An Update Regarding School Leadership We wish to advise our school families that for this term, Gail Pollard has taken leave to care for a member of her family. In Gail’s absence, and until further notice, Mrs Erin Norman will assume the role of Acting Principal.

Erin has the support of Mr Steve Harvey, who has assumed the role of Acting Assistant Principal, as well as all Kalinda staff.

SEVERE ALLERGIES (ANAPHYLAXIS)

A reminder that we have some students at Kalinda who have a SEVERE allergic reaction (Anaphylaxis shock) to the following foods:

Eggs Kiwi Fruit Peanuts Cashews Walnuts Almonds All tree nuts – including hazelnuts and by-products, eg. Nutella. Sesame (including seeds & oil) This is an extremely serious condition and we must treat it with great care and concern.

We do realise that labels on processed products can be very difficult to read and interpret, but we do ask you to be cautious in food preparation as this condition is very serious if children come into contact with these foods in any way.

All children at Kalinda must be safe at school and it is the responsibility of the school and its community to make sure that happens. Even though these children may not be in your child’s grade it is still possible for playground equipment to be contaminated by residue on fingers, etc.

Please communicate this message to the rest of your family if they are making lunches for your children. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK!

During World War 1, the wives, mothers and girlfriends of the Australian soldiers were concerned for the nutritional value of the food being supplied to their men. The problem

was that any food they sent to the fighting men had to be carried in the ships of the Merchant Navy. Most had no refrigerated facilities, so any food sent had to be able to remain edible after periods in excess of two months. A body of women came up with

the answer - a biscuit with all the nutritional value possible.

At first the biscuits were called Soldiers’ Biscuits, but after the landing on Gallipoli, they were renamed ANZAC Biscuits

Makes about 25

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Anzac Biscuits

What you need: 1 cup rolled oats

1 cup plain flour 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed ½ cup coconut 125g butter 2 tablespoons golden syrup 1 tablespoon water ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

Make these biscuits as large or as small as you like. Biscuits will keep in airtight containers for at least a week or you can freeze for 2 months. Combine oats, sifted flour, sugar and coconut in large bowl. Combine butter, golden syrup and water in small saucepan and stir constantly over medium heat until butter is melted, stir in soda. (If you prefer the microwave combine butter, golden syrup and water in microwave-proof jug, cook on HIGH for about 1 minute or until butter is melted. Stir in soda). Stir mixture into dry ingredients. Place rounded teaspoons of mixture 5cm apart onto lightly greased oven trays; bake in moderately slow (160º) oven for about 20 minutes or until biscuits feel slightly firm. Use spatula to loosen biscuits on trays, cool on trays.

Don’t hesitate to move the trays around once in the oven as this will help the biscuits to brown evenly.

Do traffic worries stop you from letting your children

walk to school?

Victoria Walks and government agencies want to know

where people feel safe or unsafe walking in the suburbs.

Parents are encouraged to record their walking issues

and concerns on the interactive WalkSpot map. You

can indicate concerns like a lack of pedestrian crossings,

poor street lighting, high traffic speed, footpath problems

and more.

VicRoads and councils will use the data to help them

prioritise street improvements.

Don't miss this important opportunity to help make your

streets better for walking. Mark your trouble spots by 28

April at:

www.walkspot.crowdspot.com.au
