GREETINGS NOBLES AND LADIES OF ANAH

Well folks, February has come and gone and not a whole lot has been happening during this month, however, I do want to remind everyone about our calendar sales. Please help us make this project a success again this year. March will be different with the 2nd sections potentate party March 8th and the mid-winter Northeast Shrine Association meeting March 13 - 15th in Springfield, MA, followed by our Appreciation Night on March 22nd at the Aroostook Shrine Club in Presque Isle. We hope nobles and ladies throughout our area will come to Aroostook and enjoy a great evening with us. Also, please bring guests who may not be shriners, this might interest them in joining our great organization. In April, we will be havingour 5 o’clock Somewhere party which should be a fun filled evening for all in attendance. Soon to follow will be our circus May 2-3 and 4th in Bangor and May 8-9 and 10th in Presque Isle where we will need all your help. Finally, our motto for this year is HOPE FOR THE CHILDREN IN 2014 in honor of Tom Clukey, so if you know a child who may need our help be sure to tell them to get in contact with our hospital. The telephone number is (413) 735-1234.

We had a nice turnout at the January Ceremonial where we saw Illustrious Richard Hallett elected to the position of IP. Congratulations Dick. Sheldon Ellis, Chet Davis, Merland Clark, Dennid Bryant and myself were there armed and dangerous. ( no sign of former Boss Hogg) Chet and Dennis covered the evening events including shooting the Divan for the office lobby photo which is now hanging there. Sheldon and I covered the morning functions while Dennis shot the ladies luncheon. I heard there was a huge crowd for the evening festivities. Many were down from the County including Lady Gail Clukey. Spring is on it’s way and I saw many Shriners at Harvey’s RV open house. Nothing like a little warm weather to stir up the Anah Kampers.

Well got a little fishing left to do.

Congratulations to our unit. It would appear that we did another very good per-formance of the “A Mason” presentation at the January Ceremonial. Standing up front with a sign I noticed that every one in the audience, especially the candidates,

His phone no. is 207-848-3866. E-mail is [email protected]. Your reply to him would be most helpful. The Anah Shrine Past Masters are avail-able to exemplify the Master Mason De-gree upon your candidate if you so desire. Please contact Ken Swett (address above) if you would like us to do so. There will be NO stated meeting in March. Our next meeting will be the 2nd Sunday in April (April 13) at the Bangor Masonic Center, Seminary Hill, 294 Union Street, Bangor (the old Bangor Theological Sem-inary). We will meet on the 2nd floor in the Board Room at 2:00 p.m. and will dis-cuss our upcoming summer events among other things. Hope to see many members there. Remember, you can belong to the Past Masters Unit and also another unit if you so desire. Contact Ken Swett if you wish to join us.

The Keystone Kops had their first meeting of the New Year with the new leadership in place. Chief Erick Emery called his first meeting to order with Assistant Chief Harold Sherwood and Secretary Steve Jones at his side. Treasurer JR Tozier was in Florida, playing golf. Schedule of events: The Keystone Kops Annual Golf Tournament is scheduled for May 18, 2014, at Hermon Meadow. We have a few parade requests in the works and when they are finalized, the locations and dates will be passed along. Birthday wishes for the month of March 2014, go out to Kop Ted Perkins, Ladies Lynn Stanhope, Patti Reid, Debbie Bruns and celebrating their Wedding Anniversary, Lloyd and Katherine Hopkins. Congratulations to all and may you have many more. Now for the question of the month. Last month’s question was: In 1933, at the end of Prohibition Era, the temperance league found a new target. What was that target and who was one of it’s biggest opponents? Answer: Pinball. New York mayor Fiorello LaGuardia was elected on a anti-gangster platform and he started by cracking down on mafia-run slot machines.

When mobsters replaced slots with pinball machines, he waged a year-long campaign to ban them too. Using Prohibition-style raids, he rounded up 3,000 machines in a little over three weeks. The month’s question is: During an interview, Tom Selleck once said the best actor he has ever worked with is who? Now back to Inspector Mason and his quest to solve his most recent mystery and to find a qualified professional to help him crack the case. Talking with local law enforcement officers, the same name was mentioned several times. So, the Inspector decided to talk with this individual. It seems that he is a retired adjunct professor, with a doctorate in psychology. He is also a noted mentalist. After a few phone calls Inspector finally contacted the professor, who agreed to meet with him. The meeting would take place at little joint on the south side called “Tony’s Pizzeria”. Great pizza and cold beer. Inspector Mason was told that, ever though the professor was French, he loved cold beer and was OK with pizza. The meeting took place at “Tony’s” on a Tuesday evening where they introduced themselves to each other. The professor was not quite what Inspector Mason envisioned. He was slight in stature, donned a cropped salt and pepper beard, wore thick glasses, smoked cigarillos, he had an everyday air about him and had the ability to communicate in a manner that, at times, could rival drunken sailor. It has been said of him, “if you didn’t know he was a doctor, you wouldn’t know he was a doctor”. More to follow. Time has come to close the “Blotter” for this month and to remember, “IT’S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS”.

