An Inviting Community Following Christ For Life Volume 53, Issue 3 March 2019 Jesus Prayed and So Can We Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Mark 1:35 He called me today on the Monday of Holy Week. His voice was charged with feeling. Greg, I just had to tell you how powerful an experience I had during the prayer vigil. He went on to talk about never being able to find time for sustained prayer. He said that work and family meant his days and nights were full. Then he said, But during the Vigil, when I had an hour to be with God. Wow!We learn from Jesus and the early followers of the Lord, that prayer was a natural part of their lives. Because we at Trinity believe that prayer is not only important but essential to the life of faith, we gather twice a year for some time of extended prayer. I want to ask you now to help make this Vigil the one with the greatest participation ever. If you will, you might end your time also saying: Wow! During our 24-Hour Prayer Vigils each of us is offered an hour to pray as the Lord Jesus did, in a solitary place. Our Prayer Vigil is not all of us spending 24-hours in corporate prayer, as we do on Sundays, but rather each of us is given a space for private prayer. This is done by providing a quiet place so several people can be praying throughout the main building. Someone will be in the sanctuary; another might be in the Hospitality Room or the Columbarium or the Fellowship Hall. During the Prayer Vigil you will read the Bible and "pray to your Father who is unseen" and, I promise you, that time of prayer will seem to fly by and be over before you know it. (For those who like, there will be a prayer station set up for 90-minute time slots.) This affords us the opportunity to follow Jesus' own example of getting away from everything for a while so we can speak with God in prayer. As we begin the Holy Week journey to Christ's cross and on to his glorious resurrection, the Prayer Vigil is a wonderful opportunity to be called from your busy life into the quiet of our church building and find the Lord Jesus ready to hear you. If you have participated before, I hope you will sign up to again enjoy this offer for an hour of prayer. If you have not been able to pray at the Vigil, I want to ask you to seriously consider doing so. Our goal is to have 100 people participating. Sign ups begin this month. The Prayer Vigil will begin at Noon on Friday, April 12 till Noon on Saturday, April 13. The Prayer Vigil is an offer for you to close the door and in the quietness of our church to seek the Lord's face; if we will, we will find, as at every previous Prayer Vigil, that the reward promised by Jesus will be an experience of love and grace and peace and strength that will transform us. I hope you will sign up during coffee hour and join us as we spend an hour in prayer, a sweet hour alone with God. Jesus Prayed and So Can We Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Mark 1:35 He called me today on the Monday of Holy Week. His voice was charged with feeling. “Greg, I just had to tell you how powerful an experience I had during the prayer vigil.” He went on to talk about never being able to find time for sustained prayer. Session Update At its stated meeting on February 4, 2019, the Session: Reviewed in small groups Trinity’s Mission and Vision statements, “An Inviting Community Following Christ for Life,” and made suggestions for revisions. Said farewell and thanks to the departing elders and welcomed several of the incoming elders. Discussed St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church’s request, with endorsement of West Jersey Presbytery, to join them in calling for an end of the violence in Cameroon, and decided to sign the petition, give the congregation the opportunity to sign, and schedule an Adult Ed session about the issues for later in the spring. Learned of the need for care receivers from the Stephen Ministers. Heard of plans for Trinity youth to meet with youth from Temple Beth Sholom to discuss their faith. Learned of plans for worship and pastoral care during Rev. Faulkner’s medical leave. Approved the Spring Prayer Vigil for April 12 – 13, 2019. Heard a positive report about budget outcomes for 2018. Reviewed the building use sheet for the spring and discussed options for volunteer set-up and break down. Approved the February 3, 2019, membership count of 679. Prayed for members and friends. - Margery N. Sly, Clerk of Session

Adult Ministries

The Second Great Awakening Nearly a half century after the First Great Awakening, a religious revival once again reinvigorated faith in the United States. Ministers preached that the Second Coming of Christ was imminent, and church attendance soared dramatically. Women and African-Americans adopted leadership roles in the church like never before. Antebellum Americans also expressed their faith through reform movements that radically altered American society. All are welcome to join Margaret Gammie to discover more about this crucial period in American religious history on March 3 at 11:00 am in the Witherspoon Center.

