice. Through the process, we will move towards a discernment of God’s guidance for our church. We will work towards answers to the questions, “Who is God calling us to be? and “What is God calling us to do in the years ahead?”

All of us have seen signs of what is called the “changing landscape of ministry.” Church attendance is no longer the social requirement it used to be. Shopping, sports, and just staying home with coffee and bagels are all socially acceptable activities for a Sunday morning. In the wider culture, churches are sometimes perceived to be hypocritical, moralistic, out of touch, and boring. Although we know that perception is false, if it’s out there in the culture, in order for our ministry to thrive in this new day and time, we have to change that perception by our words and our actions.

The good news is that people who don’t attend church are often seeking spiritually. They are looking for acceptance and belonging. They are looking for a connection to the Holy. They are looking for tra-dition (but not traditionalism). Our church has a lot to offer those spiritually seeking folks. “Churches Alive,” by the grace of God, will help us shape our ministries reach out to spiritual seekers and function faithfully in the years to come.

“Churches Alive” is a program of the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ, one of two denominations with which our church is affiliated. We will work with a coach who will provide re-sources and support. We will be applying for a “Vitamin (vital ministries) Grant” from the Hampden As-sociation of the UCC to help cover the cost.

Here are some of the things we will do in “Churches Alive:” Share stories in large and small groups

Practice good communication skills, especially when we disagree

Learn new ways to pray together and in solitude

Do a thorough assessment of our church’s property and financial practices

Gather information about the community surrounding the church, to find opportunities for

Ministry

God’s Spirit is at work among us. Signs of vitality are popping up already. Our youth are getting to-gether with the youth from UCC Second Church for fellowship, retreats, and service projects. A group has organized to welcome refugees who are settling in Westfield with kits of kitchen and cleaning sup-plies. May God open our eyes and ears and hearts to more ways we can follow Jesus and bring glory to God.

Quilts are needed to exhibit at our “Candy Cane Fair.” A favorite quilt will be voted on by the attendees, a prize will be given. A fee of $10 per quilt is charged. The quilt may be for sale by the owner. We hope to have a wonderful exhibit.

The World Service com-mittee has received emails from Elizabeth Kennedy on conditions at HELO Haiti. This is one the international missions

that we support. She listed materials that they need---full size new sheets, children’s new underwear and socks—

for age 4 up to teenagers. If you have watched the news it is hard to compre-hend how they can manage there. We know how well you support our neigh-bors at the Food Pantry and the Samari-tan Inn. Autumn is a great reminder of God’s creative diversity: all those colors, all those varieties of trees. Bird feeders attract birds of assorted sizes, colors, favored foods and nesting habits. So many categories of living things and such wide differences within each! Humanity is a prime example. We are of different sizes, colors, customs, reli-gions, mode of dress and national origins. Genesis 1:31 says that God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. There is a divine touch to all of creation, including us human beings. Therefore, when Jesus said, “Love one another as I have loved you,” we can assume that he meant we are called to care about each other and take pleasure in our diversity. With greater understanding of each other, we see more similarity than differences.

An Ecumenical Series ~ From Strangers to Friends

Join us in trying to carry out Jesus’ love commandment by coming to know more about families who are settling in our area (350 refugees this year through Ascentria). Where do they come from? What is the impact on our schools? How can we welcome without intimidating? How does this change feel to us, in our hearts? What? Folks from Turkey, Syria, Somalia, Iran, Ukraine, Moldova, Congo, Bhutan and Iraq are arriving monthly, being housed by Ascentria, Catholic Charities and Jewish Family Services. An ecumenical effort (our church, 2nd Con-g’l, Central Baptist and Wyben Community Church) continues to make “kits” to complete the furnishing of those homes.

Here’s what you can do. Either offer funds to buy hygiene products or purchase them yourself, leaving them in a box provided in the coat room. (List follows) These items and kits from sister churches are stored in our base-ment.

Community Christmas Festival

Mark you calendars now!

The Community Carol Festival will again usher in the 2016 holiday season with festive Christmas music. The concert will be held on Saturday, December 3rd at 4:00 PM and will feature the adult chamber choir, Novi Cantori, The New England Brass Quartet and Moriah (a division of Young Singers of Greater Westfield).

The concert has no admission charge, but all dona-tions will be gratefully accepted.