The next Keystone Kops meeting is March 25, 2014.

Reporter Greetings nobles. Speaking for myself and fellow Unit members, we would prefer to be on two wheels, but for now are patiently waiting for spring. Under the premise of better late than never, our slate of officers for 2014 is as follows:

Captain - Jacques Matthews1st Lieutenant- Chad Barker

2nd Lieutenants - Cory and David Pelletier

Treasurer - James RyanSecretary - Herb Libby

Quartermaster - Michael (Sid) AlleyRecorder - Scott Welch

Unfortunately we were unable to pull off our annual Valentine’s Day Dance, but plans are in the works for a Mother’s Day Dance that should be wicked awesome! Stay tuned for details A tip of the Fez and congratulations to a fellow mini biker, Noble Ed Youngblood for recently receiving the prestigious 2013 Catherine Lebowitz Award for Public Service as awarded by the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce. Well deserved Ed. If any of you nobles reading this have interest in joining our Unit, you can check us out our Facebook page or contact any Mini Bike Unit member. Yours truly can be reached at blueknightsrule.com. We

really need riders and would love to see new faces. There is a mini bike waiting for you! Riders wanted! And for all of us Masonic “organ donors” that ride the big bikes, don’t forget to support your local Widows Sons chapter, that being the Low XII Riders of Central Maine; a wicked good bunch of Masons dedicated to assisting the widows and orphans of our Masonic brothers.

8 The Anahgram

Noble Andrew St. Amant, ReporterNoble Fred Brown, Reporter The Bangor-Brewer Shrine Club held a meeting on January 16th at the Shrine hall. The Directors’ Unit was also on hand for a joint meeting. It was Danny Taylor’s first meeting as Club President. He must have lots of friends, because we had over 40 Nobles on hand, which is more than we’ve seen in January for the past several years. Good things are happening with this group – come out and have fun with some old friends and make a few new ones too! Visiting dignitaries included: Harold “Sonny” Crocker (Past Potentate); Larry Hersom (Recorder and Past Potentate); Al Gibson (Past Potentate); Norris Nickerson (Past Potentate); Don Gordon (Marshall); and Dean Hoke (Chief Director). Duncan Brown and Joe McDonald became the Club’s newest lifetime members. Thanks guys. Denny Smith, George Alley, and Sped Seymour handled the kitchen duties. Denny and George looked the part in their white chef jackets. Hopefully they remember the white hats next month too. Meatloaf, taters, salad, and cake were on the menu. I’d like to thank P.P. Sonny Crocker for helping out at the ticket table again. As you probably know by now, he can sell ice to Eskimos on the coldest day of the year, which it just might have been. Speaking of tickets, our club is now selling “100 Pound Lobster Raffle” tickets. Tickets are $1.00 apiece or six tickets for $5.00. Three lucky tickets will be drawn on June 21st during this year’s Ceremonial. 1st place will win 50 pounds of lobsters, 2nd place will win 30 pounds of lobsters, and 3rd place will win 20 pounds of lobsters. Anah Shrine’s own Joe McDonald is providing the lobsters and will coordinate with the winners to arrange for delivery. Sounds like a summer party to me! A limited number of tickets are available, so please contact a member of the Bangor-Brewer Shrine Club to get yours today. Please mark your calendar for our upcoming meetings to be held at the Shrine hall – March 20th (Pork Loin) and April 17th (Stagecoach Express Buffet – Ladies Welcome). We look forward to seeing you all soon!

From our captain Hello Nobles: We just complete the Jan. Ceremonial and I would like thank the nobles who was there. I would like to give a big thanks to Noble Joe Briggs who spend the day with me helping selling items. We sold 35 hats on Saturday. Noble Mike Connelly took 4 dozen to the coast and the Key stone Kops took 2 dozen so, they are selling very well. Parade request are coming in, we have two confirm and had to turn one down because of another parade on the same day. Could not get both in because of times. Our next meeting will be on Sunday April 13th at 1:00 P.M. in Ellsworth. I will have more information to come. I have took to Noble Gerald Carey in Florida with several other snow birds and they are doing well. Looking forward to see them in the spring. The June ceremonial is not that far off and we do need some

new members so check with any Master Masons you know and get them to the ceremonial and into the flag unit. Take care everyone and be safe for the rest of the winter. Birthday wishes to everyone in March. Wishing everyone Congradulations on their Anniversary, also. We march so others can walk.

