Research Institute for Science & Technology in Medicine (ISTM)
Guy Hilton Research Centre RJ&AH Orthopaedic Hospital
Keele Medical School
University Hospital of North Staffordshire (PFI development)
School of Life Sciences
A multidisciplinary Institute formed in 2006 to underpin the new Medical School established between Keele and Manchester Universities
ISTM brings together dispersed clinical and laboratory-based researchers from different departments and cultures.
Facilitating Biomedical Research
ISTM brings together clinicians and bio-scientists across four hospital sites and the Keele campus:
• University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Hartshill, Stoke-on-Trent
• The Haywood Hospital, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent
• Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry
• Leighton Hospital, Crewe
• School of Medicine• School of Pharmacy• School of Health &
Rehabilitation• School of Life Sciences• School of Computing &
Mathematics • School of Chemistry & Physics

Theme leaders: Prof Alicia El Haj Prof James Richardson
Cellular phenomena and cellulartherapies for clinical applications e.g.
• Autologous treatments, e.g. knee cartilage• Surgical repair, e.g. biomagnetic cell targeting• Magnetism and magnetic materials techniques
for biomedical applications, e.g. in the brain.
ISTM is a European Centre of Excellence in Tissue Engineering.
Clinical & Diagnostic Science
Theme leaders: Prof Gwyn Williams Prof Simon Davies
Interaction between bioscientists, engineers, physicists, chemists and clinicians e.g.• Molecular epidemiology and tumorigenesis• Apoptosis (programmed cell death)• Structural biology of the innate immune response• Rheumatic and inflammatory diseases• Breath analysis – monitoring and diagnosis
ISTM has a dedicated Human Genomics facility
Infection, Inflammation & ImmunityIncorporating the Centre for Applied Entomology and Parasitology (CAEP)
Theme leader: Prof Gordon Hamilton
Molecular approaches to control of insect vector-borne disease
• Malaria, mosquitoes and man• Leishmania, sandflies and man• Chemical ecology of insect communication• Fish parasitology & comparative immunology
CAEP is an internationally recognised centre with links to North and South America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