Lenten Bible Study Series

On March 10th, 17th, and 24th Greg will be presenting his Lenten Series entitled "History of the Bible". These Adult Ed talks will be held in Witherspoon Hall from 11am to noon. Be sure to save the dates and time as you do not want to miss these informative sessions.

Mission and Outreach

Homeless Hospitality Network

Mission: From November to May, 12 homeless men are housed in participating congregations. They are provided with warm meals, a safe place to sleep and caring fellowship and support. The men attend counseling classes on money management, job, interpersonal and basic computer skills as well as drug and alcohol support groups. Date: Sunday, March 31 -- Sunday April 7th Where: We share this mission program with St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Cherry Hill. The men will be housed at St. Andrew's for two weeks. Trinity will supply overnight and social hosts and meals the second week: March 31 to April 7. Who can help? Everyone.

How can you help? There are a variety of ways: Serve as an over-night host--We need two Trinity men on each night. Grab a friend and share the mission! Serve as a social host--watch a game, shoot the breeze, play some cards with the guys. Serve a home cooked meal-we need--2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 7 dinners. Shop or donate food for weekday packed lunches. Drive the men to AA or NA meetings (usually Thursday evenings)--we need 2-3 drivers Organize a Social Event (Movie, Bowling, Shopping, Sport) Laundry Day--Drivers needed

Trinity has a long-standing relationship with IHOC and the Homeless Hospitality Program. For many years, members of Trinity have generously given their time and talents to this program. Your love and support can help rebuild lives. We ask that you prayerfully consider helping this year. A Great Way You Can Help a Hurting Friend Do you have a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative who is going through a difficult time? Here’s a great way you can help them—tell them about our Stephen Ministry! Stephen Ministers are members of Trinity who have received special training to provide high-quality, confidential, one-to-one, Christian care to people who are grieving the loss of a loved one, coping with a cancer diagnosis, going through a divorce or separation, battling a chronic illness (or caring for a spouse or parent who is chronically ill), experiencing a great deal of stress, facing the loss of a job—or encountering any of countless other life challenges.

Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receivers to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support. (Males are matched with males, and females are matched with females.) The caring relationship lasts for as long as the person needs care. It’s free and it’s a powerful way you can help a hurting friend. To learn how to connect someone you know with a Stephen Minister, talk with one of our pastors or Stephen Ministry Leaders: Reverend Craven or George Sanders. Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!

Library Corner This month’s new addition to our library was listed in 2017 as a Best Book of the Year by more than ten newspapers and magazines.

Killers of the Flower Moon The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI By David Grann From the time of the Louisiana Purchase until the early twentieth century, westward expansion meant

that the Osage Indians were continually forced to move from one piece of land to a less desirable one. Finally, in 1906, the Allotment Act mandated that the tribe agree to be confined to a specific area of their choosing. The Osage purposefully picked a hilly, barren tract of land in Oklahoma where they thought they could stay peacefully because no white settlers could possibly want it. Few imagined that the tribe was sitting on a fortune. By the terms of the agreement, each Osage Indian received what was called a headright (a share in the tribe’s underground mineral rights). By the 1920s, after the discovery of oil in their “underground reservation,” members of the Osage Nation had

become, per capita, the richest people in the world. Newspapers reported that they arrived at tribal dances in chauffeured cars, sometimes even by helicopter, and lived in opulent mansions. The events of the story begin in 1921 and center around Mollie Burkhart whose large family possesses numerous headrights. At first she begins to fear that something has happened to one of her sisters who has disappeared. Before long, one by one, many of her relatives were shot or poisoned. Other Osage also died under mysterious circumstances. In these cases, the deceased’s headrights would often be administered by prominent white men in the area. Many of those who investigated the crimes were also murdered. As the death toll rose and was reported in the national papers, the case was handed over to the newly created FBI and its young director, J. Edgar Hoover. A former Texas Ranger was assigned to put together an undercover team which, eventually, was able to unravel and expose “one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.” The author, David Grann, has done an admirable job of researching the history, people and crimes involved. Photographs of people and places are used throughout the book. Fifty pages are required to list the research sources and bibliography. Despite the incredible detail, the book has been described as a page-turner: “Grann tells the story of the Osage investigation with a Dashiell Hammett-like gift for suspense. Killers of the Flower Moon is a marvel of detective-like research and narrative verve.” Celebration of Dr. Suess For children, this month we are displaying our collection of his books. If you would like us to purchase a particular book for the Trinity Library, stop by on Sunday or contact Michele Strobel ([email protected])