Noble Fred Patterson, Reporter Greetings Nobles and Ladies. As I write this article, Punxsutawney Phil has given us some bad news and it looks like we have six more weeks of winter 2014. So I guess all we can do is to stay settled in and ride it out. The Second Section would like to congratulate our new Illustrious Potentate, Richard Hallett as he took the reins of Anah Shrine in honor of Tom Clukey at the January Ceremonial on January 18th. We also would like to congratulate Noble Robert “Boomer” Palmer Jr. who was appointed the Outer Guard by the Potentate. Congratulations to all of the Nobles who took over new duties for 2014. The Second Section will hold the 50th annual Potentates Party on March 8th at the Shrine temple to honor our incoming Potentate, Richard Hallett and our outgoing Potentate Lee Kaufman. This will be a night that you won’t want to miss. After a meal served by the Anah Clowns, enjoy dancing with DJ, JR Mitchell until 11:00 PM. The Second Section would like to send condolences to the Lady Gayle Sprague and the family of 2008 Past Potentate Ed Sprague who passed away on January 23, 2014 after a short illness. I would share something I got from a long time Mason that hit home with me

with regard to our dwindling numbers in Masonry and the Shrine. Keep this in mind when you think about where our members are going. It’s called “The Member Who Never Came Back” It amuses me now to think that your clubs spends so much time looking for new members, when I was there all the time. Do you remember me? I’m the person who came to every meeting but nobody paid any attention to me. I tried several times to be friendly, but everyone seemed to have their own friends to talk to and sit with. I sat down among some unfamiliar faces several times, but they didn’t pay much attention to me. I hoped somebody would ask me to join one of the committees or to somehow participate and contribute, but no one did. Finally, because of illness, I missed a meeting. The next week no one asked me where I had been. I guess it didn’t matter very much whether I was there or not. On the next meeting date I decided to stay home and watch a good TV program. When I attended the next meeting no one asked me where I was the week before. You might say that I’m a good person, a good member, someone who could be a valuable part of your club. You know who else I am? I’m the member who never came back! Are we making our new and old members feel welcome in our Lodge, unit or club? I personally think we all could do better to make them want to participate and keep coming back. Seminary Hill Daylight Lodge has a motto of “conviviality and caring”. Honestly, I had

to look up exactly what they meant as I really thought they misspelled something there. But, if you look it up it means “friendly” and “agreeable”. I think they have it right and from what I’m told, it is working for them and they are a strong lodge with a lot of members in a relative short period of time. We still have a few Nobles who have not contacted me to get their dues up to date. If any Second Section member has either changed their address or phone numbers please contact me at [email protected] with those changes so we can get to you with any information of interest. Also if you don’t see your name in the Anahgram for either a birthday or anniversary, see me to update my list as I don’t have all of the members information on these dates. March birthday wishes go out to Ladies Christina Buteau, Sylvia Currier, Robyn Dulac, Diane Dunn, Leah Rideout and Jessica Snowdeal and Nobles Tom Dunn, Dennis Hill, Joe Kitchen, Dick Leeman, Tom Severence, Linwood Hall and Ladies March anniversary wishes go out to Chris & Amber Robison, Tom & Penny Dunn, Albert & Linda Higgins, Darell & Ellen King and Harvard & Dodi Austin, Linwood & Jane Hall. Our next scheduled meeting will be held Friday, April 4, 2014 at the Shrine temple. Remember, if you can’t make it to the meeting, contact an officer or any member to be excused. Until next time, think membership so we can have fun at the Ceremonial.

Sunshine Club For Children met at the Shrine Center on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. The social committee served many delicious refreshments. Coffee and tea served in vintage cups and saucers. The officers read their reports and they were accepted. Sunshine Club welcomed many donations. Thank you notes were sent out to Anah Shrine Clubs, units and friends to let them know that Sunshine club appreciated their donations. New nobles from the Anah Shrine January 2014 ceremonial will receive information to join Sunshine Club. Janice Young was appointed Transportation Chairperson on November 20, 2013. She reported that a total of 68 patients used Sunshine Club for

transportation in 2013. Sue Black, Holiday Market Chairperson reported that the Holiday Market Place 2013 was successful and fabulous. Chairpersons and workers did a great job for the market place. Sue thanked everyone. Festival of Trees Chairperson Duffy Woods reported that we have our tree for 2014, but no theme yet. Randy Reeder won our SUNSHINE CLUB TREE at the 2013 festival. Two of our members also won a tree. Betty Trimm won the OUR CITY OF BELFAST TREE and Lorraine McGowan won the ACADEMICIANS TREE. Ethel Whitcomb reported that membership addresses are on a spread sheet. There are still some addresses that are not right. If anyone knows of any addresses we do not have or any address changes please email Ethel at [email protected]

