An Overview Of Vehicle Suspension System

The suspension system is designed to deliver a smooth ride to the passengers in all road conditions.

There are many developments are being made to optimize the suspension system and make it more efficient and durable for

extensive use.

The system makes sure to keep the wheels remain on ground and properly

function like slowdown, stop or accelerate whenever needed.

What are the main components of suspension system?

:- Tires :- Wheels

:- Shock absorbers :- springs

:- Control arms (upper &lower) :- sway bars

:- Torsion bars :- Axle system :- Driveshaft

:- Wheel alignment etc

What are the different types of suspension system found in vehicle?

The current suspension types are divided into different categories :- :- Dependent

:- Independent :- Semi-dependent.

The independent system allows the vehicle's wheel to move up & down in an uneven road vertically.

Independent Suspension System :-

There is no linkage of 2 hubs in front wheel rather they are free to work independently.

In this system, there is a linkage between the two wheels of same axle and the energy that affects one wheel also affects the

other one.

Dependent system

This system is a combination of both dependent and independent suspension system.

Semi-dependent system

The twist beam is a semi-independent suspension system that is currently used in many vehicles.

How does the suspension system work?

When vehicle starts, the engine power transfers to wheels and from wheel to ground to make the vehicle move.

If it's a bumpy road then, the shocks are get absorbed by the damper or shock

absorber.

The springs help to store the energy and allow the wheels to move up & down.

The arms then help the suspension to move up and down while keeping the wheels perpendicular to the road all the time.

The sway bars of suspension controls the vehicle body while taking turns.

The steel torsion bars act like springs to manage the load on vehicle.

Engine transfers the power to wheels through the drive shaft and

axle system

Finally a right wheel alignment and a proper air pressure gives a comfortable ride to the vehicle.

What are the symptoms of suspension issue?

:- Excess tire wear :- Poor steering control

:- Excess bounce on humps and bumps :- Loss of control on sudden stops

:- Vehicle sagging etc

Make sure to check the vehicle's suspension system before it breaks down to the point where it needs an expensive repair.
