a n i n t r o d u c t i o n t o m u n i c h

Located in the north of the Bavarian Alps, on the river Isar, Munich (München) is Germany‘s third largest city. The name München (‘home of the monks’) derives from an early monastery founded in the eighth century. The local monasteries started the beer brewing traditions for which Munich is still renowned for. Participants of the Euro Fed Lipid Congress 2010 as well as their accompanying guests who find some time for sightseeing will certainly appreciate what Munich has to offer.

The city was founded by Duke Henry the Lion in 1158, and in 1255 became the seat of the Wittelsbach dynasty, who ruled the duchy, electorate and kingdom of Bavaria for the next 738 years until the end of WWI in 1918. Their patronage of the arts and extensive collections provided the basis for this affluent city’s world-class museums, theatres and galleries. Despite considerable wartime damage during WWII, the city has been impressively restored.

Pulsing with prosperity and “Gemütlichkeit” (cosiness), Munich revels in its own contradictions. Folklore and age-old traditions exist side by side with sleek BMWs, designer boutiques and high-powered industry.

Despite all its sophistication, Munich retains a touch of originality that visitors find charming. The people’s attitude is one of live-and-let-live – and Münchners will be the first to admit that their city is little more than a Weltdorf (world village).

Dear Colleague,

After 10 years of rotation through Europe the Euro Fed Lipid con-gress returns to the country where it all began. Back in 2000, approx. 300 delegates gathered in Würzburg for what was origi-nally planned as the 53rd DGF congress, then co-organized by the DGF and AFECG as a “Joint International Congress” and later de-clared as the first Euro Fed Lipid congress. During the congress, four societies from France, UK, The Netherlands and Germany decided to found a new European Federation – at the time more a vision than a reality.

Euro Fed Lipid has since then come a long way. The federation has grown to eleven member societies with the 12th about to join. The congresses are recognized as an annual “don’t miss this!” event of the Lipids, Fats and Oils world with up to 850 delegates, including 200 students. We are equally pleased that our journal, the “European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology” is now – with a 5 year impact factor of 1.582 – a well received publication, on a global scale.

We now look very much forward to adding to this exiting deve-lopment and kindly invite you to take part in what is expected to become a special highlight, the 8th Euro Fed Lipid congress in Munich. If fats, oils and lipids are your profession, Munich is the place to be this autumn.

The future of oil refining

Increase OIl YIelds wIth PurIfIne® Plc

Purifine® enzyme is a phopholipase c that converts phos-pholipids found in crude oil to diacylglycerol, and releases the neutral oil entrained in gums. refining oil using this revolutionary type of degumming enzyme has the following benefits:

• reduced degumming yield losses by up to 2.5%

• degummed oil that is low in phosphorus and is easy to refine

• no increase in ffa

• Operating conditions are compatible with current processes

• easy to integrate into existing processes for degummed oil, rBd oil or biodiesel production

Guided City Tour by bus

Meeting point will be in front of the Westin Grand Hotel. Departure is at 11:00, please pick up your tickets from the congress office before 10:30.

The cosmopolitan city of Munich with a heart has a population of 1.3 million and presents itself in various kinds of styles, from the gothic to the modern times. The small settlements around the Tegernsee were founded around 800 by the Benedictine monks calling them APUD MUNICHEN. From that designation the name Munich evolved. The duke of welph, Henry the Lion, founded the city, it was first mentioned in records in the year 1158.

The style of the modern times places a magnificent emphasis on the Olympic Park and the World of BMW which contrasts with

the century old baroque castle Nymphenburg whose foundation stone was laid in 1664. It was here that King Ludwig II, the famous fairytale prince, was born.

It was Ludwig I (grandfather of Ludwig II) who in the 19th Century shaped the city with its Ludwigstraße, Königsplatz („royal square“) and a part of the residence.

Munich, known as a magnificent cultural city, has a lot of mu-seums to offer, among them the German Museum representing technology from the past to the present times, the three famous Pinacothecas, Lenbachhaus Art Gallery, the new Brandhorst Mu-seum, the National Museum as well as the Prehistorical Museum, just to name a few.