Another annual January ceremonial is behind us and now we have 12 brand new created Nobles and a new Potentate for 2014, PP Richard (Dick) Hallett. Dick and his wife Carolyn did a supper job when he had the position before and I know he’ll do ANAH proud this year. Robert Boomer Palmer was appointed to the Outer Guard position. Some call this job the custodian of the umbrellas. I have known Boomer for quite some time and I know he will do a good job. Fred Brown was appointed to the assistant treasurer’s position. He was originally a Washington County boy who married his high school sweetheart Jennifer ( Look ) went to college and then into the banking business. They now live in Prospect with their 2 daughters. Blair Bubar, another friend of mine went on as Chaplin. He and his Wife Judy reside in Blaine. Gerry Harvey retired after 30 years as the editor of the ANAHGRAM. He did a fine job and he will really be missed. Andy Constantine retired as Director of the Temple and was replaced by Fritz Day. I believe that Fritz will do a good job in this position. All of the rest of the appointed Divan moved up one step. Washington County’s own Brad Prout was elected to the Oriental Guide position. Brad chose not to take any jumps when they occurred in the Divan line of progression therefore some of the other elected officials went ahead of him. The Directors staff gained one new member and lost another. Alfred Reynolds became a new Director and my good friend Myron Hersom decided to end his tenure on the Directors staff. Myron and I went on the Aides together and we also came on the Directors staff together. Myron just lost his wife Carolyn and I believe anyone who knew her loved her. I know she helped me out a lot throughout her years as secretary at the Temple. Dean’s wife Kathy passed out pins to all the Directors wives and I thought that was a nice jesture on their part. The aroostook County Shrine Club put on a great Hospital Room Friday evening and the Clowns put on a good feed and hors d’oeuvre spread on Saturday evening. Kora’s Potentate, Dan Gove, brought his whole Divan up to enjoy the festivities I am sorry to have to inform anyone who reads this article that ANAH’s membership has dropped below 3000. It should be everyone’s mission to increase our membership. There were 100 candles on the “ Black Camel “ cart this year that’s why it is so necessary to recruit new members.

I guess that just about covers the Ceremonial. I’m sure the Directors will be having a meeting in the near future so we can find out what’s expected of us for the coming year. Be good to one another, attend Blue Lodge and find a candidate for June.

Tri County Shrine Club held their monthly meeting on the 15th of January at the Newport Masonic Hall. We had 27 Nobles in attendance. After the Libation Hour, the meeting was called to order by new President Dan Costain. Invocation was given by Secretary David Mosley. The Flag Salute was led by President Costain. The Nobles were treated to an excellent Baked Ham supper, served by the Ladies of the Eastern Star. After the meal, President Costain introduced the head table, which consisted of Secretary Mosley, Vice President Arthur Watson, Treasurer Marty Taylor and Potentate Illustrious Sir, F. Lee Kaufman. First time visitor to Tri County was Noble Tim Briggs, who joined Anah at the June Ceremonial. Circus Director Charles Grindle and members of the Circus Committee Steve Mosley and Denny Hill were introduced. Aide Emeritous Ron Green was introduced, Member of the Directors Staff Keith Dewitt was introdued. Heads of Units that were introduced was 4X4’s, Scott Folsom and Flag Unit Captain Arthur Herbest. Representing the Divan was Outer Guard Doug Dulac. Meeting was then turned over to the Circus Committee. Where the Circus is being held at the Cross Center, there was a lot of new info and many questions asked. The Circus Committee did a fine job of explaining the new set

up and the many changes that have to take place in order for the Circus to be a success. NOBLES, PLEASE KEEP THE CIRCUS A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE, SUPPORT IT LIKE YOU ALWAYS HAVE. Circus Awards were passed out to deserving Nobles that were present, others will receive theirs in the future. Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were given and accepted. Tri County’s donations at the January Ceremonial were presented and approved by the Nobles present. Winner of the 50/50 was Potentate Lee Kaufman who donated his share back to the club. What a way to go out, thanks Lee. After the January Ceremonial, I will have a new boss for the Anahgram Editor. Many thanks to Noble Gerald Harvey for the help and encouragement he has given to this reporter. Illustrious Sir, Potentate F. Lee Kaufman, was then given the floor for the remainder of the evening. Potentate Kaufman expressed thanks to Tri County for all the help they have given over the years while he climbed the Divan Ladder. Potentate said it’s hard to believe that his tenor as Potentate is almost over. He wouldn’t trade it for anything, except a little free time that is coming up. No further business, meeting was close by President Costain. JANUARY CEREMONIAL IS NOW PAST, BUT THE JUNE CEREMONIAL IN THE COUNTY IS FAST APPROACHING. GET YOUR CANDIDATES. A GOOD SOURCE IS YOUR LOCAL BLUE LODGE. ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR BLUE LODGE, IT’S WHERE FUTURE SHRINERS START

Things are getting busy for the New Year at Anah. Many of the temple officers will be traveling to Springfield, MA March 13-16 for the Mid-winter NSA planning seminar. During these meetings, plans will be finalized for housing, travel arrangements, competitions and business operational issues for fifteen Northeast Shrine temples. The NSA field days will be held August 21, 22 and 23. Many units, nobles and their ladies will be attending this exciting weekend in Springfield. Information will be published in the upcoming Anahgrams, so all can make their plans for this event. You will be noticing a few changes in our monthly publication during the next few months. Of course, the biggest change is the appointment of our new Editor, Ed Armstrong. He will be taking over from our faithful and longtime Editor Jerry Harvey. After 30 ½ years of dedication to the Anahgram, Jerry was made Editor Emeritus at the January Ceremonial. Putting out a publication such as our monthly Anahgram is a tremendous task compiling unit and shrine club articles, soliciting the advertisements which help fund the Anahgram, and seeing that everything is submitted and delivered to the printers in a timely fashion. Many thanks for Jerry’s years of dedication, and also much recognition to his lady Lorraine, who worked by his side for all of those years enabling the Anahgram to win the Dromedary Award more than once. Editor Ed Armstrong will now have an office here at the temple, so please all continue to submit unit and shrine club articles by the deadline, and make Ed’s job run smoothly. Over the next few months and coming years, we foresee some expensive repairs and maintenance issues that will need to be addressed. We are hoping units and shrine clubs will keep this in mind when planning their budgets and end-of-year donations to Anah’s Building Fund. Such issues as air-conditioning, electrical work, a new roof, insulated doorways, security and etc. A facility such as ours requires constant attention and updates, so we thank and appreciate those units, shrine clubs, and individuals who have so generously donated to this cause, and hope you all will consider giving to these projects in the future. We welcome Robert “Boomer” Palmer to the Divan as Outer Guard, our new Director, E. Fritz Day, and also our Assistant Treasurer, Fred Brown. These

