Analysis of Article pages

Page 2: Analysing articles

Mise en scene – graffiti all over the wall in the background shows that the rules are broken in this article. It is meant to represent what Dizzee was like before he became famous.

The main image is of Dizzee tagging on a wall. It takes up a whole page, half of the double page article, so it is very important. He is looking over his shoulder, checking that he isnt being watched. This shows that he was rebellious, but also shows that he has always been an artist. Now, instead of tagging, he creates music. The coat he is wearing is bright red, which matches the colour scheme of NME’s magazines.

The page number is shown in the bottom corner. The NME logo is right nest to, as is the date of the issue. The are all in a line, around the same size.

The by-line is written next to the main heading, but in much smaller text. This simply tells us who wrote the article and who took the pictures so that they get some credit.

There is a sub heading underneath the main heading. This tells the reader a bit about what the article is about but doesn’t go into much detail. It is used to get the reader interested in the article and make them start reading it.

The main heading is written in very large capitals. Each word is a different size which makes it stand out more. It is written in plain black so it stands out against the white background. It is written at a slant as well, which matches the NME contents and cover I had analysed.

The article is written in four columns. This makes it look neat and ordered. The text wraps around the image at the bottom of the page which makes the image stand out more.

There is a caption saying Dizzee in the top corner, so that we know this page is about Dizzee.

The second image is used as part of the background of the article page. The actual background is still graffiti, but not as much because there is copy over it. The actual image is of a stereo next to some beer bottles and plastic cups. These items all represent the partying, out of control lifestyle Dizzee and fellow ‘hip-hoppers’ live.

The copy begins with drops cap on the Y. This makes the start of the copy more noticeable and also it makes it more attractive to the reader.

NME - Dizzee Rascal Article

The main image of Dizzee is a medium close-up, allowing us to see the majority of Dizzee’s body. We can see what he is wearing and how he is acting, and we can also see his facial expression clearly.

Kerrang! - MCR article

The main image is of the singer of My Chemical Romance performing. In the background we can see other things but we are meant to focus on the singer because he is in focus and the background is not. The singer is looking down at the ground which implies that he is singing a sad song or is feeling sad emotions. This reflects the emo look MCR go for.

The colour scheme is black and white, with some red text. All the images are in black and white which gives the reader the impression that the band themselves are quite monotone and depressive, which in a way they are.

The red and white text stand out very well against the black and white background, so we can see all the text easily.

There are a few secondary images on the double page as well as the main image. These consist of the bass player performing, the singer performing and the editors discussing. These pictures show us what is going on at the recording studio and what kind of things the band are getting up to. This relates to the article because that is what it is about.

The page number is in the bottom left corner of the page. It is very small to show its insignificance, but it is still there because it is important.

The heading is large and bold, with two colours in it to make it stand out even more. It is also on a slant to add the sense of breaking the rules and not following any order. The heading is actually a quote from MCR talking about how they are doing. This interacts with the reader because the magazine is talking to them.

The sub heading tells the reader more about what the main heading means and what the following article is about to, but it doesn’t go into detail so that the reader will have to read the article to find out the full story.

The article is written in white which makes it stand out against the background. It is written in two columns in a neat box shape. This makes it easier to read and easier to recognise as the article. The article is about the new album that MCR are working on.

The article begins with an M which is in drops cap to make it stand out more. It makes the article more attractive as well. The M is also red which makes it stand out even more.

There is a small banner about how to get more news about this kind of thing in the top corner. This is for the reader if they want to know more so it is a kind of advertising.

There is a list of MCR tracks that will be on the new album going down the side of the page. These are shown on a white background which makes them stand out more. The colour scheme is still the same but the text is now black and red. This is interesting to the MCR fans who will be reading this page, and is also advertising the new album.

Mise en scene – there is the drummer in the background who looks like he is performing. We can also see things lie amps and amp cases to the left of the main singer.

Metal Hammer - Baptized in Blood article

The article is quite large. It is written in white, which stands out against the background fairly well. It covers both pages, with half on each page.

Mise en scene is used to create an image to go with the band. They are placed in what looks like an alley behind some apartments, most likely in a city. This gives the image that this band are related to hanging in alleys and relatively dark corners. They are shown as if they are making there way out of the alley as one side of the page is black and one is lighter. This could represent the band making there way up in the world of rock.

Drops cap is used at the start of the text to make it more attractive to the reader and to catch their eye better.

The main heading goes across both pages of the article. This emphasises how ‘big’ the band is. It is in capitals and a bold font, and is also white to stand out against the rest of the page. The main picture covers the whole of

the double page, apart from the white border. The main focus of the image is the band themselves who are placed in the centre of the image. Everything else is placed around them, which makes them appear more important and dominant. The band are dressed like rockers and are acting in a fun, rocker-ish way.

Quotations are used in the article and above the text to attract people to read the article. It means that the reader can hear what the band themselves have to say. The one quotation is put over a red background that looks like paint smears, matching the border and front cover. The text is bold and larger than the rest of the text which makes it stand out even more.

The colour scheme is the same as the front cover I analysed by Metal Hammer. It is mainly red, white and black with a few other colours appearing around the pages.

Most of the text is white to stand out against the background. The background is fairly dark. The extras bits like the columns and text background is red to make them stand out really well against everything else.

There is a white border going around the whole of the page. It looks like paint, as if someone has quickly brushed around the article to make it look nicer. It adds a sense of messiness and no control.

The article text is split into four columns, all of equal size. This could represent each of the band members or just be that way because it is neat and attractive.

The sub heading is placed above the heading, in smaller text. It is still white but not as big or bold, showing that it is related to the heading but not as important. It tells us about the band a bit more that the heading, which just tells us the name.

The page number is put in the corner of the page. It is very small but helps the reader note what page things are on.

Two extra columns are added in, each with a different colour to make them stand out. The one is advertising the band’s new album and the other is advertising songs similar to those by this band.

A flasher is used to attract us even more to this article. The flasher tells us about new music, which I assume is from the band. The red and yellow make it stand out a lot and the shape of fire makes it stand out more to. It also makes it more attractive and it relates to the colours and the word ‘HOT’ which is used.

There is a banner in the top corner so that when people are flicking through the magazine they notice that this page has something special on it. It is black to stand out against the white border.

The by lines tell us about the main image. It tells us the names of the band members from left to right.