Meals for Families in

Crisis Situations

The diaconate has decided to reinstate a program to provide meals to families in cri-sis. Initially the program will run for a trial period of approximately October 2016 through June 2017. As long as 20 people from the congregation are willing to provide no more than 2 meals per year. Sandra Chamberlain and Barbara James have de-veloped and will oversee the program as they did a few years ago. If you would like to join this effort please contact Sandra Chamber-lain or Barbara James for further information.

Bob has changed the lock (temporarily at the request of Women’s Fellowship) on the library room so that the Christmas items may be displayed there. If you need entry, please see Peggy, Cindy, Bob or Joan Deacon.

Mike has inquired about the best way to report an emergency in the church building. The fire depart-ment has advised us to always call 911 first even though we are next door to the fire department.

Office Administrator Peggy is checking and updating all first aid kits in the building. When she finds something that needs updating, she generously purchases it on her own. We thank her for her donations of needed items when required.

Church Parking Lot Rental

Our church owns a piece of property which is a parking lot on Broad Street. Presently we receive rent from Brad Moir, a lawyer for 15 spaces. Re-cently it was brought to our attention that Westfield State University is looking for 40 parking spaces in downtown West-field. Bob has talked with them and they would agree to use their liability insurance, plow the snow, install needed lighting, monitor the parking lot, keep it clear of trash, provide needed signage, and pay $400 a month to the church. We need to paint lines in the lot. Bob is working on a lease document for the university.

Members of the Property Committee will be doing a “deep cleaning” of the kitchen on Tuesday October 25th at 6:30 PM.

Holiday Faire at Church on the Green will be held on November 18 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and November 19 from 9:00 Am to 2:00 PM. Not only has our name been changed but several new features will be evident to shoppers when they come by.

A raffle of approximately thirty five themed baskets, handmade, and NFL items will be available to win with a purchased raffle ticket deposited in an appropriate numbered container. Raffle tickets will be on sale both Friday November 18 and Saturday November 19 with the winners to be drawn at the close of the fair. Bring your own address labels to get your tickets filled out quickly.

New and exciting is our new and beautiful "Christmas Room" filled with Department 56 Dickens Vil-lage collectibles donated anonymously by a very good church friend. The room will have on display Christmas scenes with buildings and accessories, with original boxes, for sale at way below retail prices.

For those shoppers who have enjoyed the fairs of the past, there will still be the delicious baked food table, Friday night suppers and Saturday lobster luncheons, Silent auction, handmade goodies table, youth group jewelry room, beautifully decorated trees with ornaments for sale in each of the rooms and Church School members will sell various kinds of fudge.

Once again beautiful quilts will be on display in the sanctuary to be voted on by each visitor. If you have a quilt you would like to enter, visit the church's web site, www. churchonthegreen.org for a registration form and more information.

Each area of our beautiful church will be brimming with gift ideas for the holiday shopper and home-made goodies to add to your Thanksgiving dinner. Something tasty for Thanksgiving Morning

Baked Apple French Toast Recipe

Recipe yields 10 servings with a prep. Time of 20 minutes.

20 slices French bread (1 inch thick) 2 tsp. vanilla extract

1 can (21 ox) apple pie filling 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

8 eggs 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

2 cups of milk

Topping

1 cup packed brown sugar 1 cup chopped pecans

1/2 cup cold butter, cubed 2 tbsp. corn syrup

Directions

Arrange 10 slices of bread in a greased 13 x 9 in. baking pan. Spread with pie filling, top with remaining bread. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Remove from refrigerator 30 minutes be-fore baking. Meanwhile place brown sugar in a small bowl. Cut in butter until mixture resem-bles coarse crumbs. Stir in pecans and corn syrup. Sprinkle over French toast. Bake uncov-ered at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

Yield 10 servings.

Our congregation, through the World Service Committee and Women’s Fellowship devel-oped a relationship with HELO orphanage in Les Cayes, Haiti over a year ago. I am over-whelmed by the deep concern and caring for the 50+ children at HELO, many of whom went through the death and destruction of the 2012 earthquake and now the devastation of Hurricane Matthew. $1500 has been offered by these two groups to help with reconstruction: roofs need to be replaced, shower/latrines repaired, animal pens rebuilt, clothing, bedding and food replaced.