are all dedicated Shriners and make a great addition to our temple’s team.

Hello Fellow Academicians, We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ray Naugler who recently passed away, and belated condolences to the family and friends of Galen Swan who passed away last summer. Donations in their memories have been made to the Springfield Shriners Hospital. Best wishes to Paul Connelly who underwent some surgery in Boston right about the time of the January Ceremonial. We all hope you are recovering well Paul. The next meeting will be Wed. March 26th at 6:30 at Kosta’s Restaurant on Wilson St. in Brewer. Come one come all. Ladies, guests, kids, prospective members, etc. are always invited. There are some people who still owe 2014 dues. All bills have gone out. Please send a check for $10 made payable to Anah Academicians to Ron Bilancia 59 Allison Park Brewer, ME 04412. Much appreciated. The January Ceremonial went very well. We had a lot of fun. Our new Director, Jon Swallow, cut his teeth on this one, is learning fast, and did a good job. Thanks very much to everyone who participated. We received many positive reviews from Divan members and others. Yours truly and family had a trip to Sunday River and New Hampshire in late February. It was great skiing and then spending time with my sister and her family over in NH. We hope others have enjoyed winter fun such as skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. And to those in the Sunny South having fun in the sun, we hope you’re having a great time and look forward to seeing you again when things get a little warmer here in the good ole State O’Maine. Have a great March everyone, and remember, never hesitate to contact me at 989-2617 or at [email protected] with any questions, concerns, news, jokes, gossip, nonsense, or just plain old outright lies that you would like to generously share with our Nobles, Ladies, and Anah Shrinedom in general. The January 7th meeting was held at Pat’s Pizza with 25 members present. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 by President Jason Snowdeal. Old and new business was discussed. The lobster feed at Alvin Heath’s will be June 11th. Nobles please put this on your calendars. Will try to keep everyone informed as the date approaches. There was discussion about a Ladies Night to be held in April. The meeting adjourned at 7:00. A nice meal was had by all. Sam Carr won the evening raffle. I hope he went right home and told

There was a discussion about repairing picnic tables, and a committee will be set up to inspect the tables to determine what needs to be done. More to come next month. Vice President Roger Grindle took the time to introduce Yours Truly as Reporter. I didn’t think you cared Roger. The evening raffle was won by Glen Sprague. Well, here we go. This is my first article and like anything else it is late. We are having a dance on March 8th from 9-1 at the Harrington VFW. It is going to be great with the band live wire playing. We are currently having a lot of discussion about if we should get new cars or con-tinue the repair as you push parades that we have grown seasoned with. As many know the units first parade was in the late 70’s with these same cars and they did not all cross the finish line then. The other big debate is if the cars are replaced what do we do with the old cars. I think maybe the cole museum. And finally the trailers, should we get another small one so they are easier to tow or keep the big one. A lot to think about. As I said this is my first article so I don’t know if it is anyone’s birthday or anniversary. If it is congratula-tions, we would like to celebrate with you. If it is not, we still would like to celebrate with you! Thanks for reading, god bless

Well, that darn skunk saw his shadow, so I guess we still have two more weeks of winter. Our annual meeting was held Saturday, March 1st, at the Happy China restaurant. Will report more about this next month. Also next month we will be doing the Shrine Circus. At this time all I know for sure is the price of tickets has gone up. tickets that were $4 for children, twelve and under, and $8 for adults, will now be $10 for everyone in advance and $12 at the door. That is for Bangor only. Birthday wish’s this month go to Don Emmons and my lovely Lady, Donna. I have a 29 after her name, I don’t know if that is her age or the date of her

