What I´d like to learn in CALL II?Graphical Results

The top graph shows the results of the statements made by the students of the fifth semester of the Degree in English Language Teaching, belonging to the School of Languages, whom after reading the contents of Assisted Computer course Language Learning 2 (CALL 2), were given the task of responding to the question what I'd like to learn in CALL II?, as you can see from the chart most of the students were interested in the topic Human Language Technology, since according ls most responses is one of the issues that were not during the previous course of CALL II, in the second place we have the Electronic Language Service, because for those who chose this topic is interesting to know how to keep a portfolio and third instead we have students who feel that the entire class will be interesting. To conclude the analysis of the graph most students concluded that it is important to learn to manage technology in an educational way for us to cover our weaknesses and improve our skills.

How I´d like to learn in CALL II?Graphical Results

In the graphic above we can interpret the answers that the fifth semester students gave to the question: How I'd like to learn in Call II?; we see reflected in these responses that students are conscious and know that the best way to acquire knowledge is through practice, because practicing what we learned find a better way to gain knowledge and improve our skills, due to it is important to adapting to the new ways of teaching, always with the goal of being the best in our work.

Communicative abilities in L2 mediated by technology in the context of task based teaching and cooperative learning

“INTRODUCTIONThe study proposed here is framed in the field of applied linguistics, specifically in the teaching of second languages, from the creation of a linguistic intervention module that uses a methodology "mixed" based on task-based approach and the cooperative approach, in addition to incorporating the CALL application through the use of E-mail, and Internet Weblogs as learning tools. This arises from the need to introduce the teaching-learning methodologies efficient learning environments mediated by technology. The objective is to develop and implement a methodology to increase communicative ability in English as a foreign language through the use of CALL, the tasks and cooperative approach and obtain empirical evidence of the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Learning Computer Assisted Language (English, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)) in turn responds to the need to incorporate technology into the classroom, because students are embedded in a technological society where cell mp3, mp4, I-pod and internet are used in order to communicate, obtain and / or store information. In this context, CALL is dedicated to exploring the role of these technologies in the teaching and learning of languages. It aims to improve learning in those learning a language through computational means, allowing the learner to develop, expand and refine their communication skills in a new language.

One of the fundamental aspects of CALL methodology is to determine the teaching approach that guides the design and development of a computer application for language teaching. In this context, the tasks and cooperative approaches have

Page 7: Analizing the forum discussion[1]

proved effective (Morales and Ferreira, 2008). The task-based approach aims to involve students in solving meaningful tasks with real and useful communication objectives, these promote student leadership and give you the opportunity to use the knowledge they have to solve the challenges imposed solving the task of centering the same in meaning than in the form (Willis, 1996; Skehan, 1996, Richards and Rodgers, 2001). The cooperative approach (Johnson and Johnson, 1987; Slavin, 1990; Sharan and Sharan, 1992, Walters, 2000) in the search for greater and richer classroom interaction techniques emphasized cooperative work in which students must work together interdependently and coordinated with other group members, developing the students language skills, social and cognitive skills through interaction and teamwork. It also promotes a positive atmosphere, which is necessary for successful interaction in the classroom. In this context, incorporating the information and communication technologies through the use of websites, email and weblog, supported CALL methodology, specifically CMC, which states that the use of computer mediated communication can foster development of communication skills.”

NOTE: This article helps us find ways or methodologies for students to be participative and dynamic in the classroom. Since the technology right now is the most used tools by students. And according to the study shown in the graphs, students want to learn in a dynamic way. Sometimes CALL can be very theoretical but students should learn as otherwise lesllame attention to them and they can be active

CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning)

“An ideal CALL course are remains not an alternative but a complementary tool in reinforcing classroom activities.  Apart from relying on the ability of educators to create suitable CALL course ware, the effectiveness of CALL depends on the teacher’s readiness to adopt new attitudes and approaches toward language teaching.  The teacher should avoid being skeptical about the use of computer in language teaching and begin to re-evaluate his methods in the light of computer’s tremendous teaching potential and boldly address to the challenges offered.  The computer can best assist teachers if it is seen not as a replacement for their work but as a supplement to it.  By the way, the computer, will not replace the language teachers, but, used creatively, it will relieve them of tedious tasks and will enable students to receive individualized attention from both teachers and machines to a degree that has so far been impossible.

 Analysis

This is the examples of the pictures that I took from Euro Talk Interactive

(Learn English). There are essential words and phrases for absolute

beginners. It helps for the students so they can learn how to speak English

well.

Positive : It’s fun for all ages.

Negative : Some words can’t be use for kids and Junior High school because there are words or conversation that

purposed for tourism.

Page 9: Analizing the forum discussion[1]

Strength : It’s good

Weakness : Some CD’s cant used for some reasons, like can’t be opened in a few typical of PC.

Advantages : Another advantage of CALL is that it gives a new role to teaching materials. Out of the context of CALL,

teaching materials are passive.

The advantages mentioned up to the present moment make us aware of an important fact in relation to CALL- we have to

be constantly analyzing whether the uses to which CALL is put are just reinforcing current practices or if, in contrast, they

are promoting curriculum renewal. In order to fully benefit from the potential of the computer for language learning,

language teaching specialists have to promote a complementary relationship with computers. With the practice of this kind

of activities, curriculum renewal is guaranteed, so that there is no doubt that a real and evident progress in teaching

methodologies is taking place.”

NOTE: This article shows how to create software for use in CALL. One of the interests is different software used in the course. This paper shows a software interaction to practice the language.

Human Language Technologies and CALL

Human Language Technologies (HLT) is a relatively new term that embraces a wide range of areas of research and development in the sphere of what used to be called Language Technologies or Language Engineering. The aim of this module is to familiarise the student with key areas of HLT, including a range of Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications. NLP is a general term used to describe the use of computers to process information expressed in natural (i.e. human) languages. The term NLP is used in a number of different contexts in this document and is one of the most important branches of HLT. There is a Special Interest Group in Language Processing, NLP SIG, within the EUROCALL professional association, and a Special Interest Group in Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Instruction (ICALL) within the CALICO professional association. Both have similar aims, namely to further research in a number of areas that are mentioned in this module, such as:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Computational Linguistics Corpus-Driven and Corpus Linguistics Formal Linguistics Machine Aided Translation (MAT) Machine Translation (MT) Natural Language Interfaces Natural Language Processing (NLP) Theoretical Linguistics

Page 11: Analizing the forum discussion[1]

All of the above are areas of research that have produced results which have proven, are proving and will prove very useful in the field of Computer Assisted Language Learning.

Of course, this module cannot teach you everything there is to know about HLT. This is neither necessary nor possible. The two main authors of this module are living proof of that; they both started off as language teachers and then got interested in HLT.

NOTE: This article is important because most of the students were interested in this topic. Apparently is software where you have to apply different materials that we have carried over the race. Maybe that's the interest of all to learn more about Human Language Technologies and CALL.