The Library Committee Needs Your Help! The Library Committee is looking for someone to read and review books for Tidings every month. The reviews are due the 15th of the month before (Feb 15th for March Tidings). We are in need of someone as soon as possible. Please contact Michele Strobel at [email protected] or 856-649-4087 with interest or questions.

YOUR CHURCH NEEDS YOU!!

Stewardship – it’s not just money. As Greg has often said, quoting first Corinthians, “The body is a unit, though it is made of many parts… So it is with Christ.” We are the body of the church and we are each a part of it. Each of us contributes to the glory of Christ and the church in different ways. Getting involved and taking on responsibilities and tasks within the church, is a great way to deepen your connection with the church and in return get more of a sense of belonging, satisfaction and spiritual enrichment. The Property and Buildings Committee is a ”behind the scenes” support function that maintains the physical church property so it can be used for all the worship and activities. Session’s 2019 budget changes church management to external cleaning services in a goal of financial stewardship. This move concentrates on the major cleaning tasks but leaves some tasks uncovered. We are looking for some people who are willing to assist in table and chair setups and breakdowns for the many events we have throughout the year.

There is a signup sheet at coffee hour where you can sign up to assist. In addition to that, we have a running list of over 30 “to do” items that we try to get completed. If you have skills that we could draw upon from time to time, be it electrical, mechanical, plumbing, woodworking, painting, floor mopping and stripping, changing light bulbs, climbing ladders, computers, landscaping, sound systems, door locks… the list goes on and on… We would love to hear from you. Everything we can do ourselves, saves the church the cost of hiring outside contractors, so your time is money. Please consider offering your talents to help keep the church an inviting place. For more information call or text Walt Steinle @ 609-504-5168 or e-mail to [email protected]

COLLECTION OF MOTHERS MATTER ITEMS TO BEGIN THIS MONTH

It’s that time of year again! Time to collect health and beauty items for the Mother’s Day gift basket project sponsored by the Lauren Rose Albert Foundation (LRAF). Mothers Matter assembles gift packages filled with women’s health and beauty care products and then distributes them to women facing difficult challenges. Packages are delivered to women’s shelters, children’s pediatric hospital wards and centers, day care centers and facilities or agencies such as Ronald McDonald House, Mercy Hospice, My Sister’s Place, Mother - Child, Memorial Veterans Home and other groups. Each gift carries the message that “Mothers Matter” and for many, this is their only Mother’s Day present. LRAF has also added “comfort” gift bags into the program that are distributed to Virtua/Fox Chase Cancer Program and MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. Some of the Trinity PW Circles will be starting to collect for Mothers Matter gift baskets at their March meetings. In addition, there will be a large basket at Church located between the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall (underneath the PW Bulletin Board) for donated items. We appreciate the support of all Church members. The basket will be there during March and until April 14. Here are the items that can be donated: shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body spray, body lotion, hairbrushes, combs, hair accessories, lipstick, nail polish, eye shadow, blush, mascara, mesh sponges/puffs, foot and hand care products. The highlighted items are in demand. The products need to be new and unopened (no sample sizes except Bath & Body Works Products of any size). The “comfort” gift bags also include warm and fuzzy socks and unscented lotions. Thank you in advance for your generosity! Anyone interested in coming with PW members to help assemble the baskets at their headquarters in Sewell is welcome to join us. We will arrange a date in April. It’s a great volunteer activity! Any questions, please contact Jan Caffrey at (856) 667-3687 or [email protected].