hour at 5:30. More information to come next month. Thirteen new members were inducted into the Shrine at January Ceremonial. Congratulations to outgoing Potentate Lee Kaufman and incoming Potentate Richard Hallett. Our sympathy to the family of Past Potentate Ed Sprague on his recent death. Now for the local news. Noble Dave Weaver fell on the ice at the January Ceremonial, but is doing well. Noble Bruce Walls had a small problem carving a squash on his wife’s favorite table. Next time he should use a cutting board. Noble Cecil had a close encounter with a tree which required him to have nine stitches. Next time he should move a bit faster and wear a hard hat. Past Potentate Geddes Simpson has been using Carole’s car for the last couple of weeks, because he had a problem with the garage door opener and couldn’t get his car out. Noble Howard Heath is back from his trip to Alaska. Noble Tom Frost is busy at his new job. We wish Noble Nelson Grindle a speedy recovery from a recent operation. Noble Forrest DeMeyer is doing well after a recent hospitalization. His daughter, Lady Nancy Madore, flew up from Florida to check on him and to make sure he was doing what he was supposed to do. Of course, her husband, Noble Mike Madore stayed where it was warm. Heard that Tommy Fernald is trying out his new Dr. DR bushwhacking machine in his back yard. We extend our sympathy to the family of Carol Hersom, who was Anah Temple secretary. The next meeting will be March 4th at Pat’s Pizza. Let’s get out, bring a fellow shriner, have a good time, and support our club President Jason Snowdeal. P.S. I did find out where Blue Hill is. An early reminder everyone should know..April 3rd will be the annual divan visitation at Addison Town Hall. Let’s all get out, bring a fellow Shriner and support the Washington County Shrine Club. Birthday wishes go to Faye Geel, Brad Prout, Frances Lowell, Brenda Thomas, Regina McHenan, Dick Leeman, Betty Fernald, Lucy Sprague, Bud Prouty Jr., Lois Clark, Steve Trimm, Dennis Malloy, Aaron Grindal, Jessicca Bickford, and Donald Bowden. Honeymooners are Edwin and Faith Colburn. As of this writing, you may already be a winner in the annual gun raffle. Haven’t heard anything from snow bunnies Noble Wayne and Lady Phyllis Butler, but their chalet on the pond is still there. Oops! The phone is ringing. Noble Wayne has been laid up but is recovering.

Hope all you Nobles had a happy Valentine’s Day and treated your ladies with a box of candy, bouquet of flowers, or a gun raffle ticket. Oops! Time to go. Cookie and I have to buy a gift for my lady’s birthday. But maybe I should wait-she could be a lucky winner on March 1st.

Continued from page 13 birthday! Also this month there were no anniversary’s. Starting next month we begin having our monthly meetings the first Monday of the month, at the shrine center at 7:00 p.m. We have a lot to do as the trucks need to be ready for our first parade, which will be Special Olympics, at U.M.O. Anyone interested in becoming a member, please contact myself at 794-6675! Some Blue Lodges go dark January and February. Attend their March meeting and help bring them back to light.

January 23rd was a sad day for Anah Shrine and Washington County Shrine Club when Past Potentate Ed Sprague passed away. Ed was a very dedicated member and we will all miss him at our club meetings and Shrine events. The turnout of Shriners, Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile members, and friends sure was a tribute to Ed and how well people liked him. Condolences go out to Gayle and the family. On January 10th, Claire and Walter Kennedy also lost a loved one, their daughter Sue Willey, at the young age of 52. Sue was a teacher at Machias High School for many years and surely will b e missed. Condolences to the Kennedy and Willey families. The January Ceremonial is now in the past and congratulations go to Robert Q. (Boomer) Palmer Jr. who was appointed to Outer Guard at the Ceremonial. We also wish 2014 Potentate Richard Hallett and Lady Carolyn a successful and fulfilling year. One quarter of 2014 will be gone at the end of this month and the weather will soon be turning warmer. The bitter cold and icy conditions have been daunting at times and I hope that no one has taken a bad fall on the ice. Hopefully the groundhog will not see his shadow and we will have an early spring. Or at least one can only wish this to be the case. It’s time to see green grass and get into the garden again, not to mention going to the lake and doing other types of outside enjoyment. Our February meeting was held on the 6th at Helen’s Restaurant in Machias and was our annual Valentines Day Ladies Night. Since the deadline for the March and April issues was the day prior to our meetings I cannot report on them until following issues. I can report that the ladies were presented a rose at our February meeting, which also allowed them to have a kiss from Mike Bailey, who greets each lady with a big grin on his face. The ladies love it Mike! It is always more enjoyable to have our sweethearts attend with us, especially in February. The fuel raffle winner will be drawn at the February meeting and the winner reported in the next Anahgram. Get your new candidates lined up for the June Ceremonial, to be held in Presque Isle from June 19-22nd. It will be here before we know it.

