An Open Invitation: Partnering with Men to End Domestic Violence
October 20-22, 2010
Marriott Resort and Spa
Myrtle Beach, SC
1 in every 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Here in
South Carolina, over the past eight years, approximately 38 women were killed annually
by their intimate partner. We believe that it is time for a significant change that can be
collaboratively achieved between both women and men. Now is the time to create
change and build strong communications and quality advocacy programs for victims and
survivors. This is your time to network, share your experiences and use this opportunity
to learn and receive more information to include men in the movement against domestic
violence. South Carolina ranks number 8 in the nation for women who are killed
by men. This is devastating to communities, family members, friends, members of the
clergy and those who work closely with the victims. It is time for us to work together to
make South Carolina a safer place. Teaming up with men can provide a suitable source to
assure advocates and professionals are able to help both men and women who are victims
and survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
The South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (SCCADVASA)
is providing this three day training that will allow advocates to receive a wide range of
continuing education hours; presentations and workshops presented by knowledgeable
advocates, as well as the opportunity to share valuable information with others on how to
alleviate interpersonal violence. This year, SCCADVASA wants to encourage the
involvement and commitment of men who are currently working as advocates, as well as
assuring that we all work for the benefit of victims and survivors. On Wednesday,
October 20, 2010 from 5:00-7:00 pm, the fraternity of Omega Psi Phi, Incorporated will
provide an evening where they will Step Out on Violence. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity
has chosen domestic violence as one issue on their national agenda and has agreed to
provide us with a unique exhibition of their representation and support of ending violence
against women. In addition, we will hear from Jackson Katz, Tony Porter and Judge
Ronald Adrine. Mr. Dale Well, a distinguished survivor of domestic
violence will also share his life experiences.

Dr. Jackson Katz, is an educator, author, filmmaker and social theorist who has
long been recognized as one of America's leading anti-sexist male activists. In 1993
he conceived and co-founded the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program at
Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society. The multi-racial,
mixed gender MVP program was the first large-scale attempt to enlist high school, collegiate, and
professional athletes in the fight against all forms of men's violence against women. Today MVP is the
most widely utilized gender violence prevention program in college and professional athletics. His
influential book, “The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help,” was
published by Sourcebooks in 2006. Jackson is a well-known activist around the world.