The Bavarian State Parliament sits imposingly at the end of the famous Maximilianstraße built by King Max II. Maximilianstraße is also known for its elegant shops.

Full Day Bus Tour to Southern Bavaria

Neuschwanstein – Oberammergau – Ettal

08:00 Bus departure from the front of the Westin Grand Hotel to Neuschwanstein castle.

The picturesque trip to Neuschwanstein through the foothills of the alps with views of the moraine hills (alluvial gravel formed in the last ice age) will take approx. 2 hours.

With nearly 1.3 million visitors a year, located on top of a moun-tainside, Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the world’s most visited attractions. The castle was built by the famous fairytale King Lud-wig II from 1869 to 1886, but due to his early tragic death he could not complete his work.

Inside, visitors will find many pictorial scenes from the Nibelungen saga which Richard Wagner used as a basis for many of his operas.

The Castle can be reached on foot in approx. 30-40 minutes along a lightly sloping road (not suitable for people with walking disabi-lities). During favorable weather conditions there is a bus which goes nearly all the way up to the Marien Bridge, from there it is a 10 minute walk to the castle.

After an enjoyable lunch served in the Hotel Mueller, the bus will take you to Oberammergau in around 1 hour. The village is known as the home of a long tradition of woodcarving. Oberammergau is also famous for its „Lüftlmalerei,“ or frescoes, of traditional Bava-rian themes, fairy tales, or religious scenes found on many homes and buildings.

After a short round trip, the journey will then be continued on to the Benedictine Abby in Ettal where you will arrive some minutes later.

In Ettal you will have the opportunity to purchase from an assort-ment of over 40 different kinds of prize-winning original Bavarian Beers. The return trip back to Munich will take approx. 1½ to 2 hours along the Autobahn.

The Unionsbräu was founded in 1885 by the councillor of com-merce and privy councillor Joseph Schühlein, 20 years later it was one of the largest breweries in Munich. In 1922 the company mer-ged with another brewery, the Löwenbrauerei. In the 1980’s the war-damaged listed building was renovated and brought back to public life. Innkeeper Ludwig Hagn founded the home brewery in 1991 with a strong sense of nostalgia and love for details. The popular beers are served in rooms decorated in the proper style of bavarian „Gemütlichkeit“.

you will continue on to the cathedral – also known as Frauenkirche („Church of Our Lady“) - with its two towers is the city’s landmark. A legend explains the devil’s footstep inside the cathedral.

Followed by the Alte Hof and the Residence, which testifies to the glory of the Wittelsbacher, the Bavarian rulers from 1180 to 1918.

The building of the Munich House of Artists and its culture of festi-vities has become a part of the history of Munich. It was originally conceived as a place of convergence between culture and soci-ety. In its outer appearance the House of Artists is still living proof of the style of its origin in time. In 1893, Prinzregent Luitpold set the foundation stone of the building designed by architect Gabriel von Seidl, and in 1900 he personally opened the house to the public. Thus he fulfilled the dream of the Munich artists united in the „Allotria“ society in the 1850s: to bring together the patricians, the well-to-do brewery families and new industralists in one place to meet the artists of the time; Franz von Lenbach, Fritz August Kaulbach and Franz von Stuck are recognized as the hosts and creators behind many glamorous festivities.

Extensively destroyed during World War II, Munich was later re-constructed in large parts in its historical style. The walk offers an opportunity for a deeper insight into Munich City, than the bus tour on Sunday.

Continuing on to the Viktualien Market which comes to life from 4 o‘clock in the morning, you will be offered a multicoloured mixture of fruits and vegetables from around the world.

you will visit the new synagogue on Jakobsplatz, with its modern construction stands alongside the medieval building of the City Museum, followed by the cattle well on Rindermarkt, which is one of the 1200 wells found everywhere within in the city, which contri-butes to the cities lush greenery and keeps the city agile.

Walking past Marienplatz with its neo-gothic city hall was and is the heart of the city, you can enjoy the clock tower chime each day at 11:00 and 12:00, during summer also at 17:00.