Greetings Nobles and Ladies!!! We are half way through winter and your highlanders have lined up several events for this summer. I’m not sure what the Potentate has scheduled for this year, but I’ll be requesting a detailed list tomorrow. No need to cause scheduling conflicts. We want to make sure to put on an extra good show this year, in remembrance of brother Tom Clukey. Tom once told a group of us that what we do as Shriners is “All About the Kids.” I

couldn’t agree more. As Masons and as Shriners, we often get bogged down in the bureaucracy of running the building and making everything about the building or whether a word is - the or that. God bless the people that do look after the buildings, as that is important, but for most of us our goal should be: how can we help the kids. If we help the kids, we look good in the eyes of the community and that is our path to new members. Our future success depends upon actions today. I’m writing this in February; I figured that I would give a little history on Valentine’s Day for all the love birds. I found several versions of the origins of Valentine’s Day. One was that a Roman Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers, ordered them not to marry. One priest refused to stop and the Emperor ordered him killed. Another talks about a priest that helped Christians escape harsh Roman jails. Still another states that the February holiday has its origins in the early Christian church trying to “Christianize” the pagan Roman festival of Lupercalia (fertility festival), which was dedicated to Faunus (the god of agriculture). Not to rain on greeting card industry, but one has to ask, “Should we be spending all this money

on a holiday with such a violent past?” While Valentine’s Day is a bit of a sham, St. Patrick’s Day on the other hand warrants strict celebration. It is one of the Highlanders favorite holidays! We well be playing St. Patrick’s Day evening at Geghan’s Pub near the Shrine. It is a great way for us to raise awareness and money for Shriners’ Children’s hospitals. We have an awesome time, and the crowd loves us. We are practicing every week and look forward to having you join us!!For those who may not know, St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He lived in the 5th century. Born in Roman Britton and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland and explaining the Holy Trinity by using 3 leaves of native Irish clover. His death, which is believed to be March 17, 461, has been celebrated in Ireland for over a thousand years. The first St. Patrick’s day is believed to have occurred in America on March 17, 1762, by Irish soldiers serving in the British army. They were reported to have marched to their music through New York City. On a more personal note, I will soon have a final copy of my book. When the editor compiles the manuscript into an official draft, I’ll finish the Table of Contents and Index. I’m hoping to have it in print by June. In parting, I’d encourage everyone to take a page from our first President. George Washington didn’t believe in shaking hands, he bowed. During the flu season, we should too. Bowing is far more sanitary and it still conveys respect to another person, just not the germs. If anyone would like piping or drumming instruction, please contact me at [email protected]. Until next time be safe and be blessed.

Noble Frank Wilson, ReporterGreetings nobles and ladies! It’s March and by golly I have something to report! At our January meeting we voted to pay Dean Jordan’s lifetime membership. He has certainly earned it with the dedication and gallons of sweat he has given the Funster unit. Congratulations Dean! We discussed at tendency at parades and other functions also. If you cannot attend, Todd will be happy to excuse you if get ahold of him ahead of time and let him know. Otherwise you will be marked absent. Also, in an effort to boost parade and circus attendance, we have dropped the credit given for meetings from 1 to 1/2. Parades as of January are Carmel Days and the Rockland Lobster Festival August 2nd, the Hermon Summer Sizzler/ Bicentennial August 9th with a 9:00 am lineup 10:00 step off, Winter Harbor Parade also August 9th with a 4:00 lineup and 5:00 step off. Add them to your calendar! Those of us that are another year older are, Don Cammack, Marjorie Smith, Brenda Thomas, John Driscoll, Brayden Dewitt, and Noah Frost. As for anniversaries, Mike and Mary Clark are celebrating the only March Funster anniversary. In closing, remember our March monthly meeting will be Monday, March 10th at the Shrine Center in Bangor with a 6:00 social and 7:00 meeting.

From the EditorBrothers!`To bring you up to date on the Anahgram: Gerry Harvey, our Editor for many, many years has decided to retire. He is in his 80’s. I have been asked by the Potentate to take over Gerry’s editing responsibilities temporarily till a replacement is found. How could I resist! He had a “45” on his hip! Gerry has done a wonderful job thru the years but he deserves this break from the grind of editing. There’s a lot to it!So!...you are stuck with me for a little while! The editors job here at the Shrine is just not editing; the position also requires the editor to sell the advertising in the Anahgram to support it. Lots of fun! Right! But, having been a Mason since 1967 and a Shriner since 1971…it is “payback time!” Forty three years a Shriner and now the Temple needs a hand. OK, so lets get to it Eddie boy!! We are all Brothers and our efforts to support our hospitals and provide the needed help for the kids is our primary job. All of our units are in existence for one purpose: to raise money for the hospitals. Having seen with my own eyes what your hard work and efforts have brought forth over the years for the kids is exemplary!! I respect you all! Thank you for your hard work. My background puts me in the printing and publishing business since I was 14 years old starting with the Boston Herald in 1950. I have owned and published and started several weekly and monthly publications thru the years and have done it all: ad sales, editing, interviewing, design and paste-up, circulation, production, floor sweeping, rate-structure, you name it. I have done it. What I need from all of you is a little patience. Gerry was a hard-working guy for many years and has left big shoes to fill. If you want to send him a warm farewell to the Shrine Office I know it would be appreciated. If any of you have a business and are not advertising in this publication then I ask respectfully if you could help to support it with some of your ad dollars. I receive no commissions on advertising. This is our publication. I respectfully ask you to support it with your ad dollars. Thanks for reading. See you at a function!Respectfully,

