What is a Daybed?

Daybed can be used as a bed and for reclining, lounging and

seating in the common rooms. It is a kind of cross between a chaise

lounge, a sofa and a bed. It has been used as a home décor item for

a long time. It typically features sides and back and comes in twin

size. It often has a trundle for expanding the sleeping capacity.

Materials Used for Making Daybeds

Daybeds are available in metal, wood or a combination of both metal

and wood. You can even find ones made up of wicker and

upholstered in leather. Metal ones are mainly used for sleeping while

the ones that are made up of wood are considered to look more like

sofas and may even be used for lounging and sitting. The metal ones

have a more traditional look than the wood daybeds, which are

basically thought to be more modern. However, traditional looking

wood daybeds and contemporary metal ones are also available.

Choose the material that you think is suitable for your use.

Daybeds Available in Different Styles

Daybeds are in available

in sleigh, Mission and

Victorian styles.

Traditional and

contemporary daybed

styles are also available.

Traditional style

daybeds enclose

mattress on the three sides. The foot-board and headboard act as

arms when the bed is used as a sofa. The back offers the support for

the throw pillows as well as seating. This traditional looking

furniture has a more elaborate, larger and intricate carving.

But the furniture pieces with modern makeover do not have a back

but only arms. This will not work if you do not place your daybed

against the wall because there’ll be no support when used for

seating. Some of the contemporary styles do not even have arms but

only a back like a bench. Those pieces are comfortable for daytime

seating. However, sleeping with the headboard is impractical unless

the bed’s side is against the wall. There are again a few daybed styles,

which mimic the style of chaise lounge with a partial back and just

one arm. The modern daybeds come with sleek, simple lines and low

profile.

The style of the furniture that you choose for your room must

compliment the rest of the décor of your home. If your home is

decorated with modern, sleek and chic furniture and décor items,

buying a traditional looking daybed would be a grave mistake.

Colors that are Most Common

There are plenty of choices when it comes to choosing the color of

the daybeds. Dark, light or painted wood is available. There are color

options in metal as well like silver, brass or chrome. Choose a color

that compliments with the interior décor of your home.

Materials Used for Mattresses in Daybeds

There are different kinds of materials used for mattresses in

daybeds. Choosing the right one is important. Firmer mattresses are

better for daybeds and are primarily used for sleeping purpose

whereas the softer ones are better for sitting.

Memory foam is comfy for sitting and

sleeping but retains heat. Don’t use it if

you live in warmer climate.

Spring mattresses are cheap but are not

quite comfortable. They may collapse

around the edges or wear out after too

much of sitting.

Hypoallergenic latex mattress is a good

choice.

Support Systems for Daybed Mattresses

Basically, there are two

kinds of support systems

for daybed mattresses.

Spring-like support and

the wood slats.

The first one is a wire mesh held by steel frame. The springs help

with the shock absorption. You will feel as if you are sitting on a bed

rather than on a sofa. The wood slats on the other hand go across

the frame for supporting the mattress. It is the same kind of frame

that is found in the bunk beds. The slats are more shock absorbent

than solid platform bed but not like spring-link frame. For getting a

firm support, wood slats will be a superior option.

Indoor and Outdoor Daybeds

Two categories of contemporary daybed are available in the market.

One is for indoor use and the other one is for outdoor purpose.

Outdoor daybeds generally have a roof like structure for protection

against sunlight whereas the indoor daybeds are quite simple.

Consider the kind of daybed that you want and buy accordingly.

A lot of infant beds are converted into daybeds by removing one

side.

Trundles-A Special Feature

There are many daybeds that have trundles. Trundles are basically

pull-out beds on the casters. They are stored underneath the daybed

when not in use in the daytime.

The trundle bed is pulled out when extra sleeping space is needed.

Two beds use the space of a single bed. A trundle may be left low to

the ground or lifted up to the same level as daybed. Buying a daybed

with this feature makes a lot of sense to people who often have

guests coming to their house. However, if you don’t think trundles

to be for you, then use the space underneath the bed at least for

storage.