Ed ArmstrongEditor

SCHOODICSHRINE CLUB

Noble David G. Beckett, Reporter

Greetings from Schoodic Shrine Club: Sorry the January column was not in the Anahgram. It must have been lost in space. We did hold a meeting in January. Twelve Nobles and Ladies met at the Nook and Cranny Restaurant on Route 9 in Woodland (Baileyville) on January 15th. We ordered from the menu. It was delicious. Following dinner, our new Noble President, Ike Winchester, conducted a short meeting. Noble Vice President, Jamey Gower, and Noble Treasurer, Norm Howe, were also in attendance. We set the meeting dates for 2014. The March meeting will be held at the New Friendly Restaurant in Perry on Wednesday, March 19th, with a social hour at 5:30 pm and meeting at 6:30 pm. Ladies and guests are invited. We hope to see a good showing at the meeting. There will not be a meeting in April, but the May meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 21st, at the Congregational Church Parish Hall in Dennysville. The times are the same as the March meeting (5:30 & 6:30). Please plan to join us at our club meetings this year. Bring a friend. ‘Til next time!

Martin “Fou” Perfit Reporter

January started with our usual First Saturday gig at Home Depot’s Children’s Workshop. Fou (Martin Perfit), Papi (Stan Baker), and Pop Fizz (Troy Devoe) amusing the kids almost as much as they amused themselves. The Northeast Clown Institute twenty-fifth anniversary weekend, held in Plymouth Massachusetts from January 17 to January 19 was well attended by Anah Clowns. Iggy (Drew Matlins), Patches (Shawn Mott), Fuzz (Dennis Dyer), Pooch (Pat Kelley), Sweet P (Kevin Kirkbride), Dim Wit (Scott Kennard), Petals (Steve Watson) and Pop-Fizz (Troy Devoe) were there to take home an inordinate amount of awards. Sweet P received the first place, single balloon plaque he earned last year while Diggah (Scott Knight) was awarded Craftsman Clown plaque albeit in absentia. Sweet P continued his winning way in balloon twisting by taking second place in single balloon. Anah had two winners in multiple balloon competition with Patches scoring first place and Pop Fizz placing second. Third place in multiple clown skit went to the team of Pooch, Sweet P, Patches, and Fuzz in his new guise as Dumpster. Number five in character clown went to Crush who is sometimes known as Sweet P. Patches took second place in tramp/hobo competition followed by Fou in third place. Second place in first year Auguste went to Dim Wit with

fourth place going to Pop Fizz. Patches was awarded his well deserved Craftsman Clown plaque. Judging by the number of awards he earned this year, he is well on his way toward Master Clown. I would be remiss in not giving a nod of thanks to Iggy (Drew Matlins), the dean of Northeast Clown Institute. He played a major role in planning and executing the weekend. One of the innovations that Iggy helped initiate was competitions for first year participants. This allowed both Dim Wit and Pop Fizz their chance to take home awards and add to the reputation of the Anah Shrine Clowns. Congratulations to Sweet P on his installation as Worshipful of Master of Mystic Lodge #65. The cohesiveness of our unit was demonstrated by the large number of clowns who attended the installation and the very enjoyable lunch which followed. We must close on a sad note. Our condolences to Patty Gilbert and her husband Ken (Baby Cakes) on the passing of Patty’s mother.

Never read the fine print. There’s no way you’re going to like it.

Above is a picture of Larry Hersom Recorder and PP, Bob Turner Assistant Rabban, Roger Grindle 1st Ceremonial Master and Students at Helen Dunn School in Greenbush Me. The students presented to these Shiners more then 43000 can tabs that had been collected in the last 2 months. These can tabs will be combined with others at the Shrine and the money received for these will be sent to one of our Hospitals. A BIG THANK YOU GOES TO THE STUDENTS OF THE HELEN DUNN SCHOOL

It was a pleasure to sit with my fellow Wheelers at the January Ceremonial and see so many new Shiners’ be initiated by an outstanding cast of Academicians’. It was also pleasing to see past Capt. Ricky Robshaw pass so many checks over to the Potentate. We Wheelers are very proud to have contributed $1,000.00 to the Springfield Hospital, $500. 00 to the Burn Ctr. in Boston, and $500.00 for the sign to be erected outside the Anah Shrine Center. We Wheelers also congratulated all the newly elected and appointed Anah officers for the ensuing year. As you sit in the water closet reading the Anahgram, the Annual Anah Wheeler Cabin Fever Super Supper will be but a pleasant memory and your Lady will, most likely, already have spent the winnings. It is a pleasure to report the Lady Cindy Pinkham is finally pain free after having back surgery. Now she and Delbert can recuperate together, and will be well healed in time to enjoy their March anniversary. Lady Sandi and Noble Kevin Megno will also enjoy a March anniversary. Noble Walter Kennedy is the sole birthday boy this month and we hope its a corker! As always, your are encourage to support all the Masonic Bodies. There is much Light and Beauty still to discover. When Allah calls, then our friends obey and fold thier tents and steal away.To the land where the crystal waters flow, where the Beautiful Palms of Allah grow.
